Routine EEG with quantitative analysis to detect delayed cerebral ischemia in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the ability of routine electroencephalography (rEEG) to predict delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). METHODS: Single-center prospective study including adult patients with aSAH. Two rEEG recordings with quantitative analysis and transcranial Doppler sonography (TCD) were performed, within the first 72 h (EEG1 and TCD1) and between days 4-7 (EEG2 and TCD2). Multivariate logistic regression was performed to identify DCI predictors. RESULTS: Seventeen (25.4 %) of 67 patients developed DCI. In qualitative analysis, no patient with a n

Opioid depression of respiration in neonatal rats.

1. The effects of opioid receptor agonists and antagonists on the breathing pattern of neonatal rats were studied. Three experimental approaches were taken. In the first approach, the effects of opioid agonists and antagonists on the spontaneous respiratory neural activity generated by brainstem-spinal cords isolated from neonatal rats aged 0-4 days postnatal (P0-4) maintained in vitro were studied. Secondly, similar studies were performed utilizing medullary slice preparations consisting of respiratory rhythm-generating regions (pre-Bötzinger complex). Thirdly, whole-body plethysmographic rec

Effects of Mel B arsobal and alpha-difluoromethylornithine on the awakening electroencephalogram of humans with gambiense trypanosomiasis disease: preliminary report.

Five males and three females, at the encephalic stage of sleeping sickness, were submitted to trypanocide therapies. Three of the patients were treated with the Mel B Arsobal drug, the five others with difluoromethylornithine, using different protocols. Awakening electroencephalographic data were obtained prior to treatment and, at regular intervals, during and after treatment. Prior to treatment the awakening tracings showed important abnormalities (slow delta waves were superimposed on theta background rhythms). During treatment (except in one patient treated with Arsobal) recordings returne

EEG in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

Electroecenphalography (EEG) is an integral part of the diagnostic process in patients with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). The EEG has therefore been included in the World Health Organisation diagnostic classification criteria of CJD. In sporadic CJD (sCJD), the EEG exhibits characteristic changes depending on the stage of the disease, ranging from nonspecific findings such as diffuse slowing and frontal rhythmic delta activity (FIRDA) in early stages to disease-typical periodic sharp wave complexes (PSWC) in middle and late stages to areactive coma traces or even alpha coma in preterminal E

Role of interventricular dispersion of repolarization in acquired torsade-de-pointes arrhythmias: reversal by magnesium.

OBJECTIVE: The mechanism of acquired torsade-de-pointes arrhythmias (TdP) is not clear but is suggested to be based on several parameters including early afterdepolarizations (EADs) and/or dispersion of repolarization (delta APD). In our animal model of TdP (anaesthetized dogs with chronic AV block), we assessed the relevance of interventricular dispersion for the initiation of TdP. METHODS: In 24 experiments, multiple endocardial monophasic action potential (MAP) recordings were made at baseline, after d-sotalol (2 mg/kg), and after MgSO4 (100 mg/kg, n = 11) to measure regional differences i

Pharmacological identification of delta and mu opiate receptors on bulbar respiratory neurons.

The opiate receptors of central neurons related to the generation of the respiratory rhythm were identified using microiontophoresis of the synthetic opioid peptides DSLET (Tyr-D-Ser-Gly-Phe-Leu-Thr) and TRIMU-4 (Tyr-D-Ala-Gly-NH-CH (CH3)-CH2-CH(CH3)2), exhibiting a high selectivity for delta and mu receptors respectively. Both agonists induced depressions of spontaneous and L-glutamate-induced discharges; the effects were antagonized by naloxone and not mimicked by a related almost inactive peptide DSLLET (Tyr-D-Ser-Gly-Leu-Leu-Thr). The effect of DSLET had a faster time course than that of T

Intermittent ventricular pre-excitation in a dog with orthodromic reciprocating atrioventricular tachycardia.

A four-year-old female neutered Labrador retriever was referred for investigation of paroxysmal tachycardia. On physical examination, a heart rate of 220 beats/min with no heart murmurs was noticed. Cardiac troponin I was significantly increased. A six-lead electrocardiography revealed phases of narrow QRS complexes tachycardia with regular RR intervals and a QP'/P'Q of 0.80, compatible with orthodromic atrioventricular reciprocating tachycardia (OAVRT), alternating with sinus rhythm. On ambulatory electrocardiography, initial phases of OAVRT were followed by sinus rhythm. The sinus beats were

Atrial fibrillation in the Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome: ECG recognition and treatment in the ED.

Estimated to occur in 0.1% to 0.3% of the population, Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome (WPW) is a condition where atrial impulses bypass the atrioventricular node and activate the ventricular myocardium directly via an accessory pathway. Clinical clues to the diagnosis include a young patient with previous episodes of palpitations, rapid heart rate, or syncope. Although several different rhythm presentations are possible, atrial fibrillation is a not infrequent dysrhythmia seen in the WPW patient. Electrocardiographic features suggestive of WPW atrial fibrillation include irregularity of the rhy

Exploring delta/alpha and theta/alpha ratios as longitudinal treatment-response biomarkers in post-stroke rehabilitation.

INTRODUCTION: Post-stroke motor recovery relies on rebalancing of network connectivity, yet objective biomarkers for longitudinal monitoring remain limited. The delta/alpha ratio (DAR) is an established quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) index of pathological slow-wave activity associated with stroke outcomes; the theta/alpha ratio (TAR) is a related but less-established measure. In this exploratory analysis, we investigated whether these biomarkers can serve as longitudinal treatment-response markers during neurorehabilitation, using electromagnetic network targeting field (ENTF) stim

Quantified electroencephalographic changes in depressed patients with and without dementia.

We carried out quantified electroencephalograms (qEEG) in 17 patients with probable Alzheimer's disease (AD), who also met the DSM-III-R criteria for either dysthymia or major depression, and 18 AD patients with comparable intellectual impairment but no depression, 13 patients with depression but no AD, and 10 age-matched normal controls. There was a significant effect for depression in alpha relative power: depressed patients (with or without AD) showed a significantly lower alpha relative power in the right posterior region as compared to nondepressed patients; however, this change was obser

Effects of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors and memantine on resting-state electroencephalographic rhythms in Alzheimer's disease patients.

Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AChEIs) are the most widely used symptomatic treatment for mild to severe Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients, while N-methyl-d-aspartic acid (NMDA) receptor antagonist memantine is licensed for use in moderate to severe AD patients. In this article, the effect of these compounds on resting state eyes-closed electroencephalographic (EEG) rhythms in AD patients is reviewed to form a knowledge platform for the European Innovative Medicine Initiative project "PharmaCog" (IMI Grant Agreement No. 115009) aimed at developing innovative translational models for drug tes

GABAA receptor β1 -subunit knock-out mice show increased delta power in NREM sleep and decreased theta power in REM sleep.

γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) acting through heteropentameric GABAA receptors plays a pivotal role in the sleep-promoting circuitry. Whereas the role of the different GABAA receptor α-subunits in sleep regulation and in mediating the effect of benzodiazepines for treatment of insomnia is well-described, the β-subunits are less studied. Here we report the first study characterizing sleep in mice lacking the GABAA receptor β1 -subunit (β1-/- mice). We show that β1-/- mice have a distinct and abnormal sleep phenotype characterized by increased delta power in non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep and d

Different Abnormalities of Cortical Neural Synchronization Mechanisms in Patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment due to Alzheimer's and Chronic Kidney Diseases: An EEG Study.

This study tested whether resting state alpha rhythms (8-13 Hz) may characterize mild cognitive impairment due to Alzheimer's disease (ADMCI) compared with MCI due to chronic kidney disease (CKDMCI). Clinical and resting state eyes-closed electroencephalographic (rsEEG) rhythms from 40 ADMCI, 29 CKDMCI, and 45 cognitively normal elderly (Nold) subjects were available in a national archive. Age, gender, and education were matched in the three groups, and Mini-Mental State Evaluation (MMSE) score was paired in the ADMCI and CKDMCI groups. Delta (<4 Hz), theta (4-8 Hz), alpha 1 (8-10.5 Hz), alpha

Relative Alpha Variability Changes Precede Alpha-Delta Ratio Changes in Cerebral Ischemia.

The utility of quantitative EEG in early detection of cerebral ischemia is still underappreciated in clinical practice. We present a case of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage complicated by vasospasm as detected by the cerebral angiogram. The patient was being monitored on electroencephalogram. It showed early signs of cerebral ischemia represented by decline in the Alpha-Delta-Ratio (ADR) and the Relative-Alpha-Variability (RAV). Surprisingly, the RAV changes preceded the ADR changes. This is a significant finding that can also apply to early reocclusion or reperfusion injuries after mechani

Dimensions of anxiety and depression and neurophysiological indicators of error-monitoring: Relationship with delta and theta oscillatory power and error-related negativity amplitude.

Error-monitoring processes may be affected by transdiagnostic dimensions of psychopathology symptoms including trait anxiety, worry, and severity of depressive symptoms. We tested the relationship between continuous measures of anxiety and depressive symptomology and neural correlates of error-monitoring as measured by time-frequency domain delta and theta oscillatory power and time-domain error-related negativity (ERN) amplitude extracted from the electroencephalogram (EEG). Secondary analyses tested for diagnostic group differences in error-related neural responses in individuals with genera

Frontal delta-beta cross-frequency coupling in high and low social anxiety: An index of stress regulation?

Cross-frequency coupling (CFC) between frontal delta (1-4 Hz) and beta (14-30 Hz) oscillations has been suggested as a candidate neural correlate of social anxiety disorder, a disorder characterized by fear and avoidance of social and performance situations. Prior studies have used amplitude-amplitude correlation (AAC) as a CFC measure and hypothesized it as a candidate neural mechanism of affective control. However, using this metric has yielded inconsistent results regarding the direction of CFC, and the functional significance of coupling strength is uncertain. To offer a better understandi

The rhythm of retinoids in the brain.

The retinoids are a family of compounds that in nature are derived from vitamin A or pro-vitamin A carotenoids. An essential part of the diet for mammals, vitamin A has long been known to be essential for many organ systems in the adult. More recently, however, they have been shown to be necessary for function of the brain and new discoveries point to a central role in processes ranging from neuroplasticity to neurogenesis. Acting in several regions of the central nervous system including the eye, hippocampus and hypothalamus, one common factor in its action is control of biological rhythms. T

Personalized beta band HD-tACS over the left SMA improves speech and limb movement by modulating prefrontal delta oscillations in neurotypical young adults.

Objective. The supplementary motor area (SMA) demonstrates abnormal beta activity (13-30 Hz) during speech and limb movement tasks in neurological conditions such as Parkinson's disease (PD). Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) has demonstrated promising improvement in motor and non-motor functions by entraining endogenous neural oscillations. We conducted an exploratory study on the modulatory effects of personalized beta high-definition (HD)-tACS over the left SMA on speech production and limb movement.Approach.In a repeated-measures experiment, twenty-two neurotypical young

Region-specific adenosinergic modulation of the slow-cortical rhythm in urethane-anesthetized rats.

Slow cortical rhythm (SCR) is a rhythmic alternation of UP and DOWN states during sleep and anesthesia. SCR-associated slow waves reflect homeostatic sleep functions. Adenosine accumulating during prolonged wakefulness and sleep deprivation (SD) may play a role in the delta power increment during recovery sleep. NREM sleep is a local, use-dependent process of the brain. In the present study, direct effect of adenosine on UP and DOWN states was tested by topical application to frontal, somatosensory and visual cortices, respectively, in urethane-anesthetized rats. Local field potentials (LFPs)
