Non-targeted analysis and suspect screening of organic contaminants in temperate snowfall using liquid chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry.

Contaminants released into the atmosphere that undergo regional and long-range transport can deposit back to Earth through snowfall. When snow melts, these contaminants re-enter the environment, sometimes far from their original emission sources. Here we present the first comprehensive characterization of organic contaminants in snow from North America. Fresh snowfall samples were collected in the central United States over a three-year period and measured by liquid chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry for suspect screening and non-targeted analysis. The resulting data set was scre

Preventing tick attachment to dogs using essential oils.

Preventing tick bites using repellents could make a valuable contribution to an integrated tick management programme for dogs. Here, the ability of a range of essential oils or active ingredients of commercially available repellents, to abolish the orientation and taxis of the tick Ixodes ricinus towards sebum extracted from dog hair was examined in laboratory bioassays. Substantial differences between oils were observed, but turmeric oil was both able to prevent a climbing response by ticks and had a longer residual activity than other oils. A blanket-drag field assay was then used to compare

Repellent effects on Anopheles arabiensis biting humans in Kruger Park, South Africa.

Distribution of biting sites on the human body by the malaria vector Anopheles arabiensis Patton (Diptera: Culicidae) was investigated near a source of mosquitoes in the Kruger National Park, South Africa. Eight adult male volunteers (2 teams x 2 pairs of subjects) conducted human bait collections while seated on camp chairs in the open-air, wearing only short trousers (no shirt, socks or shoes). Mosquito collections during 18.30-22.30 hours on five consecutive nights in April 1998 yielded a total of 679 An. arabiensis females biting subjects with or without their ankles and feet treated with

Repellent, Lethal Activity, and Synergism of Cannabis sativa Extracts with Terpenes Against a Laboratory Colony of Triatoma infestans.

Triatoma infestans is one of the primary vectors of Chagas disease. This vector has developed increasing resistance to pyrethroids, the main insecticides used for its control. Recent studies have highlighted the repellent and lethal effects of Cannabis sativa on insects, suggesting its potential use in pest management. Based on this, we hypothesize that C. sativa could be a viable bioactive for controlling T. infestans. To test this hypothesis, acetone and ethanol extracts were obtained from the inflorescences of C. sativa L. (Deep Mandarine variety) using sonication. These extracts were analy

Severe acute illness in a toddler exposed to multiple agricultural pesticides and an insect repellent.

Acute severe pesticide-related illness among farm worker children is rarely reported. The authors report a toddler with acute onset of apnea, cyanosis, somnolence, hypotonia, tachycardia, and miosis who required hospitalization. Health care providers suspected pesticide poisoning, but were unable to determine the causal agent. Investigation by a public health program documented four pesticide exposures that occurred within one-half hour of acute illness. This case illustrates the importance of a thorough environmental/occupational exposure history and obtaining biological samples. It also docu

Percutaneous absorption and disposition studies of methotrexate in rabbits and rats.

The absorption and disposition of methotrexate (MTX) in the plasma, synovial fluid (SF), skin, and muscle tissue were studied following administration of a topical MTX gel in rabbits and rats. In rabbits, MTX concentrations in the plasma increased steadily toward the peak (5.9 +/- 2.8 ng mL-1) which appeared at approximately 2 h postdose and declined with the elimination half-life of 4.48 +/- 1.74 h. At 1 h after the topical dose, the MTX concentrations in the skin (49.0 +/- 19.8 micrograms g-1), muscle (12.7 +/- 3.3 ng g-1), and SF (19.2 +/- 10.1 ng g-1) underneath the dosed stifle joint were

Occurrence and suitability of sucralose as an indicator compound of wastewater loading to surface waters in urbanized regions.

Urban watersheds are susceptible to numerous pollutant sources and the identification of source-specific indicators can provide a beneficial tool in the identification and control of input loads, often times needed for a water body to achieve designated beneficial uses. Differentiation of wastewater flows from other urban wet weather flows is needed in order to more adequately address such environmental concerns as water body nutrient impairment and potable source water contamination. Anthropogenic compounds previously suggested as potential wastewater indicators include caffeine, carbamazepin

What's eating you? chiggers.

Belonging to the Trombiculidae family of mites, chigger specifically refers to the larval stage of the mite's life cycle when it is able to bite its host. Although humans act as an accidental host, chiggers will latch on to the skin and their feeding process leads to localized inflammation and irritation. In most cases, these pruritic erythematous papules and papulovesicles are self-healing within a couple weeks, so only symptomatic relief is required as necessary by means of topical antipruritics, oral antihistamines, topical corticosteroids, or an intralesional triamcinolone acetonide inject

Immobilized horseradish peroxidase hybrid biocatalysts for degradation of pharmaceuticals and other emerging micropollutants.

With the increasing detection of emerging pollutants (EPs), such as pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and pesticides, in water bodies, there is a growing research priority to develop efficient methods for their degradation. In the present study, the degradation of 21 EPs from different classes was investigated using horseradish peroxidase (HRP) covalently immobilized onto two photocatalytic supports, TiO2 and ZnO. The hybrid biocatalysts (TiO2-HRP and ZnO-HRP) were used to degrade EPs with and without the presence of a redox mediator, 1-hydroxybenzotriazole (HOBT). The results revealed

Mite infestations.

Mite infestations are important in dermatology because these may cause dermatologic diseases that range from papulosquamous eruptions to urticarial lesions to bullous eruptions and may spread infectious diseases. These clinical manifestations are important to recognize because mite-associated diseases may have systemic complications and may be confused with other dermatologic conditions. In treating mite infestations, oral antibiotics may be necessary. Prevention of infestation may be accomplished by pre-treating clothing with permethrin, using insect repellent N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide on cl

What's Eating You? Rhipicephalus Ticks Revisited.

Rhipicephalus ticks are vectors of disease in humans and animals. Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (the brown dog tick) is one of the most geographically widespread tick species worldwide, likely due to its ability to colonize human and canine dwellings over a range of habitats. They transmit a variety of diseases to dogs and humans, including canine babesiosis, canine monocytic ehrlichiosis, hepatozoonosis, Mediterranean spotted fever, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Tick bites manifest as intensely pruritic, erythematous papules at the site of tick attachment; symptomatic relief usually

[Protection against tick bites].

There are numerous tick-borne infections, which include viral (TBE), parasitic (babesiosis) and bacterial diseases. Lyme disease (Lyme borreliosis) is the most common tick-borne disease in France. In temperate climates such as in France, ticks bite humans between March and October. Prevention relies on adequate clothing and on repellents. The latter are reviewed in this work. Repellents may be natural, made from eucalyptus, tomato and coconut, or synthetic, among which the most widely used is DEET (N,N,-Diethyl-m-toluamide). Newer, synthetic repellents exist such as IR3535 which, as well as be

West Nile virus infection among turkey breeder farm workers--Wisconsin, 2002.

In 2002, Wisconsin public health officials were notified of two cases of febrile illness in workers at a commercial turkey breeder farm (farm A) in county A. The Wisconsin Division of Public Health (WDPH) initiated an investigation that found a high prevalence of West Nile virus (WNV) antibody among farm A workers and turkeys. An associated high incidence of febrile illness among farm A workers also was observed. This report summarizes the results of this investigation, which indicate possible nonmosquito transmission among birds and subsequent infection of humans at farm A. Because the mode o

Personal protection measures against fire ant attacks.

BACKGROUND: Fire ant stings lead to significant morbidity and mortality each year. Virtually no information exists in the scientific literature about the effectiveness of personal protection measures against these ants. OBJECTIVES: To quantify the level of protection from ant stings by socks and cotton tights and to evaluate the efficacy of repellents and other chemicals in preventing stings. METHODS: Commercially obtained infant socks were fitted on a plastic doll's foot, which was touched to fire ant mounds in a series of controlled experiments. Socks and cotton tights were stretched over

Identification of an arthropod molecular target for plant-derived natural repellents.

Arthropods maintain ecosystem balance while also contributing to the spread of disease. Plant-derived natural repellents represent an ecological method of pest control, but their direct molecular targets in arthropods remain to be further elucidated. Occupying a critical phylogenetic niche in arthropod evolution, scorpions retain an ancestral genetic profile. Here, using a behavior-guided screening of the Mesobuthus martensii genome, we identified a scorpion transient receptor potential (sTRP1) channel that senses Cymbopogon-derived natural repellents, while remaining insensitive to the synthe
