Persistent Hepatitis E virus infection across England and Wales 2009-2017: Demography, virology and outcomes.

The first clinical case of persistent HEV infection in England was reported in 2009. We describe the demography, virology and outcomes of patients identified with persistent HEV infection in England and Wales between 2009 and 2017. A series of 94 patients with persistent HEV infection, defined by HEV viraemia of more than 12 weeks, was identified through routine reference laboratory testing. Virology, serology and clinical data were recorded through an approved PHE Enhanced Surveillance System. Sixty-six cases (70.2%) were transplant recipients, 16 (17.0%) had an underlying haematological mali

Morphological human bone features and demography controlling damage accumulation and fracture: a finite element study.

Prediction of bone fracture risk is clinically challenging. Computational modeling plays a vital role in understanding bone structure and diagnosing bone diseases, leading to novel therapies. The research objectives were to demonstrate the anisotropic structure of the bone at the micro-level taking into consideration the density and subject demography, such as age, gender, body mass index (BMI), height, weight, and their roles in damage accumulation. Out of 438 developed 3D bone models at the micro-level, 46.12% were female. The age distribution ranged from 23 to 95 years. The research unfolds

Advancing Theory Underlying Diversity-Disease Relationships: Competence in the Context of Life History, Demography, and Disease.

Biodiversity loss can increase parasite transmission via the dilution effect when two criteria are met. First, if communities consist of hosts that span a gradient of competence, from highly competent species that amplify transmission to low-competence species that decrease transmission. Second, if biodiversity loss is non-random, such that low-diversity communities possess a disproportionately high number of highly competent hosts. Infection is then predicted to spread more efficiently in low-diversity (high competence) communities. These criteria offer a compelling direct connection between

Climate, demography, immunology, and virology combine to drive two decades of dengue virus dynamics in Cambodia.

The incidence of dengue virus disease has increased globally across the past half-century, with highest number of cases ever reported in 2019 and again in 2023. We analyzed climatological, epidemiological, and phylogenomic data to investigate drivers of two decades of dengue in Cambodia, an understudied endemic setting. Using epidemiological models fit to a 19-y dataset, we first demonstrate that climate-driven transmission alone is insufficient to explain three epidemics across the time series. We then use wavelet decomposition to highlight enhanced annual and multiannual synchronicity in den

System dynamics modelling approach to explore the effect of dog demography on rabies vaccination coverage in Africa.

BACKGROUND: Dogs are important reservoirs of rabies, a zoonotic viral encephalitis that kills thousands of people in Asia and Africa annually. Mass dog vaccination is recommended for the prevention of rabies in both humans and dogs. Mass vaccinations should be conducted annually but more frequent campaigns may be required in areas with high dog turnover rates. Consequently, a good understanding of dog demography is essential for the control of the disease. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of dog demography on rabies vaccination coverage following a mass vaccination campaign with

Demography of dialysis and transplantation in Europe, 1984. Report from the European Dialysis and Transplant Association Registry.

The demography of renal replacement therapy up until the close of 1984 in Europe is presented, based on return of individual patient questionnaires to the EDTA Registry. These were completed by 84.7% of known centres in 33 countries. Of 187,267 individually registered patients, 102,276 were known to be alive on defined forms of renal replacement therapy on 31 December 1984. The stock of patients alive on treatment by dialysis and transplantation in Europe continued to grow and exceeded 200 per million population in 14 European countries at the end of 1984. During the same year, 21,198 new pati

Dietary enrichment of Tyrophagus putrescentiae improves Amblyseius swirskii rearing efficiency: linking prey biochemistry to predator demography.

Optimizing nutrient transfer across trophic levels has become an important approach to enhance the biological efficiency and sustainability of predator-prey rearing systems supporting augmentative biological control. This study examined how dietary enrichment of the factitious prey Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Schrank) influences its biochemical composition and subsequent effects on the demographic performance of the predatory mite Amblyseius swirskii Athias-Henriot; one of the most widely used biocontrol agents in protected crops. Eight dry diets were tested, including a basal mixture (Diet 1: w

Do personality characteristics predict future alcohol problems after considering current demography, substance use, and alcohol response?

BACKGROUND: Several personality traits predict future alcohol problems but also relate to demographic and substance-related variables that themselves correlate with later adverse alcohol outcomes. Few prospective studies have evaluated whether personality measures predict alcohol problems after considering current demographic and substance-related variables. METHODS: Data from 414 drinkers without alcohol use disorder (AUD) from the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism (average age 20, 44% male) were followed over an average of 9 years. Time 1 (baseline) demography, AUD family hi

Demography of the black grouper, Mycteroperca bonaci (Poey, 1860) (Teleostei: Epinephelidae) from the North Brazil Shelf.

Mycteroperca bonaci (black grouper) is one of the most sought species of grouper along its entire distribution, being a prime target for demersal line fisheries because of its high commercial value. Nonetheless, because of population declines the species is considered near threatened according to the IUCN red list. The present study aimed to determine the population parameters of M. bonaci, including growth, reproduction and mortality, and thus contributes to measures towards its conservation and management in the southwestern Atlantic. The sampling area is in the North Brazil Shelf, off Maran

Sublethal effects of matrine and neemarin on the demography of Habrobracon hebetor developing on treated Helicoverpa armigera larvae.

Integrated pest management (IPM) relies on the compatibility of multiple control strategies. In controlling Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) with the braconid parasitoid Habrobracon hebetor (Say), evaluating insecticide efficacy and compatibility is essential. Botanical insecticides may provide a safer alternative to synthetic chemicals due to reduced non-target effects. This study investigated the effects of sublethal concentrations of matrine and neemarin ingested by H. armigera larvae on H. hebetor developing on them, to assess their compatibility for potential integration into IPM programs. Divergent age-related changes in parasite infection occur independently of behaviour and demography in a wild ungulate.

As animals age, they exhibit a suite of phenotypic changes, often including reductions in movement and social behaviour ('behavioural ageing'). By altering an individual's exposure to parasites, behavioural ageing may influence infection status trajectories over the lifespan. However, these processes could be confounded by age-related changes in other phenotypic traits, or by selective disappearance of certain individuals owing to parasite-induced mortality. Here, we uncover contrasting age-related patterns of infection across three helminth parasites in wild adult female red deer (Cervus elap
