Iliac vein compression as risk factor for left- versus right-sided deep venous thrombosis: case-control study.

PURPOSE: To determine if compression of the left common iliac vein (LCIV) by the right common iliac artery is associated with left-sided deep venous thrombosis (DVT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This institutional review board-approved case-control study was performed in a cohort of 230 consecutive patients (94 men, 136 women; mean age, 57.5 years; range, 10-94 years) at one institution who had undergone contrast material-enhanced computed tomography of the pelvis prior to a diagnosis of unilateral DVT. Demographic data and information on risk factors were collected. Two board-certified radiologis

Effect of Screw Length and Geometry on Interfragmentary Compression in a Simulated Proximal Pole Scaphoid Fracture Model.

Background: The objective of this study was to determine interfragmentary compression forces based on screw length and geometry for simulated proximal scaphoid fractures. Methods: Sixty-four foam model simulated fractures were stabilized with screws of various length (10 mm, 18 mm, 20 mm, or 24 mm) and geometry (central threadless or fully threaded) across a proximal fracture. Interfragmentary compression was measured at the simulated fracture site upon fixation. An independent sample t test and 1-way analysis of variance were performed to assess differences in interfragmentary compression. Re

Empirical optimization of energy bin weights for compressing measurements with realistic photon counting x-ray detectors.

BACKGROUND: Photon counting detectors (PCDs) provide higher spatial resolution, improved contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), and energy discriminating capabilities. However, the greatly increased amount of projection data in photon counting computed tomography (PCCT) systems becomes challenging to transmit through the slip ring, process, and store. PURPOSE: This study proposes and evaluates an empirical optimization algorithm to obtain optimal energy weights for energy bin data compression. This algorithm is universally applicable to spectral imaging tasks including 2 and 3 material decomposition

Compressive pangenomics using mutation-annotated networks.

Pangenomics is an emerging field that uses collections of genomes, rather than a single reference, to reduce bias and capture intra-species diversity. However, existing pangenomic data formats face challenges in scaling to millions of genomes and primarily emphasize variation, often neglecting the underlying mutational events and evolutionary relationships. This work introduces Pangenome Mutation-Annotated Network (PanMAN), a lossless pangenome representation that achieves compression ratios ranging from 3.5-1,391× in file sizes compared to existing variation-preserving formats, with performan

Attention-Based Whole-Slide Image Compression Achieves Pathologist-Level Prescreening of Multiorgan Routine Histopathology Biopsies.

Screening programs for the early detection of cancers, such as colorectal and cervical cancers, have led to an increased demand for histopathological analysis of biopsies. Advanced image analysis with deep learning has shown the potential to automate cancer detection in digital pathology whole-slide images. In particular, weakly supervised learning can achieve whole-slide image classification without the need for tedious, manual annotations, using only slide-level labels. Here, we used data from n = 12,580 whole-slide images from n = 9141 tissue blocks to train and validate a weakly supervised

Effect of Arthrodesis Device Type and Trajectory on Subtalar Joint Compression.

The use of subtalar arthrodesis procedures has been widely implemented to relieve hindfoot issues after failure of conservative treatments; however, fusion failures persist in some patients with certain risk factors. Currently, surgeons utilize cannulated screws in these arthrodesis procedures to immobilize the subtalar joint. Recent clinical studies have demonstrated improved fusion outcomes in at-risk patients using sustained dynamic compression devices in the tibiotalocalcaneal complex. These devices utilize pseudoelastic nitinol which enables sustained dynamic compression when faced with p

Influence of intermittent compression cuff design on interface pressure and calf deformation: experimental results.

Intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) is widely used for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) prophylaxis. The technique involves periodic inflation of a compression cuff around a limb, which acts to simulate the muscle pump mechanism, encouraging venous blood flow. However, there is uncertainty regarding the relationship between compression, vascular effects and clinical outcomes. This study investigates calf compression provided by four IPC cuffs with different air bladder configurations. Interface pressure between the cuff and the skin surface is measured and magnetic resonance (MR) images are obt

An Overview of Vascular Compression Syndromes and Associations with Autonomic Dysfunction: A Review.

Background: Vascular compression syndromes are increasingly recognized as underdiagnosed contributors to morbidity in patients exhibiting dysautonomia. Underlying vascular compression syndromes affecting the head and neck, abdomen, pelvis, and lower extremities may influence venous return, neurohormonal signaling, and autonomic regulation. There is considerable clinical overlap among these syndromes, as well as between hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD) and dysautonomia, indicating possible shared or interacting pathophysiological mechanisms. Purpose/Aims: This hypothesis-generating narrat

The use of intraoperative electrophysiological monitoring in patients with decompression of the ulnar nerve near the elbow joint.

At the elbow, the ulnar nerve may be compressed either in the retrocondylar groove, in the cubital tunnel, or compressed by Osborne's band. Optimal surgical therapy should be directed at the specific site of involvement. It is more difficult to identify the level of ulnar nerve compression. Anatomical variations may make it difficult to identify the causes of ulnar neuropathy at the elbow. The data obtained by inspection, probing, or electroneurography do not allow one to reliably identify the compression level. Intraoperative electroneuromyography performed in conjunction with 14 ulnar nerve

Edema formation in spinal nerve roots induced by experimental, graded compression. An experimental study on the pig cauda equina with special reference to differences in effects between rapid and slow onset of compression.

Edema formation in spinal nerve roots of the pig cauda equina was studied following experimental compression at various pressure levels, durations, and rates of onset, using a fluorescence microscopic technique. The time-pressure thresholds for the occurrence of edema in the nerve roots were: following rapid onset of compression (0.05-0.1 seconds), 2 minutes at both 50 mm Hg and 200 mm Hg, and following slow onset of compression (the pressure was slowly increased during 15-20 seconds), 2 hours at 50 mm Hg and 2 minutes at 200 mm Hg. Generally, the edema formation was more pronounced after rapi

[Compression therapy in the treatment of acute deep vein thrombosis].

Especially in Europe patients with acute deep vein thrombosis (DVT) of the leg are treated with compression therapy. A look at the literature, however, reveals that the exact mechanism of compression therapy in the treatment of acute deep vein thrombosis is not completely understood. Effects on fibrinolysis, resolution of pain and swelling as well as a fixation of the thrombus towards the vessel wall have been discussed. The literature indicates that compression stockings were mostly used in the treatment of DVT although there is some evidence that inelastic compression bandages have a greater

Suspected epidural compression of the spinal cord and cauda equina by metastatic carcinoma. Clinical diagnosis and survival.

Data from 133 patients with cancer and suspected compression of the spinal cord or cauda equina was reviewed. Although there were differences in presenting symptoms and signs between the group of 62 patients with compression and the 71 without, no single symptom or sign discriminated adequately between the two groups. Multiple logistic regression was used to try to develop an index of signs and symptoms which could identify those without compression, thereby sparing them a myelogram. Eight characteristics, in combination, proved most effective as an index, but they were not perfect predictors

A point prevalence audit of inpatients with leg ulcers eligible for compression therapy in a large university NHS hospital.

OBJECTIVE: Compression therapy is the mainstay of treatment for venous leg ulceration. Several studies have evaluated leg ulcer management and compression in the community. However, little is known about the leg ulcer population and use of compression therapy in the hospital setting, where it is not often part of inpatient care. This study aimed to evaluate the proportion of inpatients with leg ulceration eligible for compression therapy. METHOD: A point prevalence audit was undertaken using three methods: patient electronic live report; a leg ulcer audit form; and an electronic record search

Incidence of unexpected positive histology in kyphoplasty.

OBJECTIVE: Kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty have become one of the most frequent surgical procedures in the treatment of vertebral compression fractures. Often, the cause of compression fractures is lowered bone mineral density as in osteoporosis. In the differential workup, also pathologic vertebral compression fractures need to be ruled out. Importantly, imaging techniques alone cannot safely differentiate between invasive lymphatic and osteoporotic vertebral fracture. Our goal was to identify the degree of unexpected positive histology in kyphoplasty for presumed osteoporotic vertebral compre

Imaging features of vascular compression in abdomen: Fantasy, phenomenon, or true syndrome.

Vascular structures in the abdomen can compress or be compressed by adjacent structures. Classic imaging findings of vascular compressions, including median arcuate ligament syndrome, superior mesenteric artery syndrome, nutcracker syndrome, portal biliopathy, May-Thurner syndrome, and ureteropelvic junction obstruction will be discussed here. It is important to correlate imaging findings and clinical data to identify asymptomatic vascular compression which requires no treatment, intermittent vascular compression with nonspecific or vague clinical manifestation, and the subset of patients with

Comparison of effectiveness and safety of different haemostatic materials in patients undergoing transradial coronary intervention and diagnosis: a protocol for systematic review and network meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Effective compression haemostasis is essential after transradial coronary procedures. However, evidence directly comparing different haemostatic materials remains limited. This study aims to compare and rank the efficacy and safety of different haemostatic materials used as adjuncts to compression after transradial coronary angiography and/or percutaneous coronary intervention, and to explore whether compression modality modifies their relative effects. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We will systematically search nine databases (Cochrane Library, Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, China Nat

An international study to explore the challenges faced by the medical device industry in the development of compression products and reimbursement.

Lack of agreement over the international classification for compression therapy contributes to confusion over what measures are required to capture patient-reported and cost-effective outcomes of compression therapy for the heterogenous patient population. The medical device industry that manufactures compression products has important insights into these iissues, which have not been previously explored. This knowledge could provide clarity for improving the development of compression products and use of outcome measures internationally, which could improve access and uptake of compression. Ei
