Interim Implant-Supported Resection Prosthesis Following Fibula Free Flap Reconstruction of the Arch with Immediate Implants: A Novel Approach for the Oncologic Patient.

Oral cancer treatment involving the maxilla and/or mandible often results in esthetic and functional deficits that can diminish the patient's quality of life. As a result, expeditious reconstruction of the defect and dental rehabilitation is desirable. Dental rehabilitation shortly after reconstruction with an osteocutaneous free flap and resection prosthesis is a persistent challenge for patients with oncologic defects where immediate dental rehabilitation is not a possibility. Additionally, conventional prosthesis fabrication techniques are impractical or impossible due to postoperative anat

A study on the artifacts generated by dental materials in PET/CT image.

PET/CT system reduces the scanning time and provides an anatomical image because it realizes a CT-based attenuation corrected image without using an isotope, such as 68 Ge or 137Cs, in the attenuation correcting method due to the recent technological development. On the other hand, artifacts are generated in a CT image by dental materials, which affect the attenuation corrected PET image. Against this backdrop, this study performed a clinical experiment and a phantom experiment. The clinical experiment targeted 40 patients without oral disease, including 20 patients who had metal prosthesis in

Acute appendicitis, foreign bodies and COVID-19 vaccination: correspondence.

We would like to comment on the publication "Uncommon causes of acute appendicitis: foreign bodies in the cecal appendix." Rodríguez Lucas et al. presented a COVID-19 recipient who presented with acute appendicitis and surgical exploration detected dental prosthesis. The foreign body might be the cause of acute appendicitis. Dental protsthesis is a possible problematic foreign body that might be trapped in appendix. The history of dental prosthesis loss might be a useful clue for this specific clinical situation.

Association of poor dental status with eating alone: A cross-sectional Japan gerontological evaluation study among independent older adults.

Eating alone is reported to deteriorate health; however, the relationship between eating alone and poor dental health remains unclear. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the association between poor dental health and eating alone. Data of participants (n = 156,287) aged ≥65 years from the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study were evaluated using logistic regression to estimate adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association between dental status, including prosthesis use, and eating status. Differences in these associations according to living st

Long-Term Success in Dental Implant Revisions: A 31-Year Case Study of Alveolar Atrophy Management in an Elderly Woman.

BACKGROUND In the early 1980s, Brånemark described the use of cylindrical titanium dental implants integrated with bone. Since then, significant advances in dental implant technology have resulted in improved function and cosmetic appearance. This report describes an 87-year-old woman with a 31-year history of revision implant dentistry, initially for severe alveolar atrophy of the premolar and upper molar teeth. CASE REPORT In 1992, a severe alveolar atrophy of the upper premolar and molar areas was treated with the insertion of 4 fixtures in the frontal sector and a prosthesis superimposed a

Superimposition of intraoral scans of an edentulous arch with implants and implant-supported provisional restoration, implementing a novel implant prosthetic scan body.

Purpose To describe a technique utilizing a novel prosthetic scan body, that assists the accurate merging of multiple scans (intra- and extraoral) of the interim prosthesis and edentulous arch with dental implants, during rehabilitation with a fixed implant-supported prosthesis. Methods Intraoral scanning (Trios 3, 3Shape) of an interim implant-supported prosthesis was performed, subsequently followed by another scan, using five scan bodies, placed onto the implant abutments (SRA, Bone level, Straumann AG). Successively, the newly designed prosthetic scan bodies were attached to the abutment co

Finite element analysis of an implant-assisted removable partial denture during bilateral loading: occlusal rests position.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: When implants are incorporated into an existing partial removable dental prosthesis, the acrylic resin base can fracture. It is therefore essential to study the mechanical behavior of partial removable dental prostheses by using stress and deformation analysis. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of the occlusal rest position on the implant-assisted partial removable dental prosthesis by finite element analysis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A Faro Arm scan was used to extract the geometrical data of a human partially edentulous mandible. A standard plu

Oral health and happiness after 3-years with causal mediation of oral functions.

OBJECTIVES: The longitudinal association between oral health and self-reported happiness among older population and its mediating pathways were unknown. This study investigated the aforementioned association and the role of three oral functions (having difficulty in speaking, problems in smiling and difficulty in chewing) as causal mediating pathways. METHODS: In this 3-year cohort study, the 2016-2019 panel data on 65 years or older independent participants from Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study (JAGES) was used (N = 53,863). Poisson regression was used to calculate risk ratio (RR) of de

Is Alveolar Ridge Split a Risk Factor for Implant Survival?

PURPOSE: There is a paucity of studies that have assessed the long-term outcomes of the alveolar ridge split (ARS). This study evaluated the intraoperative and postoperative complications and assessed the placed dental implant and prosthesis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study of the ARS was conducted in a single private dental clinic. The predictor variable was the ARS technique (1 stage vs 2 stages). The primary outcome was the dental implant survival rate. Secondary outcomes were intraoperative complications, marginal bone loss, prosthetic complications, and prosthesis success ra

[Prosthetic rehabilitation of an epilepsy patient with dental implants. Case report].

According to epidemiologic data patients with epilepsy generally have more caries, more missing teeth and worse periodontal status than the normal population. Epilepsy patients have a great risk of injury during their seizures or aspiration of foreign bodies such as removable dental prosthesis or fragments of prosthesis. Fixed dental replacements are therefore recommended to reduce this risk. In cases where the anatomic restrictions enable only a conventional removable prosthesis, an implant prosthetic treatment offers helpful alternative for the epileptic patient. The implant prosthetic treat

Transposition of the mental nerve by piezosurgery followed by postoperative neurosensory control: a case report.

Transposition of the mental nerve is a preprosthetic procedure that is effective for patients with hyperaesthesia caused by the effect of a dental prosthesis on the alveolar ridge. We present the case of a 74-year-old woman with pain and hyperaesthesia of the right inferior alveolar nerve caused by a dental prosthesis. Caudal transposition of the right mental nerve by piezosurgery resulted in postoperative neurosensory controls of the lower lip showing normal nerve function 2 months later.

Micro-costing of dental prosthetics in jaw reconstruction.

INTRODUCTION: Dental rehabilitation has a significant impact on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) for patients undergoing microvascular reconstruction of the jaw. Virtual surgical planning (VSP) and computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology allows for precise and timely delivery of an implant-retained dental prosthesis. This study characterizes the cost to produce a point of care (in-house) 3D-printed resin dental prostheses for patients undergoing osseous free flap reconstruction. METHODOLOGY: Implant-retained dental prostheses for patients undergoing o

Dentists' Preference toward Fixed Versus Removable Implant Prosthesis on Edentulous Jaws to Improve Quality of Life.

Implants that can be used in the prosthetic rehabilitation of full and partial edentulous patients are now frequently used due to advances in dentistry. The aim of the study is to find the prevalence of implant supported fixed vs. removable prosthesis and associated quality of life evaluation. A cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted in an institution, on randomly selected individuals. The study group consisted of adult patients who attended the outpatient Department of Prosthodontics from June 2019-March 2020. Eighty-six thousand (86,000) case sheets were evaluated and Chi-square te

Accidental aspiration in a patient with Parkinson's disease during implant-supported prosthesis construction: a case report.

This article reports on a case history of an elderly patient with Parkinson's disease (PD) who sought treatment at a private dental office. His chief complaint was "difficulty in eating due to an illfitting prosthesis." Laboratory tests and oral radiographs were made. The surgical placement of an implant was done and, subsequently, an implant-supported prosthesis was fitted for the patient. During the impression for the construction of the implant-supported prosthesis, the patient accidentally aspirated the implant screwdriver. The object was found in the lower right lobe of the bronchus, and

Foreign body aspiration during dental treatment under general anesthesia: A case report.

Foreign body aspiration in dental clinics is the most common cause of respiratory emergencies. There are no reports on foreign body aspiration during dental treatment under stable general anesthesia because the patient neither has voluntary movements nor reflex actions. This is a case report on the fall of a prosthesis in the larynx, which occurs rarely under general anesthesia. During the try-in procedure, the prosthesis slid from the surgeon's hand and entered the retromylohyoid space, and while searching for it, it passed down the larynx to the endotracheal tube balloon, leading to a danger

Application of a new scan body for face-driven fixed prosthetics.

OBJECTIVE: The current method of digitally designing dental prostheses mainly focuses on intra-oral soft and hard tissues, although the harmony of the facial soft tissue and the prosthesis is crucial, especially for esthetics. Here, we introduce a new method of digitally designing dental prostheses using a new device that generates a virtual patient and incorporates facial features into the prosthetic design. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A new extra-oral scan body for facial scanning was designed and developed. A definitive edentulous maxilla implant cast with four extra-oral scan bodies (regions:
