OBJECTIVES: To assess the efficacy, reliability, and performance of the LapraTy clip (LTc) as a substitute for knot tying during reconstructive surgery in a porcine model.
METHODS: Twenty-four farm pigs were divided in two groups, each undergoing two surgical procedures: group A, transperitoneal laparoscopic cavotomy and small-bowel enterotomy with repair, and group B, laparoscopic partial nephrectomy and cystotomy with repair. In all animals LTc were used to replace knot tying. Tissue specimens were harvested and examined at 2, 4, and 8 weeks postoperatively to assess success of reconstructi

We report 2 patients who were operated on for hypospadias in whom severe dysuria developed several weeks after the removal of a Foley catheter, which had been in place for two and eight days, respectively. Distal urethral narrowing was diagnosed by endoscopy and by micturating cystourethrography. Since we believe the urethral stricture was caused by the indwelling catheter, we now use cystotomy for urinary diversion in all patients operated on for hypospadias.

PURPOSE: To present our recent surgical experience in treating patients with intrathoracic hydatidosis.
METHODS: This study reviewed the files of patients with pulmonary/intrathoracic extrapulmonary hydatid cysts treated surgically between 2003 and 2009. Demographic, laboratory and radiological data, clinical manifestations, site of the cyst, surgical approaches, and final outcome were noted and analyzed.
RESULTS: Forty patients underwent 42 operations (21 females, 19 males, mean age 36 years). Thirty-six patients (90%) had pulmonary (56.7% were intact/uncomplicated), three (7.5%) had intrat

Controversy still remains concerning the timing of repair, the type of approach, and the technical guidelines most likely to prevent recurrence of both radiated and nonradiated vesicovaginal fistulae. The authors advocate the transvaginal approach because it avoids a cystotomy and involves minimal blood loss and consequently is followed by less postoperative discomfort and a shorter hospital stay. Included in this discussion are the techniques and results of the transvaginal approach for simple vesicovaginal fistulae as well as for complex cases and radiation fistulae.

We report a case of hydatidosis of the bilateral lung and of the left lobe of the liver which we treated by cystotomy and capitonnage via right video-assisted thoracoscopy, left posterolateral thoracotomy, and diaphragm incision in a single-stage operation. The patient developed a right pleural infection in the ninth postoperative month and underwent exploratory thoracotomy and recapitonnage. Thoracoscopic cyst extirpation can be safely performed alone or in combination with thoracotomy to reduce the operative inconvenience for patients.

A male aged 73 years in poor cardio-pulmonary condition and with urinary retention due to prostatic infravesical obstruction was treated with implantation of a new type of plastic urethral catheter. Prostatectomy was planned after improvement in the cardio-pulmonary condition. This period was prolonged and, five months after implantation of the urethral catheter, massive incrustation in the proximal intravesical part had formed. The catheter was found to be firmly embedded in the prostatic part of the urethra and cystotomy proved necessary to remove it.

Percutaneous cystolithotomy (PCCL) is a minimally-invasive technique for removal of cystoliths. There is currently no information regarding optimum patient positioning during PCCL. The objective of this study was to assess whether patient positioning affected ease of cystolith retrieval via PCCL. PCCL was performed to retrieve artificial "cystoliths" in three canine cadavers weighing between 15 and 35 kg, using a threaded cannula and a rigid 30° 2.7 mm cystoscope. "Cystolith" retrieval was performed by retrograde flushing and use of a flexible stone basket, with the dog in 10° Trendelenburg, 1

Urethral calculi are rare forms of urolithiasis. Majority of the calculi are migratory from urinary bladder or upper urinary tract. Primary urethral calculi usually occur in presence of urethral stricture or diverticulum. In this article we report a case of a giant posterior urethral calculus measuring 7x3x2 cm in a 47 years old male. Patient presented with acute retention of urine which was preceded by burning micturition and dribbling of urine for one week. The calculus was pushed in to the bladder through the cystoscope and was removed by suprapubic cystolithotomy.

Foreign bodies in the bladder can occur by self-insertion, and patients often hide the symptoms owing to embarrassment. The foreign bodies act as a nidus for calculus formation when not detected for a long time. Foreign bodies can declare symptoms such as frequency, dysuria, nocturia, hematuria, urethrorrhagia, obstruction, or retention. This case spotlights self-inserted intravesical neodymium magnetic spheres clumped and calcified due to delayed presentation which were removed by open cystotomy after a cystoscopic failure.

A 10-year-old male castrated Maltese was referred with clinical signs of hematuria, stranguria, and pollakiuria. The dog was diagnosed with sterile hemorrhagic cystitis with urethroliths and cystoliths. To remove the uroliths, the dog underwent retrograde urohydropropulsion followed by a cystotomy. The following day, persistent bleeding in the urinary bladder was identified with large hematoma, hematuria and anemia. In order to reduce bleeding, the dog received 10 mg/kg of tranexamic acid (TXA) intravenously. Immediately after TXA administration, the dog developed anaphylactic shock manifested

A series of 460 surgically treated cases of hydatid cyst of the lung is presented. Radiologic preoperative diagnosis was made in 90% of the patients. Cystotomy with subsequent capitonnage was performed in 395 cases, wedge resection in 27, lobectomy in 15 and segmental resection in 23 cases. After careful hemostasis, two drains were placed in the thorax and the thoracic cavity was closed. There were three postoperative deaths (0.6%) and two recurrences of cyst (0.4%) during follow-up investigation for periods up to 10 years.

Secondary amyloidosis of the bladder is a rare cause of hematuria, with only 10 previous reports. Findings and treatment in 5 patients with histologically verified bladder amyloidosis secondary to long-standing rheumatoid arthritis are presented. All patients were hospitalized for massive hematuria. One patient died before cystoscopy. Clot evacuation and fulguration through a cystoscope stopped the bleeding in 1 patient. In the other 3 patients hemostasis was achieved by cystotomy, bilateral percutaneous nephrostomy and continuous alum irrigation of the bladder, respectively.

A single-incision transvesical approach to open distal ureterectomy is described herein. The surgical technique has been applied successfully to 6 consecutive patients undergoing laparoscopic nephrectomy with open distal ureterectomy for upper tract transitional cell carcinoma. The technique presented allows easy and effective excision of the ipsilateral distal ureter, ureteral orifice, and bladder cuff as well as closure of the single cystotomy. Further studies with long-term follow-up data are necessary to confirm the satisfactory preliminary clinical experience presented in this report.

A 56-year-old man was admitted to hospital with shortness of breath and subsequently sustained a cardiac arrest. In the recovery period, he developed acute urinary retention and haematuria. Imaging suggested an enlarged prostate and he was started on clean intermittent catheterisation. Following further imaging and a transurethral biopsy, he was found to have a bladder leiomyoma. This was treated with laparotomy, cystotomy and enucleation of the tumour. At his 6-week follow-up appointment, he had a satisfactory cystogram and a successful void without catheter.

Bladder leiomyoma is a rare benign tumor and it could be easily misdiagnosed with many other pelvic diseases, especially obstetrical and gynecological diseases; abdominal, laparoscopic, and transurethral resection of bladder leiomyoma have been reported. Herein, we present a case of bladder leiomyoma misdiagnosed with a vaginal mass preoperatively; the mass was isolated, enucleated from the bladder neck, and removed transvaginally; to the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of intramural leiomyoma of bladder neck that has been enucleated transvaginally only without cystotomy.
