Epstein-Barr Virus-Associated Acute Dacryocystic Retention.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) associated dacryocystic retention presents with an acute swelling in the lacrimal sac area with epiphora and lymphadenopathy. The patient would usually have a preceding history of infectious mononucleosis with clinical features of fever, pharyngitis, preauricular and cervical lymphadenopathy, hepatosplenomegaly, subclinical hepatitis, nausea, and palatine petechiae. The present case is of a 3-year-old child who presented with a sudden painless swelling in the lacrimal sac region with epiphora. Investigations and a biopsy helped in establishing the diagnosis of EBV-asso

Outcome of Transcanalicular Endolaser and External Dacryocystorhinostomy in Chronic Dacryocystitis.

Nasolacrimal duct obstruction due to chronic dacryocystitis is the most common cause of epiphora. Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) is the treatment of choice for chronic dacryocystitis. This can be carried out by external, endoscopic and endolaser surgical approach. Though external DCR is still a gold standard and most popular method, the latest procedure of less traumatic DCR is transcanalicular approach. The study was done to evaluate the outcome of Transcanalicular Endolaser DCR regarding epiphora and surgery related complications by measuring anatomical success rate (patency assessed by irrigat

External and endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy in chronic dacryocystitis: comparison of results.

To compare external and endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy outcomes in patients with chronic dacryocystitis, a total of 103 patients with the complaint of epiphora and diagnosed as chronic dacryocystitis were included in the study. We performed external dacryocystorhinostomy on 55 patients under local anesthesia and endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy on 48 patients under general anesthesia by means of drill and placed silicon stents to all the patients. The patients were examined endoscopically, at postoperative intervals of 1 week, first month, third month, sixth month and the first year. The pat

Endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy in cases of dacryocystitis due to atrophic rhinitis.

Atrophic rhinitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the nose, which is more common in India. Chronic dacryocystitis is its rare complication. The authors found four cases of chronic dacryocystitis from March 2002 to October 2003 due to atrophic rhinitis. It was diagnosed clinically by the regurgitation test and lacrimal syringing. These cases were treated conservatively for a period of six weeks to make the nasal mucosa healthier and were then subjected to endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (end-DCR) under local anaesthesia. The procedure was found to be more difficult due to bleeding and the

[Sarcoidosis of the paranasal sinuses as the etiology of therapy refractory dacryocystitis].

BACKGROUND: Sarcoidosis is a chronic systemic disease of unknown etiology characterized by non-caseating granulomatous inflammation of various organs. The clinical findings when nasal mucosa is involved include nasal crusting, epistaxis, pain and/or anosmia, nasal polyps, or submucosal nodularity. CASE REPORT: We describe a case of sarcoidosis of the paranasal sinuses. In a 33-year-old man, the first symptom was therapy resistant putrid dacryocystitis. Further there had been symptoms of chronic sinusitis. A CT scan revealed swelling of the mucosa in the anterior ethmoid, frontal recess, and m

Atypical presentation of fungal dacryocystitis. A report of two cases.

BACKGROUND: Candida albicans has only rarely been implicated in nasolacrimal duct obstruction. Its association with dacryoliths is well known, but it is unclear whether it is an etiologic factor or is present as a result of the obstruction. FINDINGS: The authors report 2 cases of fungal dacryocystitis that were not associated with dacryolith formation and where Candida species appear to be the primary etiologic agent. CONCLUSION: The possibility of a fungal infection should be considered in the evaluation of "routine" chronic dacryocystitis, particularly in the presence of corneal ulceration

Coexistence of nasal dermoid cyst and encephalocele misdiagnosed as dacryocystitis.

Nasal dermoid cysts (NDs) are common congenital midline nasal masses that may result in complications such as infection and obstruction. This report presents a rare case of a nasal dermoid cyst associated with a sincipital encephalocele (EPHC) in a pediatric patient, presenting clinically as acute dacryocystitis. Histopathological examination revealed a meningocele alongside dermoid cysts. This case underscores the importance of distinguishing between dacryocystitis (or dacryocystocele) and EPHCs, which can present with similar clinical features but require distinct management strategies. The

Superior Nasal Septal Deviation as a Contributing Factor for Dacryocystitis.

Background Dacryocystitis (DC) is a disease most often caused by an obstruction of the nasolacrimal duct, leading to over-accumulation of tears in the lacrimal sac, epiphora, and aseptic inflammation. External and endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) aims to restore the tear pathway by creating a bypass from the lacrimal sac to the nose. The aim of this study is to investigate superior nasal septal deviation as a possible contributing factor in the incidence and treatment of dacryocystitis. Methods This retrospective study included 36 patients surgically treated for chronic dacryocystitis fr

A case report of chronic dacryocystitis caused by nasal stones.

BACKGROUND: This paper reports a case of chronic dacryocystitis due to nasal stones. CASE PRESENTATION: An 84-year-old male patient was admitted to the hospital with chronic dacryocystitis of the right eye due to tearing and purulent discharge from the right eye for more than 1 month. Antibiotic treatments such as gatifloxacin eye drops were given at other hospitals but did not relieve the symptoms. A computed tomography(CT) scan of the lacrimal duct in our department showed a high-density shadow in the right lacrimal sac area, hypertrophy of the right inferior turbinate, and many nasal calcu

Chronic, recurrent dacryocystitis from a BB in the lacrimal sac.

Metallic foreign bodies in the lacrimal outflow tract are a rarely reported cause of nasolacrimal duct obstruction. Among the few cases in the literature, 1 consisted of a BB in the nasolacrimal duct. This case report presents a second case of chronic, recurrent dacryocystitis in a child, which occurred secondary to a BB that had become lodged in the lacrimal sac. The metallic foreign body was identified on CT and successfully removed surgically. Exogenous sources of lacrimal sac foreign bodies should be considered in patients with a history of periorbital trauma and signs of chronic nasolacri

Dacryocystitis secondary to an iatrogenic foreign body in the lacrimal apparatus.

Dacryocystitis is an infection of the lacrimal sac that is usually caused by obstruction of the nasolacrimal duct. We describe a case of iatrogenic dacryocystitis that occurred secondary to the presence of an impacted piece of a metallic dilator in the lacrimal apparatus. The foreign body was detected on dacryocystography and removed during dacryocystorhinostomy. The patient recovered uneventfully.

Early and late assessment of internal drainage of chronic dacryocystitis.

To evaluate the efficacy of internal drainage of a lacrimal abscess, we treated 10 patients with pyocele of the lacrimal sac, who did not want to undergo operative intervention. A temporary nasolacrimal stent was placed in the nasolacrimal duct, and the pussy material was collected for microbiological examination to adjust the preliminary antibiotic treatment which was given systemically and locally. The stents were removed after the infection had subsided clinically. Three years later, there was a recurrence of the infection in only 1 patient. This internal drainage of the lacrimal sac, combi

Acute dacryocystic retention cured by inferior turbinate infracturing.

A 30-year-old man with recurrent acute dacryocystic retention had successful infracturing of the inferior turbinate bone in association with probing of the lacrimal outflow system. Enlargement of the inferior nasal meatus by fracturing the turbinate is easy to do and would be indicated before recommending a dacryocystorhinostomy in cases of acute dacryocystic retention in which the causative cast is difficult to eliminate even by large probes that can be passed down the nasolacrimal duct.

Study of tear film flow and stability in chronic dacryocystitis.

Tear film flow and stability studies were carried out in patients suffering from chronic dacryocystitis by performing Schirmer test-I and tear film break-up-time (BUT) measurements. The results of Schirmer's test corroborated the theory that a reduced out flow of tears causes a compensatory reduced tear secretion. The results of break-up-time confirm the fact that BUT is independent of outflow of tears in patients with epiphora.

Dacryocystitis Secondary to Orbital Mesh Implant Impingement: A Rare Etiology.

A 22-year-old male patient reported swelling in relation to the right eye and developed recurrent purulent discharge and epiphora following a reconstructive traumatic orbital floor fracture repair two years ago. Radiographic investigation and surgical exploration reveal obstruction of the lacrimal apparatus at the lacrimal sac level due to over-extension/migration of the orbital floor mesh. The migration of the mesh was probably due to the extension of the mesh medially into the paranasal region.

Retrospective study identifying risk factors for dacryocystitis in pet rabbits.

BACKGROUND: Dacryocystitis has been suggested to be a relatively common condition in pet rabbits and is often associated with concurrent disease. The aim of this study was to investigate potential risk factors associated with dacryocystitis in a pet rabbit population. METHODS: A retrospective review of medical records from all rabbit cases evaluated at a single first opinion/referral UK exotics clinic between 2015 and 2018 was performed. RESULTS: Dacryocystitis was identified in 55 of 821 rabbits (6.70%) examined over the study period. Of those rabbits with dacryocystitis, dental disease was
