Neurobiological metric of cortical delay discounting differentiates risk for self- and other-directed violence among trauma-exposed individuals.

Self- and other-directed violence (SDV/ODV) contribute to elevated rates of mortality. Early trauma exposure shows robust positive associations with these forms of violence but alone does not distinguish those at heightened risk for later engagement in SDV/ODV. Novel assessment metrics could aid early identification efforts for individuals with vulnerabilities to violence perpetration. This study examined a novel neurobiological measure of impulsive choice for reward as a potential moderator of associations between childhood trauma exposure and lifetime SDV/ODV. A high-risk community sample of

Juvenile exposure to methylphenidate and guanfacine in rats: effects on early delay discounting and later cocaine-taking behavior.

RATIONALE: Both methylphenidate (MPH), a catecholamine reuptake blocker, and guanfacine, an alpha2A agonist, are used to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Childhood impulsivity, including delay discounting, is associated with increased substance use during adolescence. These effects can be mitigated by juvenile exposure to MPH, but less is known about the long-term effects of developmental exposure to guanfacine in males and females. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to determine sex differences and dose-dependent effects of juvenile exposure to MPH or guanfacine on delay-discou

Delay discounting differentiates pre-adolescents at high and low risk for substance use disorders based on family history.

BACKGROUND: Youth with family histories of substance use disorders (FH+) are at increased risk for developing substance use disorders relative to those without such histories (FH-). FH+ individuals show deficits in impulse control that parallel those in individuals with substance use disorders. Elucidating how specific components of impulse control are affected in FH+ pre-adolescents would advance our understanding of how deficits in impulse control relate to risk of substance use disorders. METHOD: A total of 386 children (305 FH+, 81 FH-; ages 10-12) with no histories of regular alcohol or

The Value of Clean Air: Comparing Discounting of Delayed Air Quality and Money Across Magnitudes.

The detrimental health effects of exposure to air pollution are well established. Fostering behavioral change concerning air quality may be challenging because the detrimental health effects of exposure to air pollution are delayed. Delay discounting, a measure of impulsive choice, encapsulates this process of choosing between the immediate conveniences of behaviors that increase pollution and the delayed consequences of prolonged exposure to poor air quality. In Experiment 1, participants completed a series of delay-discounting tasks for air quality and money. We found that participants disco

Alcohol demand, delayed reward discounting, and craving in relation to drinking and alcohol use disorders.

A behavioral economic approach to alcohol use disorders (AUDs) emphasizes both individual and environmental determinants of alcohol use. The current study examined individual differences in alcohol demand (i.e., motivation for alcohol under escalating conditions of price) and delayed reward discounting (i.e., preference for immediate small rewards compared to delayed larger rewards) in 61 heavy drinkers (62% with an AUD). In addition, based on theoretical accounts that emphasize the role of craving in reward valuation and preferences for immediate rewards, craving for alcohol was also examined

Pathological gamblers, with and without substance use disorders, discount delayed rewards at high rates.

Pathological gambling is classified as a disorder of impulse control, yet little research has evaluated behavioral indices of impulsivity in gamblers. The rates at which rewards delayed in time are subjectively devalued may be a behavioral marker of impulsivity. This study evaluated delay discounting in 60 pathological gamblers and 26 control participants. Gamblers were divided into those with (n = 21) and without (n = 39) substance use disorders. A hypothetical $1,000 reward was delayed at intervals ranging from 6 hr to 25 years, and immediate rewards varied from $1 to $999. Pathological gamb

One-year predictions of delayed reward discounting in the adolescent brain cognitive development study.

Delayed reward discounting (DRD) refers to the extent to which an individual devalues a reward based on a temporal delay and is known to be elevated in individuals with substance use disorders and many mental illnesses. DRD has been linked previously with both features of brain structure and function, as well as various behavioral, psychological, and life-history factors. However, there has been little work on the neurobiological and behavioral antecedents of DRD in childhood. This is an important question, as understanding the antecedents of DRD can provide signs of mechanisms in the developm

Episodic Future Thinking as an Intervention for Alcohol Use Disorder: Effects on Delay Discounting and Real-World Alcohol Consumption.

Episodic future thinking (EFT) is a promising intervention for alcohol use disorder (AUD) as it has been shown to decrease delay discounting (DD) and alcohol valuation. In the current randomized controlled trial, we evaluated the effects of EFT on DD, behavioral economic demand, and daily measures of real-world alcohol consumption among individuals with AUD. Sixty-four non-treatment-seeking adults with AUD who wished to reduce or quit drinking but had no immediate treatment plans were randomized to EFT (n = 34) or control episodic thinking (CET; n = 30). Participants completed four in-laborato

Narrative episodic future thinking reduces delay discounting and enhances goal salience in the general population: an online feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Delay discounting is the tendency when people choose an immediate smaller reward over a delayed, larger reward in decision-making. Higher delay discounting is associated with maladaptive behaviours that can interfere with long-term goal pursuits, whilst low delay discounting is associated with better outcomes in health, academic, and social domains. Episodic Future Thinking is a promising strategy for decreasing delay discounting. Narrative Episodic Future Thinking (NEFT) has shown to be more effective than traditional Episodic Future Thinking. NEFT involves imagining life experien

Genome-wide association study of delay discounting identifies 11 loci and reveals transdiagnostic associations across mental and physical health.

Delay discounting (DD), a person's preference for smaller immediate rewards over larger delayed rewards, is a heritable trait that is associated with psychiatric and physical outcomes, yet the biological mechanisms underlying these links are not known. We performed a GWAS of DD using 134,935 23andMe research participants and identified 11 genome-wide significant loci. We did not replicate our previously reported association with rs6528024 (chrXq13.3, GPM6B; P = 5.30 × 10-02). The SNP-heritability of DD was 9.85 ± 0.57%. We observed genetic correlations between DD and 73 behavioral, physical, a

Additive roles of tobacco and cannabis co-use in relation to delay discounting in a sample of heavy drinkers.

RATIONALE: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is associated with steeper delay discounting rates; however, it is unknown whether substance co-use, particularly cannabis use, has an additive effect on discounting rates among heavy drinkers. Furthermore, it is unclear whether substance co-use and delay discounting are independently associated with AUD severity. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine whether alcohol, tobacco, and cannabis co-use impacts delay discounting rates. We also sought to determine whether substance co-use and delay discounting were associated with AUD symptom cou

Empirical examination of working memory performance and its neural correlates in relation to delay discounting in two large samples.

The neurobiological basis of working memory and delay discounting are theorized to overlap, but few studies have empirically examined these relations in large samples. To address this, we investigated the association of neural activation during an fMRI N-Back working memory task with delay discounting area, as well as in- and out-of-scanner working memory measures. These analyses were conducted in two large task fMRI datasets, the Human Connectome Project and the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study. Although in- and out-of-scanner working memory performance were significantly associat

Patients with cocaine use disorder exhibit reductions in delay discounting with episodic future thinking cues regardless of incarceration history.

Research examining episodic future thinking (EFT; i.e., imagining oneself in future contexts) in community samples has demonstrated reduced discounting of delayed rewards when personalized event cues are included to prompt EFT related to reward latencies. While this EFT effect was recently demonstrated in individuals with substance use disorders, it is not yet known if it manifests similarly in individuals with and without a significant incarceration history-the latter being at elevated risk for negative outcomes including criminal recidivism. Individuals with cocaine use disorder (n = 35) ide

Effects of simulated and real opioid withdrawal on delay discounting for opioids and money in people who use fentanyl daily.

Delay discounting describes the devaluation of consequences as the delay to their occurrence increases, which can yield a preference for smaller, sooner over larger, later rewards. Conceptual models and preliminary data suggest that delay discounting is exacerbated in deprivation states, including opioid withdrawal, which can shift choice allocation to more immediate rewards. Although withdrawal is hypothesized to affect decision making in opioid use disorder, research that experimentally manipulates withdrawal in people with opioid use disorder is limited by feasibility considerations. Simula

The neural substrates responsible for reward sensitivity association with delay discounting: left dorsal anterior cingulate cortex connectivity with right precuneus.

Delay discounting refers to the tendency to devalue rewards as the delay to their receipt increases. Reward sensitivity, defined as an individual's responsiveness to rewarding stimuli, has been suggested to influence delay discounting behavior. However, the neural mechanisms underlying this association remain largely unexplored. In the present study, we investigated the neural basis of the relationship between reward sensitivity and delay discounting using voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) analyses. Behaviorally, reward sensitivity was positively co

Incorporating socioeconomic status into studies on delay discounting and health via subjective financial status: An initial validation in tobacco use.

Delayed reward discounting (DRD) refers to the extent to which an individual devalues a reward based on its delay in time and has been linked to a wide variety of health behaviors. Because it is commonly measured using monetary rewards, income is typically used as a covariate to adjust for a person's socioeconomic status. Standard financial income measures have several limitations, such as not incorporating pertinent considerations like cost of living or number of financial dependents. This study examined a novel subjective financial status measure that uses a simple omnibus self-attribution a

Effects of mindful eating training on delay and probability discounting for food and money in obese and healthy-weight individuals.

Obese individuals tend to behave more impulsively than healthy weight individuals across a variety of measures, but it is unclear whether this pattern can be altered. The present study examined the effects of a mindful eating behavioral strategy on impulsive and risky choice patterns for hypothetical food and money. In Experiment 1, 304 participants completed computerized delay and probability discounting tasks for food-related and monetary outcomes. High percent body fat (PBF) predicted more impulsive choice for food, but not small-value money, replicating previous work. In Experiment 2, 102
