This report describes a case of primary hyperparathyroidism in a 68-year-old man. The endocrine disorder, while suspected before the commission of homicide and attempted murder, was proven biochemically and histologically a number of months after the commission of the crimes. The acts of homicide and attempted murder followed the development of paranoid delusions, which rapidly resolved upon successful removal of a single cystic parathyroid gland adenoma. The unusual events that immediately followed the acts of violence indicate that the delusions occurred in a clear sensorium (absence of deli

The 83-year-old woman in this case report developed paranoid delusions and auditory hallucinations in association with toxic serum levels of digoxin, while remaining alert, unagitated, and coherent in thinking. No cardiovascular or metabolic abnormalities were discovered to account for her psychiatric symptoms. Her mental status rapidly returned to normal as serum digoxin declined to therapeutic levels.

BACKGROUND: About one hundred years prior to Capgras' description of the eponymous misidentification psychosis, this clinical picture had already been described by Schroeder van der Kolk. To this day, this publication has received unjustly little attention.
AIM: To highlight Schroeder van der Kolk's case report and to bridge past and present, with emphasis on psychiatric care.
METHOD: Analysis of the original case history alongside Capgras' three publications and presentation of a modernized adaptation.
RESULTS: The pathogenetic factors emphasized by Capgras - alienation, heightened affecti

UNLABELLED: Multiple genes within the DISC1 (Disrupted-in-Schizophrenia-1) interactome have been implicated in psychotic disorders, which are characterized by hallucinations, delusions, negative symptoms, and disorganized behavior. However, the genetic associations of specific psychotic symptoms remain poorly understood.
METHODS: We conducted a genetic association analysis of the DISC1 interactome for hallucinations and delusions in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, using single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), gene, and gene-set approaches.
RESULTS: Our findings showed an association betwee

Abnormal development of the external and internal genital organs and male pseudohermaphrodite-type disorders of sex development is one of the conditions that creates problem in determination of gender. In this case report, our aim is to discuss how disorders with psychotic symptoms may affect different cultural life styles, circumstances, experience, delusion contents of identification and acceptance in a patient diagnosed with bipolar affective disorder, and with male-pseudohermaphroditism during adulthood.

The notion of 'bizarre delusion' has come into question in contemporary anglophone psychopathology. In DSM-5, it no longer serves as a special criterion for diagnosing schizophrenia nor as an exclusion criterion for delusional disorder. Empirical studies influencing this development have, however, been relatively sparse and subject to methodological criticism. Major reviews have concluded that current conceptualizations of bizarre delusions may require rethinking and refinement. Defining bizarreness entails a return to Jaspers, whose influential views on the supposed incomprehensibility of biz

BACKGROUND: Delusions can complicate practically all brain disorders. They may be dramatic and bizarre. An example is the so-called delusion of pregnancy.
OBJECTIVE: To identify the characteristic of a psychotic symptom, the phenomenon of delusion of pregnancy, in the context of dementia.
METHOD: MEDLINE and Google Scholar searches were conducted for relevant articles, chapters, and books published before 2014. Search terms used included delusion of pregnancy, uncommon presentation, behavioral and psychological symptoms, dementia, Alzheimer's disease, and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Publi

The aim of the study was to examine the dimensions of hallucinations and delusions in affective (manic episode, bipolar affective disorder, and depressive episode) and nonaffective disorders (schizophrenia, acute and transient psychotic disorders, and unspecified psychosis). Sixty outpatients divided equally into two groups comprising affective and nonaffective disorders were taken up for evaluation after screening, as per inclusion and exclusion criteria. Scores of 3 or above on delusion and hallucinatory behavior subscales of positive and negative syndrome scale were sufficient to warrant ra

Although a role for right hemisphere dysfunction has been hypothesized in Cotard delusion, it remains unclear which functions are disturbed. We report here the first known patient with unilateral right hemisphere lesions and delusions of death (1 of the 2 types of Cotard delusion). This man began to believe that he was dead after suffering a right hemisphere infarction involving the frontal, temporal, and parietal lobes, as well as the thalamus. He had delusions of death in the context of both depersonalization/derealization and delusional misidentifications of people and places. Neuropsycholo

In 1951, entomologist Jay Traver published in the Proceedings of the Entomological Society of Washington her personal experiences with a mite infestation of her scalp that resisted all treatment and was undetectable to anyone other than herself. Traver is recognized as having suffered from Delusory Parasitosis: her paper shows her to be a textbook case of the condition. The Traver paper is unique in the scientific literature in that its conclusions may be based on data that was unconsciously fabricated by the author's mind. The paper may merit retraction on the grounds of error or even scienti

Delusions and their relation with temperament and character in psychotic patients. Recent studies have investigated the relationship between personality traits and symptomatology in schizophrenia. The aim of this study is to investigate whether Cloninger's dimensional personality traits are related to psychotic delusional symptomatology. In the study, we include a sample of 105 patients with DSM-IV diagnosis of schizophrenia or another psychotic disorder. Delusions were evaluated by the SCAN interview. Our results suggest that some personality traits may contribute to heterogeneity in the pres

We report a 53-year-old male patient with late onset mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes(MELAS) with hallucination and delusion. The patient manifested various neurological symptoms including perceptive deafness, muscle weakness of limbs with loss of consciousness, sensory abnormalities in hands, feet and a face, abnormal sense of taste, tremor, palsy of upward eye movement and weak deep tendon reflexes prior to the psychotic episode. He was diagnosed as MELAS, because of high serum lactic acid and pyruvic acid, and the point mutation in the mitocho

In the Capgras syndrome (CS) there is a natural dissociation between recognition and identification and it deserves to be designated as an agnosia of identification. Joseph Capgras who first introduced this concept of agnosia, also suggested that the syndrome might be studied within the framework of 'méconnaissance systématique' (translated here as systématic unawareness), thus anticipating a type of interpretation in which the basis of CS (and other delusional misidentification syndromes) would be a lack of corporeal and/or egocentric space awareness. From two examples, it is suggested that t

Tuberculosis being endemic in country like India can affect any organ though pulmonary tuberculosis is rampant and extrapulmonary is rare. Tuberculosis affecting parotid gland is a rare occurrence, usually unilateral. However, Mycobacterium tuberculosis causing cold abscess in bilateral parotid glands is even rarer. Here, we present a case of a young female presented with bilateral slow-growing swelling in the parotid region with evening raise of temperature for two months. On clinical examination, no signs of inflammation were seen. Ultrasonography showed thick-walled hypoechoic collection wi

Delusion of pregnancy is defined as a persistent belief that one is pregnant despite concrete evidence to the contrary. Despite being reported as an isolated event, delusion of pregnancy has been reported in many patients with underlying psychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, psychotic depression, and other physiological disorders of mental function. This case study reports a case of a 44-year-old, drug-naïve female with delusion of pregnancy affected by paranoid schizophrenia. Pharmacological treatments are frequently insufficient in controlling this condition and are

BACKGROUND: The 3 core domains of delirium (cognitive, higher level thinking, circadian) do not include the less common noncore psychotic symptoms. However, psychosis might inform about perturbations of neural circuitry, outcomes, or suggest tailored clinical management.
OBJECTIVE: We assessed relationships between psychosis and other characteristics of delirium in patients without dementia or antipsychotics treatment.
METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis of 366 adults with delirium per the Delirium Rating Scale Revised-98, whose items distinguish hallucinations and delusions from other types o

Injustice, breach of trust, and humiliation are social stressors which can result in embitterment, known to everybody and which has been described in the Bible (Cain and Abel) or by Aristotle in the Nicomachean Ethics. It has been discussed by several authors since the early days of psychiatric classification. In the textbook 'Psychiatry' by E. Kraepelin a full chapter is devoted to 'querulant delusion', named a reactive psychosis, which can be discriminated from endogenous psychosis or personality disorders. Core symptoms are embitterment, negativism, helplessness, self blame, unspecific soma

GOAL: The aim of the study was to investigate delusions of poisoning in people with paranoid schizophrenia. Specifically, how often delusions of poisoning occur, how the delusional content is represented and to what extent women and men differ in delusions of poisoning were analysed.
METHODS & SAMPLE: Data were collected retrospectively from two psychiatric wards in Germany. Base material comprised the medical records of all persons receiving inpatient treatment due to their paranoid schizophrenia between 2010 and 2014 in one of the two psychiatric wards. The sample consisted of 156 people (9
