Analogy between training for dancers and problems of adjustment to microgravity: an evaluation of the subjective vertical in dancers.

"Moderne dance" (as opposed to a more academic or classical dance form) uses techniques from kinesiology, anatomy and improvization which are adapted to a cultural, technological and political environment. The function of a choreographic system is to take and give a measure of the world. This includes, with the present tendency of the evolution of culture, a new "naturalism" which seeks the secrets of the body. Dance movements express in terms of space the dimension fo the infinite. It gives somehow the measure of a world within which everything is relative. Except for the speed of light, time

Common adolescent dance injuries.

Dancers are an interesting and exciting group of patients. An understanding of the pathomechanics of their injuries coupled with their genuine interest in a prompt recovery teaches much about the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of similar lower extremity disorders occurring in the population at large. The majority of dance injuries occur in the lower extremity, commonly in the foot and ankle. Conservative therapy is usually successful; surgical intervention is only rarely indicated. Rehabilitation following all injuries is important as well as attention to proper alignment and technique.

A small-scale study on dancing for people living with Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: People with Parkinson's disease (PD) need life-long rehabilitative interventions to slow disease progression and reduce impact of the disease on daily life activities. To be sustainable for the individual, activities should have a positive impact on physical, cognitive and mental health, and should be appealing and meaningful. AIM: To quantitatively evaluate the health-related effects of a 10-week dance program for patients with PD. METHODS: A cross-over design with two groups. Group 1 undertook 10 weeks of dance classes; after that, group 2 began their 10 weeks of dance classes.

Spontaneous pneumomediastinum and epidural pneumatosis after oral ecstasy consumption.

A 19-year-old man was admitted with acute dyspnoea. Physical examination revealed subcutaneous emphysema in the cervical and thoracic area. This was further confirmed by the total body computed tomography that also demonstrated mediastinal emphysema. Epidural pneumatosis of the thoracis spine was also evident. There was no history of trauma, but well of a recent oral ecstasy consumption during a techno rave party, associated with intense dancing and jumping. Clinical course was favourable with conservative therapy.

The effects of a salsa dance intervention in young people with mild to moderately severe depressive symptoms.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence and burden of depression are increasing among young people. Despite this, relatively few treatments specifically target this critical developmental period, and under-addressed mental health difficulties in youth often have lifelong consequences. Social isolation is commonly reported by young adults and is both a risk and maintenance factor for depression. There is a need for accessible, engaging interventions that can reduce depressive symptoms and improve social connectedness. METHODS: Building on evidence of the therapeutic potential of social dance-based activiti

Learning ballet technique modulates the stretch reflex in students with cerebral palsy: case series.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral palsy (CP) is considered the most prevalent developmental motor disorder in children. There is a need for training programs that enhance motor abilities and normalize function from an early age. Previous studies report improved motor outcomes in dance interventions for CP. Investigating the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying such improvements is necessary for efficient and safe intervention design. This study reports changes in stretch reflex responses as the primary neurophysiological motor outcome of a targeted ballet class intervention. RESULTS: A case series of

The dancer's hip.

Conditions that occur in the dancer's hip fall into the following categories: poor training; conditions that occur as the result of normal use; overuse syndromes, including tendinitis and myositis; and conditions referring pain to the hip. Dancers are highly motivated and goal oriented and often suppress symptoms for long periods, making diagnosis and treatment difficult. Observing the dancer at work and understanding his art are emphasized, and a practical guide to therapy is presented. Development of proper dance technique and a proper flexibility program can decrease the incidence of injuri

Iliopsoas Syndrome in Dancers.

BACKGROUND: Coxa saltans refers to a constellation of diagnoses that cause snapping of the hip and is a major cause of anterior hip pain in dancers. When the internal type is accompanied by weakness or pain, it is referred to as iliopsoas syndrome. Iliopsoas syndrome is the result of repetitive active hip flexion in abduction and can be confused with other hip pathology, most commonly of labral etiology. PURPOSE: To report the incidence, clinical findings, treatment protocol, and results of treatment for iliopsoas syndrome in a population of dancers. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series;

Complementary therapies intervention in Parkinson's disease: systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by both motor and non-motor impairments, leading to significant declines in quality of life (QoL). While physiotherapy remains a mainstay of non-pharmacological management, interest in complementary therapies-such as music therapy, dance, and art therapy-has grown due to their potential to address motor, cognitive, emotional, and social aspects of PD within a holistic framework. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of complementary therapies compared to usual care (e.g., physiotherapy) in improv

Nonpharmacological treatments for patients with Parkinson's disease.

Since 2013, a number of studies have enhanced the literature and have guided clinicians on viable treatment interventions outside of pharmacotherapy and surgery. Thirty-three randomized controlled trials and one large observational study on exercise and physiotherapy were published in this period. Four randomized controlled trials focused on dance interventions, eight on treatment of cognition and behavior, two on occupational therapy, and two on speech and language therapy (the latter two specifically addressed dysphagia). Three randomized controlled trials focused on multidisciplinary care m

Patellar Dislocations and Reduction Procedure.

Acute patellar dislocations are a common injury occurring in adolescents involved in sports and dancing activities. This injury usually occurs when the knee is in full extension and sustains a valgus stress on the knee. The medial patellofemoral ligament is the medial restraint that assists in stabilizing the patella from lateral dislocations. The patella usually dislocates laterally and is usually not difficult to reduce after patient evaluation and prereduction radiographs. After postreduction radiographs confirm proper position of the patella postreduction and the absence of fractures, the

Therapeutic arts in Alzheimer disease: a brief review of evidence and mechanisms.

As pharmacological treatments for Alzheimer disease (AD) offer only modest symptomatic improvement, non-pharmacological interventions - including therapeutic arts - are increasingly being explored for their potential to enhance cognitive, emotional, and psychosocial well-being in individuals with AD. This mini-narrative review aimed to summarize the various neurobiological mechanisms through which therapeutic arts impact progression of AD. It also compares the findings, clinical benefits, and changing attitudes of patients and caregivers toward therapeutic arts, such as music therapy, visual a

Spontaneous Intracranial Hypotension in Professional Dancers: A Case Report and Rehabilitation Strategy.

Introduction: Spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH) is a condition caused by a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak, leading to a drop in intracranial pressure. SIH typically results from a spontaneous dural tear, often linked to connective tissue disorders, minor trauma, or repetitive spinal stress. Among dancers, especially in professional ballet, the risk of SIH may be increased by repetitive spinal hyperextension and strenuous movements. Ballet movements, such as the cambré, place significant stress on the spine, potentially leading to CSF leaks. Recognizing the signs of SIH, which often pr
