Dentigerous cysts are the most common bony lesions of the jaws in children. It is one of the most prevalent types of odontogenic cysts associated with an erupted or developing tooth, particularly the mandibular third molars; the other teeth that are commonly affected are, in order of frequency, the maxillary canines, the maxillary third molars and, rarely, the central incisor. Radiographically, the cyst appears as ovoid well-demarcated unilocular radiolucency with a sclerotic border. The present case report describes the surgical enucleation of a dentigerous cyst involving the permanent maxill

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Odontogenic cysts are the most common cysts of the jaws and are formed from the remnants of the odontogenic apparatus. Among these odontogenic cysts, radicular cysts (RCs) (about 60% of all diagnosed jaw cysts), dentigerous cysts (DCs) (16.6% of all jaw cysts) and odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) (11.2% of all developmental odontogenic cysts) are the most common. The behavior of any lesion is generally reflected by its growth potential. Growth potential is determined by measuring the cell proliferative activity. The cell proliferative activity is measured by various

PURPOSE: Ameloblastic fibroma (AF), an exceedingly rare benign mixed odontogenic tumor, scarcely occurs in the anterior region of the maxilla. This case report aims to delineate the formidable challenges faced during the early diagnosis of such cases, with the ultimate goal of averting missed diagnoses.
METHODS: A 6-year-old female patient presented with the delayed eruption of bilateral maxillary central incisors. As early as 2 years old, tooth 62 was found to be impacted, accompanied by a supernumerary tooth in the anterior maxilla upon X-ray examination at another facility. Currently, for

This paper reports on the development of a dentigerous cyst associated with a lower permanent incisor following intrusion of two lower primary incisors. The small root remnant of one of the traumatized primary incisors was associated with granulation tissue, while the second incisor was discolored and suspected of being non-vital. The associated permanent incisor and other adjacent incisors were apically and laterally dislocated from their natural site of eruption. The conservative treatment included extraction of the involved primary discolored incisor, as well as the root remnant, followed b

Intraosseous verrucous carcinoma (IOVC) arising from an odontogenic cyst is extremely rare. We report a case of intraosseous verrucous carcinoma in a 74-year-old male who presented with a left mandibular swelling with recurrent pus discharge from gingiva of tooth #35. Panoramic radiography revealed an impacted tooth #34 and a large well-defined, radiolucent lesion surrounding the crown of tooth #34. The clinical diagnosis was an infected dentigerous cyst. Surgical excision of the cyst together with extraction of tooth #34 was performed. Histopathological examination showed proliferation of hyp

Dentigerous cysts are the most common developmental cysts of the jaws and are associated with impacted teeth. Bilateral dentigerous cysts are rare and typically occur in association with a developmental syndrome. The occurrence of bilateral dentigerous cysts in the absence of a developmental syndrome is very rare. The purpose of this paper was to report on a nonsyndromic, 5-year-old boy who presented mandibular bilateral dentigerous cysts.

The dentigerous cyst is the second most common odontogenic. The prevalence rates ranging from 0.8% to 3.6% in the general population. It affects people especially at the second and third decade of life with a male predilection. It presents a preference for the mandibular region particularly for the second lower premolar. Surgical marsupialization or decompression are the most conservative treatment modalities as it prevents the risks of cyst removal as nerve injuries and preserves the unerupted tooth. Two clinical cases of two young patients presenting a dentigerous cyst involving impacted tee

AIM: To check the efficacy of decompression technique in children with dentigerous cysts.
BACKGROUND: Most commonly occurring odontogenic cysts in the oral cavity are radicular cysts and dentigerous cysts.1 According to Kramer, a cyst is defined as a pathological cavity having fluid, semi-fluid, or gaseous contents, which is not created by the accumulation of pus. A cyst which is lined by epithelium is known as a true cyst and that which is not lined by epithelium known as a pseudocyst.2 The dictionary meaning of dentigerous is "structures resembling teeth".3 A dentigerous cyst is found envel

OBJECTIVE: To report medical and surgical treatment in a patient with acute lymphoblastic leukemia type 1 who developed a dangerous cyst.
CLINICAL CASE: A male of 8 years with acute lymphoblastic leukemia type 1, whose treatment was in induction. In one month, the patient presented a facial asymmetry due to mandibular growth and acute pain, hyperthermia and malaise. In the examination, we identified lip parestesia, a second temporal molar treated with chromium steel and expansion involving the cortical of the lateral permanent incisive until the first permanent molar was identified. Since we

OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to assess the role of secretin-enhanced magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (S-MRCP) in the evaluation of patients following pancreatico-jejunal anatomosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: S-MRCP studies (n = 83) performed at Brigham and Women's Hospital between 1/2005 and 7/2005 were retrospectively reviewed. Among these, there were 13 patients (10 females, 3 males; mean age = 45 years, range = 18-74 years) who were evaluated with S-MRCP following pancreatojejunal anatomosis. Single-shot fast spin-echo T2-weighted thick slab dynamic MRCP images obtained bef

This case report describes an unusual odontogenic carcinoma, which was detected during routine periodontal examination. The lesion occurred in a dentigerous cyst associated with an impacted third molar in an otherwise asymptomatic 66-year-old male patient. The impacted tooth and lesion were excised based on evidence of radiographic change and clinical findings. An unusual histopathologic presentation is reported. The treatment provided for this tumor and the management of impacted teeth is reviewed.

BACKGROUND: Odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) is one of the common odontogenic cysts with aggressive clinical behavior and a high recurrence rate. Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a process, in which the epithelial cell loses its epithelial characteristics and acquires mesenchymal features. Since the evidence for the involvement of EMT in the development of OKC is still limited, the present study aimed to investigate the immunohistochemical expression of EMT-related proteins (E-cadherin and N-cadherin) in OKC and compare them to radicular cyst (RC) and dentigerous cyst (DC).

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to verify the density of mast cells (MCs) and microvessels in odontogenic cysts. Furthermore, the correlation between MCs and microvessels was evaluated to assess the contribution of MCs to angiogenesis and growth of odontogenic cysts. This approach may be a basis for the development of future pharmaceuticals addressed to MCs performance to manage odontogenic cysts. To our knowledge, no study investigating the correlation between MCs and microvessels has been performed to date.
METHODS: 60 cases of odontogenic cysts consisting of 20 radicular cysts (RCs), 20

INTRODUCTION: Mast cells are large granular cells that arise from multipotent CD 34+ precursors in the bone marrow normally distributed throughout the connective tissues. Following activation of immunologic or nonimmunologic stimuli, mast cells release secretory granules which give the characteristic metachromatic appearance with toluidine blue stain. Release of numerous mediators on degranulation of mast cells plays an important role in the pathogenesis of odontogenic cysts.
CONTEXT: Odontogenic cysts, such as dentigerous cysts, arise due to the accumulation of fluid between the crown of an

Dentigerous cysts are known as the second most common type of cyst in the jaws. The cyst is one of the lesions occurred frequently in the posterior body of the mandible and is often related to the unerupted third molar and forms around the crown of the unerupted tooth attaching at the cementoenamel junction. Such characteristic appearances are the diagnostic points differentiating from ameloblastoma or odontogenic keratocyst. However, it would be hard for us to diagnose it as a dentigerous cyst if the lesion does not show its typical appearance. We experienced two cases of dentigerous cysts wh

Dentigerous cysts are rarely reported in young children. They are usually asymptomatic and only identified when becoming significantly large. Treatment by enucleation may damage structures like the inferior alveolar nerve, maxillary sinus, or permanent teeth, thus reducing the child's quality of life. Therefore, conservative surgical treatment such as decompression is indicated. This case report describes the treatment and subsequent complete regression of an inflammatory dentigerous cyst based on the decompression method using a customized surgical tube in a 10-year-old girl. The innervation
