Curiosity as a clinical entity has been a neglected subject in the psychoanalytic literature. Freud never addressed the issue of curiosity systematically. To study asthenopia, we compared the dark focus of accommodation of 54 symptomatic and 56 asymptomatic control subjects. The two groups were matched for age and cycloplegic refractive error. The pupil dark response and maintenance of pupil area in darkness were compared in seven narcoleptic patients and 14 age-matched normal volunteers. Onset and degree of miosis after maximal pupil dilation in darkness were similar in the two groups, although three narcoleptic patients and no normal volunteers fell asleep during the experiment. The results of this study contradict earlier suggestions that pupillography can be used to distinguish normal individuals in family studies of narcoleptic patients.

Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is a neurologic disorder that causes acute or subacute cerebral edema, brain capillary leakage, and a hyperperfusion encephalopathy that results in presenting symptoms of headache, vision changes, seizure activity, altered mentation, nausea or vomiting, or focal neurologic deficits. We describe a case of PRES in the setting of severe hypertension presenting with total blindness and seizure activity in a patient with multiple risk factors. The patient had previous episodes of PRES in the past that led to the development of a seizure disorder.

Extended periods of darkness have long been used to study how the mammalian visual system develops in the absence of any instruction from vision. Because of the relative ease of implementation of darkness as a means to eliminate visually driven neural activity, it has usually been imposed earlier in life and for much longer periods than was the case for other manipulations of the early visual input used for study of their influences on visual system development. Recently, it was shown that following a very brief (10 days) period of darkness imposed at five weeks of age, kittens emerged blind.
