Differential features of chronic cough according to etiology and the simple decision tree for predicting causes.

Finding etiology of chronic cough is an essential part of treatment. Although guidelines include many laboratory tests for diagnosis, these are not possible in many primary care centers. We aimed to identify the characteristics and the differences associated with its cause to develop a clinical prediction model. Adult subjects with chronic cough who completed both Korean version of the Leicester Cough Questionnaire (K-LCQ) and COugh Assessment Test (COAT) were enrolled. Clinical characteristics of each etiology were compared using features included in questionnaires. Decision tree models were

Decision Tree Based Classification of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms Using Geometry Quantification Measures.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is an asymptomatic aortic disease with a survival rate of 20% after rupture. It is a vascular degenerative condition different from occlusive arterial diseases. The size of the aneurysm is the most important determining factor in its clinical management. However, other measures of the AAA geometry that are currently not used clinically may also influence its rupture risk. With this in mind, the objectives of this work are to develop an algorithm to calculate the AAA wall thickness and abdominal aortic diameter at planes orthogonal to the vessel centerline, and t

Periodontal surgery of the maxillary impacted canine for orthodontic purposes: Proposal for a surgical decision tree.

In a private practice, between January 2010 and December 2015, 621 impacted teeth were exposed for orthodontic purposes. The majority were maxillary canines (464=74.71%), followed by maxillary central incisors (36=5.80%), mandibular canines (32=5.15%) and, finally, second premolars (30=4.83%). The 464 maxillary canines were present in 356 patients with a mean age, at the time of the intervention, of 15 years and 3 months (7 years and 10 months to 45 years and one month). The gender distribution was 60.7% (F) to 39.3% (M); 32.8% of maxillary canines were buccal and 67.2% were palatal. Only 6 ca

Decision tree algorithms predict the diagnosis and outcome of dengue fever in the early phase of illness.

BACKGROUND: Dengue is re-emerging throughout the tropical world, causing frequent recurrent epidemics. The initial clinical manifestation of dengue often is confused with other febrile states confounding both clinical management and disease surveillance. Evidence-based triage strategies that identify individuals likely to be in the early stages of dengue illness can direct patient stratification for clinical investigations, management, and virological surveillance. Here we report the identification of algorithms that differentiate dengue from other febrile illnesses in the primary care setting

A preliminary ethnographic decision tree model of injection drug users' (IDUs) needle sharing.

This article presents a preliminary ethnographic decision tree model of the needle sharing and HIV risk decision-making processes common to injection drug users (IDUs) in Houston, Texas. Ethnographic tree decision modeling is a rigorous qualitative method used to understand and predict how and why people in certain groups do things the way they do. The model was developed from data collected from focus group and individual interviews and naturalistic observations. The research participants were White, African-American and Latino male and female IDUs. The model presents IDUs' needle-sharing rou

Decision tree for improving the impact of equity-focused public health service delivery and research.

INTRODUCTION: An equity focus in public health service delivery and research is needed to address persistent health inequities. This requires not only redistribution of health resources and services to prioritised populations, but also attention to the process through which initiatives are selected, designed and implemented, and how these engage with and address the social determinants of health. Applying this in practice can be challenging, and there is limited practical guidance for public health organisations. METHODS: We adapted a decision tree to support equity-focused public health serv

Identifying Key Predictors of Nursing Workload in Emergency Infusion Rooms: A Decision Tree Approach.

Purpose: Accurate assessment of nursing workload is essential for staffing allocation and operational management in emergency infusion rooms. However, workload generation is influenced by complex and potentially nonlinear interactions among patient volume, treatment duration, and care activities, which may not be adequately captured by conventional statistical approaches. This study aimed to identify key predictors associated with nursing workload intensity and develop an interpretable workload stratification framework using a Classification and Regression Tree (CRT) model. Methods: Daily oper

Forecasting Local Surges in COVID-19 Hospitalizations through Adaptive Decision Tree Classifiers.

IntroductionDuring the COVID-19 pandemic, many communities across the United States experienced surges in hospitalizations, which strained the local hospital capacity. Some risk metrics, such as the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) Community Levels, were developed to predict the impact of COVID-19 on the community-level health care system based on routine surveillance data. However, they had limited utility as they were not routinely updated based on accumulating data and were not directly linked to specific outcomes, such as surges in COVID-19 hospitalizations beyond local

A decision tree model for chondral lesion management in the knee based on clinical and mathematical integration.

BACKGROUND: Focal chondral defects of the knee present a complex therapeutic challenge due to the heterogeneous nature of lesion characteristics and patient-specific factors. Despite multiple available treatment modalities, no universally accepted decision-making framework currently exists to guide individualized care. This study proposes and validates a clinically grounded, mathematically structured decision tree algorithm to stratify treatment options based on key anatomical, biomechanical, and demographic parameters. METHODS: A comprehensive literature review was performed to define eviden

Decision tree model to predict one-year survival in ambulatory patients with advanced cancer.

BACKGROUND: An accurate prognostication is crucial for end-of-life decision-making in advanced cancer care. While existing prognostic tools focus on short-term survival (weeks/months), there is a paucity of studies that have examined the long-term prediction at one year. A one-year timeframe is regarded as a general indicator of palliative care referral; however, there are many uncertain issues. This study aimed to develop a one-year survival prediction model using objective parameters for patients with advanced cancer. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of data from a Korean prospective

Novel decision tree models predict the overall survival of patients with submandibular gland cancer.

BACKGROUND: While the accurate prediction of the overall survival (OS) in patients with submandibular gland cancer (SGC) is paramount for informed therapeutic planning, the development of reliable survival prediction models has been hindered by the rarity of SGC cases. The purpose of this study is to identify key prognostic factors for OS in SGC patients using a large database and construct decision tree models to aid the prediction of survival probabilities in 12, 24, 60 and 120 months. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study using the Surveillance, Epidemiology and
