Strategies for improving music perception and enjoyment: a case study of a deafblind musician with cochlear implants.

OBJECTIVES: This study explores the experiences of a deafblind cochlear implant (CI) user, who is also a musician and a music therapist. It aims to provide insights into adaptive strategies that might improve music listening with CIs. METHODS: A qualitative case study framework was utilized, incorporating an in-depth semi-structured interview with the participant. This methodological approach facilitated a comprehensive examination of the participant's musical engagement and the evolution of their auditory experiences over time. The transcribed data were analyzed using thematic analysis to id

Executive Functions in a Population of Individuals with CHARGE Syndrome: Findings from Performance-Based and Rating Scale Measures According to a 3-Factor Model.

PURPOSE: To identify possible predictors of executive functions of individuals with CHARGE syndrome, as these will be important targets for interventions. METHODS: A population-based cross-sectional study investigating the executive functions of a representative sample of 35 Norwegians with CHARGE syndrome divided into two subgroups to handle their inherent heterogeneity. Both performance-based measures and rating scale findings were included and organized according to the 3-factor model of Miyake and colleagues. RESULTS: Both measures showed comprehensive executive dysfunctions within the p

Affordances for Motor Development in the Home Environment for Young Children with and without CHARGE Syndrome.

Affordances in the home environment are critical to early motor development. Currently, the home environment has not been examined in children with deafblindness or severe disabilities. The present study examined differences in, and relationships between, the home environment and motor development in children with and without CHARGE syndrome. CHARGE syndrome is a low-incidence, complex disorder with sensory and motor impairments. Participants included 28 parents of children with CHARGE syndrome and 32 parents of children without disabilities. Children with CHARGE syndrome achieved motor milest

Sustained release of antibiotic from poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) to prevent blinding infections after cataract surgery.

Intraocular lens implantation after opacified natural lens removal is the primary treatment for cataracts in developed countries. Cataract surgery is generally considered safe, but entails significant risks in countries where sophisticated sterile operating theaters are not widely available. Post-operative infection (endophthalmitis) is a potential blinding complication. Infection often results from bacterial colonization of the new lens implant and subsequent antibiotic-tolerant biofilm formation. To combat this risk, we developed a polymeric hydrogel system that can deliver effective levels

Establishing Genotype-phenotype Correlation in USH2A-related Disorders to Personalize Audiological Surveillance and Rehabilitation.

OBJECTIVE: USH2A-related disorders are characterised by genetic and phenotypic heterogeneity, and are associated with a spectrum of sensory deficits, ranging from deaf blindness to blindness with normal hearing. It has been previously proposed that the presence of specific USH2A alleles can be predictive of unaffected hearing. This study reports the clinical and genetic findings in a group of patients with USH2A-related disease and evaluates the validity of the allelic hierarchy model. PATIENTS AND INTERVENTION: USH2A variants from 27 adults with syndromic and nonsyndromic USH2A-related disea

Identification and analysis of deletion breakpoints in four Mohr-Tranebjærg syndrome (MTS) patients.

Mohr-Tranebjærg syndrome is an X-linked syndrome characterized by sensorineural hearing impairment in childhood, followed by progressive neurodegeneration leading to a broad phenotypic spectrum. Genetically MTS is caused by pathogenic variants in the TIMM8A gene, including gene deletions and larger contiguous gene deletions. Some of the latter involve the neighboring gene BTK, resulting in agammaglobulinemia. By next-generation mate-pair sequencing we have mapped the chromosomal deletion breakpoints of one MTS case and three XLA-MTS cases and used breakpoint-spanning PCR to fine map the breakp

Gerstmann-Sträussler-Scheinker disease with atypical presentation.

We describe a 37-year-old woman who presented with progressive deafness, visual loss and ataxia. She latterly developed neuropsychiatric problems, including cognitive impairment, paranoid delusions and episodes of altered consciousness. She was found to be heterozygous for the Q212P mutation in the prion protein gene. She died over a decade after initial presentation and a diagnosis of prion disease was confirmed at postmortem.

Neural plasticity in blind cochlear implant users.

This study, using positron emission tomography, investigates the cortical activation generated by auditory stimulation in two congenitally blind cochlear implant users. In the patient with a relatively short history of deafness, activity increased in both auditory cortices and fell in the visual cortices. The patient with a longer period of deafness had greater activation of the visual cortices than the auditory cortices. A similar pattern of activity was seen when this patient subsequently had a second cochlear implant inserted into the opposite ear. The neural pathways formed after the resto

Nursing perceptions toward Deaf and DeafBlind individuals: a cross-sectional study.

Communication is a significant barrier for persons who are Deaf and persons who are DeafBlind when accessing healthcare services. Most healthcare professionals are unfamiliar with sign language, which complicates the provision of holistic care. This cross-sectional study aimed to assess differences between employed nursing professionals and nursing students in three areas: motivation to learn Croatian Sign Language, knowledge about persons who are Deaf and persons who are DeafBlind, and opinions toward them. In both questionnaires, the same questions were asked for direct comparison between th

Genotype-phenotype variations in five Spanish families with Norrie disease or X-linked FEVR.

PURPOSE: Norrie disease (OMIM 310600) is a rare X-linked disorder characterized by congenital blindness in males. Approximately 40 to 50% of the cases develop deafness and mental retardation. X-linked familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (XL-FEVR) is a hereditary ocular disorder characterized by a failure of peripheral retinal vascularization. Both X-linked disorders are due to mutations in the NDP gene, which encodes a 133 amino acid protein called Norrin, but autosomal recessive (AR) and autosomal dominant (AD) forms of FEVR have also been described. In this study, we report the molecular fi

Fascinating wonderful network: Rete mirabile of the maxillary artery in cats - minireview.

Cats are one of the most common companion animals, and they differ from dogs in several important ways. Considering the central importance of anatomy in high-quality medicine, the treatment of the feline mandible, mostly during intraoral procedures requiring general anaesthesia, has many important features. In cats, the major artery of the brain is the maxillary artery that forms unique structure - the rete mirabile. The rete mirabile is a plexus like vascular structure that lies extracranially and communicates with brain arterial circle through the orbital fissure. The development of the brai

Refractory epilepsy and mitochondrial dysfunction due to GM3 synthase deficiency.

We report two children, born from consanguineous parents, who presented with early-onset refractory epilepsy associated with psychomotor delay, failure to thrive, blindness and deafness. Polarographic and spectrophotometric analyses in fibroblasts and liver revealed a respiratory chain (RC) dysfunction. Surprisingly, we identified a homozygous nonsense mutation in the GM3 synthase gene by using exome sequencing. GM3 synthase catalyzes the formation of GM3 ganglioside from lactosylceramide, which is the first step in the synthesis of complex ganglioside species. Mass spectrometry analysis revea

Hydranencephaly.

Hydranencephaly is a rare congenital condition where the greater portions of the cerebral hemispheres and the corpus striatum are replaced by cerebrospinal fluid and glial tissue. The meninges and the skull are well formed, which is consistent with earlier normal embryogenesis of the telencephalon. Bilateral occlusion of the internal carotid arteries in utero is a potential mechanism. Clinical features include intact brainstem reflexes without evidence of higher cortical activity. The infant's head size and the spontaneous reflexes such as sucking, swallowing, crying, and moving the arms and l

Causal variants screened by whole exome sequencing in a patient with maternal uniparental isodisomy of chromosome 10 and a complicated phenotype.

Uniparental disomy (UPD), which is the abnormal situation in which both copies of a chromosomal pair have been inherited from one parent, may cause clinical abnormalities by affecting genomic imprinting or causing autosomal recessive variation. Whole Exome Sequencing (WES) and chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA) are powerful technologies used to search for underlying causal variants. In the present study, WES was used to screen for candidate causal variants in the genome of a Chinese pediatric patient, who had been shown by CMA to have maternal uniparental isodisomy of chromosome 10. This wa

The Nordic Five to Fifteen questionnaire could provide the basis for a common neurological disability variable.

AIMS: Assessing disabilities in children is essential and Danish parents provide increasingly important feedback on how their child's disability affects daily living. The Nordic Five to Fifteen (FTF) parent questionnaire is widely used in Nordic countries to detect atypical or delayed development in children. Our study evaluated its internal validity and whether it could be used to generate a common disability variable across childhood neurological disorders and severities. METHODS: The 28-statement FTF questionnaire was completed by the parents of children with spina bifida, muscular disorde

Adoption and usability of a braille communication assistive device (CAD) for face-to-face and remote communication in two users with deafblindness.

PURPOSE: There are currently no best practice training methods with communication assistive devices (CAD) for individuals with deafblindness using a braille display notetaker connected to an iPhone. Therefore, to capture adoption and usability of braille CAD in clinic, the Technology development and evaluation model of Schulz et al. (2015) was applied. Objectives were 1-to measure the level of difficulty in life habits involving communication before, during and after training with a braille CAD, 2-to document the feasibility of training for face-to-face and remote communication, 3-to simulate

[An autopsy case of generalized seizures, myoclonus, blindness and deafness].

We have reported the clinical and autopsy findings in a case with generalized seizures, myoclonus, blindness and deafness which was accompanied by stroke-like episodes. This case was diagnosed as mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis & stroke-like episodes (MELAS) from these findings. Solitary and continuous lesions of softening were distributed in both hemispheres, more severely in the frontal and occipital poles. These lesions did not correspond to a vascular supply. The pulvinar, lateral and medial geniculate body of the thalamus, cerebellar vermis and dentate nucleus had small l
