OBJECTIVE: The WHO describes violence as a global public health problem. In contrast to domestic violence, violence against youth has been little explored. Our aims were to investigate the prevalence and gender differences in relation to emotional, physical and sexual abuse among young men and women attending youth health centers in Sweden, the current adverse effects of the abuse and the perpetrators of the abuse.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
SETTING: Nationally representative youth health centers in Sweden.
POPULATION AND METHODS: In total, 2,250 women and 920 men aged 15-23 years answe

Boston University (BU) has a long history of a strong social mission and commitment to service. In August 2003, BU made an institutional commitment to work with the country of Lesotho to tackle the human capital implications of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Surrounded by South Africa, and with a population of two million, Lesotho, a stable democracy, suffers the world's third-highest adult HIV prevalence rate of about 24%. The initiation of the program required a substantial initial institutional investment without any promise of payback. This allowed BU to begin work in Lesotho while searching for a

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Social isolation is an urgent public health concern, especially for older immigrants who face heightened barriers to social participation due to disability, structural health inequities, and limited access to culturally and linguistically appropriate services. This study presents a programmatic model that explains how social connection and sustained participation can be fostered through accessible, culturally responsive, and participatory design.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This community-engaged case study examines a national virtual program serving Spanish-speaki

Men who have sex with men (MSM) continue to experience severe health disparities despite advancements in biomedical prevention strategies such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and harm reduction initiatives. Systemic stigma, health care inequities, and structural neglect contribute to disproportionately high rates of HIV, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), substance use, and mental health challenges among MSM. The rise of authoritarian political movements in the United States exacerbates these disparities by restricting LGBTQIA+ health care access, defunding HIV prevention programs, and

PURPOSE: Characterizations of the magnitude of the correlations between adolescent risk behaviors vary considerably. This study documented correlations between selected risk behaviors (smoking, alcohol use, cannabis use, physical fighting, sexual intercourse, and suicide ideation/attempt) among youth aged 13 to 15 in 125 countries. Country-level indicators such as wealth, income inequality, health and education expenditures, and level of democracy were analyzed to explore predictors of correlation magnitude across countries.
METHODS: Data on adolescent risk behaviors were analyzed from the Gl

Impersonal cooperation among strangers enables societies to create valuable public goods, such as infrastructure, public services, and democracy. Several factors have been proposed to explain variation in impersonal cooperation across societies, referring to institutions (e.g., rule of law), religion (e.g., belief in God as a third-party punisher), cultural beliefs (e.g., trust) and values (e.g., collectivism), and ecology (e.g., relational mobility). We tested 17 preregistered hypotheses in a meta-analysis of 1,506 studies of impersonal cooperation in social dilemmas (e.g., the Public Goods G

BACKGROUND: The Flint water crisis (FWC) was a public health tragedy caused by crumbling infrastructure, subverted democracy, and indifference toward a predominantly poor and Black community that resulted in lead-in-water exposure, Legionnaires' disease, and emotional and health-related trauma. Through the cooperation of community partners, the Flint Registry (FR) was conceived to track long-term health and improve public health via service connections.
OBJECTIVES: This study sought to share the FR's community-partnered, multi-tiered engagement strategy and determine the efficacy of this stra

In the U.S., the 1996 federal law banning medically unnecessary female genital cutting (FGC) of minors was rendered unconstitutional in 2018 in the Nagarwala case. This paper highlights legal developments at the federal and state levels in the U.S. since this trial. It looks at anti-FGC frameworks in other Western countries such as Australia, the UK, France, and Switzerland for comparison. The Australia High Court ruled in favor of a broader interpretation of the words "mutilate" (as in "female genital mutilation" or FGM) and "clitoris" in 2019. In the UK in 2019, a mother of a three-year-old

An alarming rise in youth ill-being is sweeping across many parts of the world. In Norway, surveys conducted since 1985 consistently identified young people as the happiest age group, while seniors ranked lowest in terms of well-being. Since the early 2010s, however, this pattern has reversed: happiness among seniors has increased, whereas the well-being of young people has declined sharply. Quantitative research attributes this shift to strained social relationships, mental health challenges, and growing anxiety about the future. Social media appears to exacerbate these difficulties, though i

The COVID-19 pandemic was an 'extraordinary' situation that raised many ethical and political questions about the role of care in society, as well as the exercise of democracy in the context of major restrictions on freedoms. During the first lockdown in France, many people shared their daily experiences in 'lockdown diaries'. This can be explained by the psychological functions of narration which, among other things, allow people to break out of isolation by sharing their feelings and daily life. For this reason, we analysed pandemic-related narratives published online in France throughout th

This paper presents a novel theoretical framework integrating evolutionary biology, thermodynamics, and political science to explain how human political systems function as adaptive instruments for fulfilling basic biological requirements. While traditional political theory focuses on ideological, economic, or historical drivers, we argue that political structures are ultimately constrained by the fundamental thermodynamic imperative of living systems: maintaining a low-entropy internal state by maximizing energy income and minimizing metabolic expenditure. We trace a clear hierarchy of behavi

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to assess the health needs and priorities of older people in Kosovo, the newest state in Europe striving for a functional democracy after the breakdown of former Yugoslavia and the following war in the region.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Kosovo in 2011 including a nationwide representative sample of 1890 individuals aged ≥65 years (949 men, mean age: 73 ± 6 years; 941 women, mean age: 74 ± 7 years; overall response rate: 84%). All individuals were administered the full version of EASY-Care Standard 2010 instrument, inquiring about th

This paper discusses the economic, legal, moral, and political difficulties in developing drugs for the developing world. It argues that large, global pharmaceutical companies have social responsibilities to the developing world, and that they may exercise these responsibilities by investing in research and development related to diseases that affect developing nations, offering discounts on drug prices, and initiating drug giveaways. However, these social responsibilities are not absolute requirements and may be balanced against other obligations and commitments in light of economic, social,

Diabetic children should consume the number of calories normal for their age, with an ideal % nutrient distribution: +/- 55% carbohydrate (especially delayed-resorption carbohydrates), +/- 30% lipid and +/- 15% protein. In some countries e.g. Belgium, the excessive proportion of fat in the diet must be reduced. Calorie requirements may vary a lot from one day to the next, but nutrient fluctuations do not entail proportional changes in metabolic control, as long as insulin adaptation is adequate. It is essential that diabetic children adapt their food intake to their appetite; they do not have

INTRODUCTION: In relatively wealthy countries, substantial between-country variability in COVID-19 vaccination coverage occurred. We aimed to identify influential national-level determinants of COVID-19 vaccine uptake at different COVID-19 pandemic stages in such countries.
METHODS: We considered over 50 macro-level demographic, healthcare resource, disease burden, political, socio-economic, labor, cultural, life-style indicators as explanatory factors and coverage with at least one dose by June 2021, completed initial vaccination protocols by December 2021, and booster doses by June 2022 as

OBJECTIVES: In recent years, increased anti-immigrant hostility has trickled into school settings creating toxic climates for immigrant-origin (I-O) students (Rogers, School and society in the age of trump, 2019, UCLA's Institute for Democracy, Education, and Access). Through youth participatory action research (yPAR), this study qualitatively examined how a class of Emerging Bilingual (EB) students aimed to promote more inclusive learning environments by designing, implementing, and evaluating a school-wide program. Here, we consider how the students experienced growth in their civic developm

This Article examines Americans' enduring demand for freedom of therapeutic choice as a popular constitutional movement originating in the United States' early years. In exploring extrajudicial advocacy for therapeutic choice between the American Revolution and the Civil War, this piece illustrates how multiple concepts of freedom in addition to bodily freedom bolstered the concept of a constitutional right to medical liberty. There is a deep current of belief in the United States that people have a right to choose their preferred treatments without government interference. Modern American his

Public policy in Canada develops through deliberative democracy and, increasingly, public engagement. Children and youth ('young people') remain largely excluded from these processes however; this exclusion is especially evident in health arenas where two conceptual tools, autonomy and agency, are used to justify it. To date, there has not yet been an examination of how these concepts function in children's palliative and end-of-life (P-EOL) care. This narrative review aimed to explore how autonomy and agency are constructed, conveyed, and employed in related literature. To situate and compare

Corruption, a global phenomenon, affects countries worldwide, transcending geographic and political boundaries, and continues to escalate, partly due to the inefficiency of financial and legal institutions and lack of enforcement. This has significant implications for Africa, hindering democracy, development, and poverty alleviation efforts. Defined as the intentional misuse of official authority for personal benefit, corruption is often fueled by public sector financial managers or accounting officers embezzling funds. The increasing pressure on these officers to justify public fund usage, co
