This article provides an ethical analysis and assessment of various actual and proposed policies of organ procurement and distribution in light of moral principles already embedded in U.S. institutions, laws, policies, and practices. Evaluating different methods of acquisition of human body parts--donation (express and presumed), sales, abandonment, and expropriation--the author argues for laws and policies, including required request, to maintain and facilitate express donation of organs by individuals and their families. Such laws and policies need adequate time for a determination of their

BACKGROUND: The inpatient care of patients with non-communicable chronic diseases (NCDs) often involves extended stays, where the human quality of nursing care is as relevant as the technical interventions. However, dehumanization in daily practice, manifested in impersonal routines, deficient communication, and inattention to the patient’s values, erodes trust and wellbeing. Guided by Jean Watson’s theory of human caring, this study explored the lived experiences of hospitalized patients in relation to nursing care in Mexican public hospitals. METHODS: A qualitative study using a hermeneutic-

In the context of sport, a growing body of research has reported the prevalence of violence against athletes, including sexual, physical, and psychological violence and neglect, experienced by both women and men in sport. Preliminary research has reported that gender-diverse individuals, specifically transgender athletes, may have a greater vulnerability to experiences of violence in sport, but this remains an under-researched population. In addition to limited research specifically on violence experienced by transgender athletes in sport, there is also only emerging research on virtual violen

Criminal sentencing attitudes can reflect psychological dispositions concerning agency, hierarchy, blame, and rehabilitation. This exploratory pilot examined whether established contemplative practice is associated with a less punitive profile and whether legal professionals show differences following a four-week Anapana programme. Ninety adults participated in three cohorts: experienced meditators (n = 30), meditation-naïve controls (n = 30), and legal professionals or advanced law trainees assessed before and after the programme (n = 30). The study assessed 21 outcomes: 15 core outcomes cove

BACKGROUND: Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to revolutionize healthcare by enhancing diagnostic accuracy, streamlining administrative tasks, and improving patient care. However, the integration of AI into clinical practice faces significant barriers, particularly in nursing. Nurses, like frontline healthcare providers, are uniquely positioned to observe and experience these challenges. Understanding their perspectives can offer valuable insights into the obstacles hindering AI adoption in nursing practice, especially within acute care settings.
AIMS: This study aimed to explore

BACKGROUND: Intensive care units are high-acuity environments characterized by time pressure, medical complexity, and organizational demands. These conditions may influence clinicians' ability to provide patient-centered care and contribute to forms of care perceived as fragmented or dehumanizing.
OBJECTIVE: To examine how ICU clinicians describe and make sense of the pressures shaping everyday critical care practice, and how these pressures give rise to interacting patterns of care, including those described as hurry, blur, burden, and cruelty.
METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study usin

BACKGROUND: Obstetric literature lacks clarity on what constitutes Mistreatment in Maternity Care (MMC). This includes dehumanized care, excessive interventions, and medicalization of a natural process.
AIMS: To estimate the prevalence of MMC by developing multiple-source indicators and to determine their relationship with sociodemographic and childbirth characteristics.
METHODS: Observational and cross-sectional multicentric study with 978 participants contacted by consecutive recruitment. Obstetric practices were collected from self-administered questionnaires and the available information

OBJECTIVE: The childbirth experience can be traumatic for women, with negative repercussions on their mental health, mother-child bonding, and subsequent infant development. The aim of this study is to analyze the negative birth experience, through indicators of obstetric violence (OV), as a risk factor for the development of Perinatal Posttraumatic Stress (P-PTS) in early postpartum. Additionally, we seek to explore the buffering impact of other variables on the development of P-PTS symptomatology.
METHODS: A total of 236 postpartum women were surveyed online, between the fourth and sixth we

BACKGROUND: Collaborative care relationships form a key component of recovery-oriented mental healthcare, but can be disrupted if service users feel judged by professionals. Professionals can express stigmatizing attitudes through microaggressions, i.e. subtle forms of discrimination that have a negative cumulative effect. People with psychosis have been found to regularly experience overt and subtle forms of stigma in mental healthcare. This study aims to expand our understanding of the various forms and consequences of microaggression from a service user perspective.

The interpersonal difficulties documented in chronic excessive drinking might foster the progression toward severe alcohol use disorder (SAUD). Characterizing these interpersonal difficulties and their commonalities with patients already presenting a diagnosed SAUD is needed to develop targeted prophylactic interventions. Patients with SAUD present metadehumanization (i.e., the perception of being considered as less than human by others), which is associated with deleterious consequences (e.g., reduced fundamental needs satisfaction, increased negative emotions, reduced self-esteem, disrupted

Although transgender women of color, specifically Black and Latina experience gender-based violence in a variety of contexts, one of the most consistently reported is from a dating or romantic partner. This qualitative study sought to understand the manifestations and consequences of stigma experienced by transgender women of color in their dating or romantic relationships. Between January and February 2019, we purposively recruited 33 transgender women of color to participate in five focus group discussions and complete a brief survey. We employed both inductive and deductive approaches to co

Home enteral nutrition (HEN) is essential for patients with a functioning gastrointestinal tract who cannot meet nutritional needs orally, yet outpatient management remains complex, resource-intensive, and supported by a limited evidence base. Artificial intelligence (AI) may augment HEN care by extending monitoring, education, risk assessment, documentation support, and operational coordination into the home environment. Consistent with the narrative review format, this article uses a pragmatic, transparent synthesis of influential HEN-specific literature, relevant clinical nutrition evidence

BACKGROUND: Palliative care nurses, who are consistently exposed to patients in the advanced stages of life-threatening illnesses, are at heightened risk of experiencing emotional distress and compassion fatigue, which can compromise the quality of care and patient satisfaction. This study aimed to explore the perceptions of palliative care nurses regarding compassion fatigue and to develop a comprehensive definition of this concept based on their professional experiences. METHODS: Employing a conventional qualitative content analysis approach, 17 Iranian palliative care nurses were recruited

In the context of the over-representation of women who are Indigenous in prisons and historical and structural barriers to health, we undertook a scoping review to understand research regarding the reproductive and maternal health experiences of Indigenous women in prison in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the USA. We searched online databases in May 2022 since inception, as well as Google and governmental websites between December 2022 and March 2023. We identified 8 eligible articles. Most studies (5) were conducted in Australia, while 2 were conducted in Canada and 1 in the USA. There w

BACKGROUND: Drug use-related stigma amplifies the harms faced by people who use drugs (PWUD). Media often dehumanizes PWUD, particularly those using xylazine, a veterinary sedative and opioid adulterant, by labeling them with terms like "zombie." This perpetuates discrimination and stigma, distracting from the public health crisis. To assess this, we conducted a content analysis to quantify the prevalence of stigmatizing terms like "zombie" and related imagery in xylazine-related web-based media.
METHODS: We analyzed web-based news media reporting on xylazine from October 1, 2022, to Septembe
