RATIONALE: Degloving injury of the upper limb often extends to underlying tendons and bone, which is at high risk of treatment failure if only simple reattachment of defatted avulsed skins was performed. Pelnac dermal regeneration template could be used as a treatment choice for necrosis of the reattached avulsed skins in a degloving injury.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 48-year-old woman with a degloving injury of the right forearm, wrist, and hand received initial treatment by reattachment of the defatted avulsed skins over the wound bed. However, 17 days postoperatively, the reattached skins develop

In degloving injury of the thumb the large skin defect needs cover with sensate, glabrous and pliable skin. Although coverage of this defect with a sensate free flap from the foot is the best choice, most commonly, cover is achieved using a non-sensate distant pedicle flap. Between 2001 and 2003, degloving injuries of the thumb in eight patients were reconstructed using a sensate radial forearm flap in the sensory territory of the lateral ante-brachial nerve of the forearm which was repaired to the digital nerve of the thumb (six cases) or to a branch of the sensory radial nerve (two cases). The dorsal metacarpal artery flap (DMAF) is irrefutable as an effective way of repairing long finger defects, and hand surgeons might consider using it for long finger reconstruction or degloved injury repair. Unfortunately, the DMAF containing a single dorsal metacarpal artery (DMA) hinders the treatment effect. The sensory restoration of long fingers and the reconstruction of phalangeal joints and tendon grafts are unsolved challenges as well. We reported our experience in reconstructing the index and middle finger by a reverse-island flap with two DMAs and dorsal metacarpal nerves (DMNs) wi

It is extremely rare for blunt abdominal trauma to result in serious injuries to hollow organs. Degloving injuries of the colon are one of the rarest injuries following blunt abdominal trauma. Intestinal degloving is often seen following rapid deceleration, changes in velocity, crushes and motor vehicle collisions (MVCs). Victims with intestinal degloving injuries can experience vague symptoms despite the severity of the lesion. We present the case of a 21-year-old male with insulin-dependent type 1 diabetes who was involved in a high-speed MVC. He sustained second- and third-degree burns to t

BACKGROUND: Degloving injuries of the extremities are well documented; however, there are few reports of degloving injuries to the mandible. A literature review demonstrates several cases of mandibular degloving in pediatric patients. However, no isolated mandibular degloving injuries have been reported in adults.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of a 21-year-old male who presented to the emergency department with facial trauma after a motorcycle accident. Initial examination of the head and neck showed ecchymosis and edema overlying the left periorbital area, eye closure secondary to periorbita

Closed degloving injuries are uncommon, high-energy injuries that separate the bony structures from the soft tissue and frequently result in amputation. Because the epidermis is often intact, it is difficult to visualize the extent of the soft tissue damage. Although there is no gold standard of treatment for closed degloving injuries at present, previous cases have reported that neurovascular presentation is a key predictor of amputation Herein, we report a closed degloving injury involving the second through fifth phalanges of the left foot following a crushing injury with a forklift. Morel-Lavallee lesions (MLL) are closed degloving injuries that have been rarely described in the pediatric literature. These internal degloving injuries can have serious complications and long-term morbidity. Early diagnosis and intervention is imperative. We present the case of a 20-month-old with MLL of the thigh.

Injuries to the penis and scrotum are both physically and mentally traumatic. If poorly managed in the acute setting, these injuries may become long-term problems or permanent disabilities. The purpose of this study was to review our approach to degloving injuries of the penis and scrotum and to present our experience. Over the past 25 years, we have cared for eight patients with complete degloving injuries of the genitalia. Farm equipment accidents were responsible for the majority of injuries. We attempted to close all wounds of the denuded penis and near-total avulsed scrotum at the initial

Closed internal degloving is a significant soft tissue injury associated with pelvic trauma in which the subcutaneous tissue is torn away from the underlying fascia, creating a cavity filled with hematoma and liquefied fat. It commonly occurs over the greater trochanter, but may also occur in the flank, buttock and lumbodorsal region, and it is known as a Morel-Lavallee lesion. The diagnosis of closed degloving injuries is based on physical and ultrasonographic examinations. The presence of a soft fluctuant area is the hallmark physical finding. Decreased cutaneous sensation is often associate

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Degloving injuries of the hand or fingers have a devastating presentation which challenges a surgeon to conduct reconstruction in order to resurface the naked finger and recover its function. The gold standard treatment for degloving injuries is using skin grafting and flap. The pedicle of groin flap is based on superficial circumflex iliac artery. It is one of standard flaps used in reconstruction of degloving fingers. In this study, we use groin flap for reconstruction of traumatic total degloving little finger.

INTRODUCTION: Back-degloving injuries are rare but severe consequences of high-energy blunt trauma. These injuries involve the separation of skin and subcutaneous tissue from the underlying fascia, muscle, or bone, and may present as open or closed lesions. Closed injuries, or Morel-Lavallée lesions, can be particularly insidious due to intact dermis concealing deep fluid accumulation, necrosis, and infection.
CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 61-year-old male who sustained extensive polytrauma following a motorcycle-versus-car collision, with emphasis on his spinal injuries and delayed-o

Injury to the male external genitalia and rupture of the diaphragm, are two very uncommon autopsy findings. To the best of our knowledge such a combination of injuries has not been reported in one particular case of autopsy in an English scientific literature. Degloving of the male external genitalia & rupture of the diaphragm may result from motor vehicle accidents, industrial accidents, gunshot & stab injuries. A rare case of traumatic degloving injury of the male external genitalia associated with rupture of the diaphragm & intermingling of thoracic & abdominal viscera is presented here.

There have been sparse reports in literature of avulsion and degloving injuries of individual areas of face like the nose, eyelids, ear and even mandible. Hemi-facial degloving is extremely rare. We present a case of post-assault degloving of the nose, part of forehead with anterior wall of frontal sinus, entire upper and lower eyelids and the cheek. Proper planning and staging of the surgical procedures and use of local flaps, meticulous and proper alignment of tissues gave us good aesthetic and functional outcome with a satisfied patient.

Compressive, tortional and abrasive deforming forces are translated to the limbs during high energy trauma. The long bones may be fractured in many patterns with a varying extent of fragmentation and comminution but the soft-tissues appear to absorb the forces in a predictable way. We retrospectively reviewed a series of 79 complex limb injuries treated in a dedicated centre where the clinical notes and photo-documentation were meticulously kept and where the outcomes were known. The soft-tissue injuries were then described and revealed four patterns of injury: abrasion/avulsion, non-circumfer

Revascularization of the degloved skin is generally accepted as the best option for the management of totally degloved hands. Nevertheless, the selection of vessels for anastomoses is usually difficult in this situation, and insufficient perfusion of the degloved hand skin is common after arterial repair. We present 2 cases of patients who sustained totally degloved hand injuries. Favorable outcomes of replantation were achieved with added arteriovenous anastomoses between the dorsal veins of the degloved hand skin and the digital arteries.

Degloving injuries are common in trauma and represent a spectrum of complex wounds, the management of which may be highly challenging especially in the paediatric population. In severe injuries leading to wounds reaching tendon and bone, vascularity is compromised precluding traditional wound management, and sometimes necessitating amputation. This report highlights the use of a dermal regeneration template combined with vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) in the treatment of complex traumatic degloving wounds. Here, we present a case of a five-year-old boy who sustained a high-energy shear injury t

BACKGROUND: Traumatic degloving injuries of the foot are rare but carry a substantial risk of limb loss, particularly in the presence of exposed underlying tendon, bone, or joints. We present a case report of a severe traumatic foot degloving managed with staged reconstruction using a biodegradable temporizing matrix (BTM) followed by split-thickness skin grafting (STSG) to achieve limb salvage.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 22-year-old male patient sustained a severe right foot degloving injury, with several associated metatarsophalangeal dislocations and fractures, following a traumatic rail-car
