An in vitro model to investigate filling of lateral canals.

Aims of this work were to examine lateral canals in extracted teeth, to propose a new technique to produce artificial lateral canals, and to compare two obturation techniques. Cleared roots were examined to record measure and shape of lateral canals. Artificial lateral canals were prepared on human demineralized teeth before final clearing. Specimens were divided in two groups: canals of group 1 were filled with Schilder's technique, canals of group 2 were filled with vertical compaction with apical backfilling. Stereomicroscopic analysis of lateral canal filling revealed lower filling rates i

Treatment of a human transosseous mandibular defect by guided bone regeneration.

The treatment of through-and-through human periapical lesions by barrier membrane techniques has not been reported in the periodontal literature. However, periodontists frequently perform this treatment. The authors present a case that demonstrates radiopacity after regeneration surgery of a human periapical transosseous mandibular defect, suggesting local bone regeneration. The surgical technique performed in this case was based on the principles of guided bone regeneration using a demineralized freeze-dried bone membrane (DFDBM). The bone membrane acted as an efficient barrier that excluded

[Indication, technique, and results of aortic valve and ascending aorta reconstruction].

Aortic valve replacement is the standard procedure in patients with aortic valve regurgitation (AR). Although long-term results for both biological and mechanical heart valves could be improved, a valve-sparing operation has several advantages especially in young patients. Alterations in the geometry of the aortic root, especially dilatation of the sinutubular junction, are the primary cause of AR in patients with aneurysms of the ascending aorta. In patients with a bicuspid aortic valve, AR is usually caused by a prolapse; with appropriate surgical experience, the prolapse can be corrected an

Development of tympanosclerosis: can predicting factors be identified?

HYPOTHESIS: The etiological hypothesis is that there might be factors triggering an immunological chain reaction that eventually leads to tympanosclerosis formation. BACKGROUND: Tympanosclerosis is a condition leading to a calcification process in the middle ear and, occasionally, also to the lining of the inner ear. This sometimes leads to hearing loss due to fixation of the middle ear ossicles. In severe cases. deafness may occur as a result of the inner ear impairment. Surgery is the treatment offered, often with poor long-term results, and, alternatively, prescription of hearing aids. Som

Types and incidence of human periapical lesions obtained with extracted teeth.

OBJECTIVES: To determine (1) the frequency of the incidence of abscess, granuloma, and radicular cyst among human periapical lesions obtained with extracted teeth; and (2) whether periapical cysts occur in two categories when histologically analyzed in relation to the root canals. STUDY DESIGN: A total of 256 lesions were analyzed. The specimens were decalcified and embedded in plastic. Serial sections or step-serial sections were prepared, and the sections were evaluated on the basis of predefined histopathologic criteria. RESULTS: The 256 specimens consisted of 35% periapical abscess, 50%

A clinical-radiographic study of allogenic demineralized dentin implants in cystic jaw cavities.

Different implantation materials have been used in cystic cavities in the jaws to accentuate and enhance healing following enucleation. No material has proved to be ideal. In the present study, allogenic demineralized dentin was used in a group of patients with jaw cysts. The observation period varied from 6 to 66 months. The dentin group (33 cases) appeared to have somewhat more immediate postoperative symptoms than the control group (37 cases), but had a lower incidence of operational defects and higher incidence of complete healing of the cyst cavity on radiographic examination.

Development of a zinc chloride-based chemo-mechanical system for potential minimally invasive dental caries removal system.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The chemo-mechanical caries-removal technique is known to offer advantages of selective dentin caries treatment while leaving healthy dental tissues intact. However, current sodium hypochlorite based reagents usually excessively damage dentin collagen. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop a novel chemo-mechanical caries-removal system to preserve the collagen network for subsequent prosthetic restorations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The calfskin-derived collagen was chosen as a model system to investigate the dissolution behavior of collagen under different oper

"UFO procedure" for massive aortic and mitral annular calcification involving left atrial and ventricular myocardium: a potential radical solution.

BACKGROUND: The "UFO procedure" was initially developed as a surgical option to enlarge the aortic annulus in patients requiring valve replacement. This technique can be employed to treat extensive endocarditis located in the intervalvular fibrous body (IVFB). One of the indications for a "UFO procedure" is massive aortic and mitral valve calcification. It is a challenging surgical procedure with a high risk of intraoperative complications. We present a 76-year-old male patient with massive aortic and mitral valve calcification involving the left atrium, the left ventricle and the left ventric

Hydrogen Peroxide Head Preparation: Enabling Cuttings and Anatomic Studies of Skull Base Dura Mater and Arachnoid Without Use of Drilling.

INTRODUCTION: Anatomic pieces that are preserved using formaldehyde allow us to undertake high-quality skull base studies. However, extensive drilling is often necessary, which can lead to damages to the dura mater and thus arachnoid. Formaldehyde and hydrogen peroxide can soften the bone, which, in turn, can be easily cut with a scalpel or removed with a curette. After having discovered this technique by chance, our aim was to establish a study protocol of the skull base dura mater without the use of the drill. METHODS: Ten heads were set with a 10% formalin solution and then injected with c

Evaluation of preparation, staining and microscopic techniques for counting incremental lines in cementum of human teeth.

Apposition of cementum occurs in phases resulting in two types of layers with different optical and staining properties that can be observed by light microscopy. Narrow, dark staining incremental lines are separated by wider bands of pale staining cementum. The distance from one line to the next represents a yearly increment deposit of cementum in many mammals, and counting these lines has been used routinely to estimate the age of the animals. Incremental lines in cementum have also been observed in sections of human teeth, and the object of the present investigation was to examine a number o

Severe calcification does not affect long-term outcome of mitral valve repair.

Some surgeons have suggested that the presence of severe calcification in the mitral valve annulus or leaflets precludes successful repair. Our institution has attempted to repair these calcified valves when good annular and leaflet mobility could be achieved by annular debridement and leaflet resection. From June 1979 through June 1993 558 mitral valve repairs were performed using Carpentier's techniques. When calcified valves were encountered, these techniques were modified to include annular debridement and mechanical leaflet decalcification. Calcification was identified preoperatively in 4

Visualization of the ultrastructural interface of cells with the outer and inner-surface of coral skeletons.

Crystalline, porous biomaterials, such as marine invertebrate skeletons, have been widely used for functional reconstruction of human tissues like bone and dental implants. Since in such an abrasive microenvironment adequate cell-material interactions are crucial for a successful treatment, it is of great importance to improve the means to examine these interactions. We developed a method that reveals the ultrastructure of the interface between coral skeletons and cultured neural cells to a higher quality than do traditional methods as it does not include damaging procedures like decalcificati

Effect of EDTA decalcification on estrogen receptor and progesterone receptor immunohistochemistry and HER2/neu fluorescence in situ hybridization in breast carcinoma.

Bone is the most common site of metastasis in breast carcinoma (BC). Treatments for metastatic BC depend on various factors, including the tumor's estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and HER2 status. Bone biopsies require decalcification which may affect the accuracy of ER and PR immunohistochemistry (IHC) and HER2 situ hybridization (FISH) studies. Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) decalcifying solutions have been theorized to have no significant impact on ER and PR IHC or HER2 FISH analyses. We completed a prospective study of the effect of EDTA decalcification on ER and

Effects of phosphoprotein moieties on the remineralization of human root caries.

The noncollagenous proteins, especially phosphoprotein, have been shown to modulate biomineralization. The objective of this study was to investigate the remineralization potential of human tooth root organic matrices which did or did not contain soluble non-collagenous proteins including phosphoprotein. Human tooth roots were completely demineralized using conditions that either removed or did not remove soluble phosphoprotein and were then subjected to remineralization conditions. Removal of soluble phosphoprotein resulted in remineralization while no remineralization occurred in tooth roots

Decalcification of schistosome eggs during staining of tissue sections: a potential source of diagnostic error.

Miracidial nuclei within calcified schistosome eggs are frequently mummified. Calcified eggs are often decalcified prior to or during the routine processing and staining of tissues, and mummified miracidial nuclei then stain clearly and are often arranged in the patterns seen in live eggs. These miracidia may be incorrectly assumed to be alive or to have died recently and thus be taken as evidence of an active infection requiring chemotherapy. The present observations demonstrate the decalcification of mineralized eggs by hematoxylin preparations used for routine staining of tissue sections.

A novel, rapid, and low cost method for preparing tissues with metallic stents for routine histology.

BACKGROUND: Coronary artery stenting has become a common procedure and cardiovascular pathology specimens containing these metallic stents are accordingly becoming common. Histologic examination of stented vessels is imperative, but special techniques are needed due to the presence of metal within the tissue. We describe a rapid and inexpensive method for preparing stented vascular specimens for routine histology suitable for use in almost any histology laboratory. DESIGN: After formalin fixation and decalcification, stented vascular segments were freeze-embedded and sectioned using a handhel

Osseointegration of autograft versus osteogenic protein-1 in posterolateral spinal arthrodesis: emphasis on the comparative mechanisms of bone induction.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Recent studies have documented increased fusion success afforded by bone morphogenetic proteins versus autogenous graft for posterolateral spinal arthrodesis. PURPOSE: The current study was designed to investigate the time-course maturation processes of lumbar posterolateral arthrodeses performed with Osteogenic Protein-1 (Stryker Biotech, Inc., Hopkinton, MA, USA) (rhOP-1) versus "gold standard" autograft. STUDY DESIGN: The primary focus of this study was to compare the histologic mechanisms of posterolateral osseointegration produced by "hot topic" growth factors. METH
