This study compares treatment assessments made by two groups of patients with Kennedy class I or class II mandibular edentulous conditions, who received either a removable partial denture (RPD) (N = 115) or one or two fixed partial dentures (FPDs), each supported distally by a blade implant (N = 113). Two questionnaires were administered, one at 16 weeks after the implant or RPD insertion and at the 6-month interval and the other at 18, 36, and 60 months. Marked functional improvements were perceived by a large majority of patients in both groups after the insertion of prosthesis. At 6 months,

Background: Tooth loss remains a major clinical challenge, affecting mastication, speech, facial aesthetics, and oral health-related quality of life. Prosthetic rehabilitation must therefore balance functional demands, biological limitations, patient preferences, maintenance capacity, and cost. Implant-assisted removable partial dentures (IARPDs) have emerged as a practical alternative to conventional removable partial dentures (RPDs) and full-arch fixed implant prostheses, particularly in distal-extension cases where conventional RPDs often demonstrate greater displacement and unfavorable str

BACKGROUND: Obesity is associated with periodontal disease, which compromises chewing by reducing masticatory efficiency. However, little is known about periodontal health and the use of removable prostheses in obese older adults.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of removable partial denture (RPD) insertion on periodontal condition, maximum bite force (MBF), and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in obese and normal-weight older adults.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Edentulous older adults in the maxilla and partially edentulous in the mandible were assigned to obese (71.9 ± 5.0 years; n

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate clasp-retained removable partial dentures (C-RPDs) with a metal framework for survival, maintenance requirements, and biologic implications.
METHOD AND MATERIALS: C-RPDs were retrospectively analyzed based on patient records. Treatment failure was defined as fracture of a framework component (metal base or connector) or loss of an abutment tooth. Other outcome variables included factors that might conceivably impact C-RPD survival (maxilla vs mandible, Kennedy classes, opposing dentitions, treatment by students vs certified dental practitioners), mobility and caries of

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Placing removable partial denture (RPD) rests on composite resin restorations has long been a debatable issue. Despite developments in composite resins such as nanotechnology and bulk-filling techniques, studies investigating the performance of composite resin restorations when used to support occlusal rests remain scarce.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the performance of bulk-fill versus incremental (conventional) nanocomposite resin restorations when they are used to support RPD rests under functional loading.

PURPOSE: This retrospective cohort study examined factors affecting the periodontal condition and survival of remaining teeth 5 years after removable partial denture (RPD) placement using multivariate analyses.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Of 231 patients who received RPDs at Tohoku University Hospital, 108 patients who had agreed to undergo a 5-year follow-up were examined. The outcomes of RPD treatment were assigned to one of three categories: successful (n = 58), remake (n = 36), and failure (n = 14). A total of 80 patients in the successful and remake groups were included in this study. The par

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Although internal porosity is a potential risk factor for clasp fracture, little is known about its frequency in the clasps of titanium removable partial dentures.
PURPOSE: This study investigated the influence of the direction of auxiliary sprues on porosity in the circumferential clasps of a pressure-cast titanium removable partial denture.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Wax patterns of a removable partial denture framework were made on 10 identical refractory casts of a Kennedy class II, modification 1, mandibular partially edentulous arch. For the auxiliary sprues directed t

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the periodontal conditions following treatment with distally extending cantilever bridges or removable partial dentures (RPDs) in elderly patients. All participants had a complete denture in the maxilla and moderate-to-advanced bone loss around the teeth present in the mandible. After undergoing periodontal treatment, 27 patients were treated with distally extending cantilever bridges and 25 patients with a RPD. During the first 2 years following prosthetic treatment, the patients were recalled twice a year and during the last 3 years once a year fo

Five Veterans Administration centers have participated in a study to determine whether fixed partial dentures (FPDs) supported by blade implants offer an acceptable substitute for mandibular unilateral or bilateral distal-base extension removable partial dentures (RPDs). The study design and methodology have been described in Part I. A total of 232 patients received comprehensive dental care including RPDs for 118 patients and FPDs for 114. Prespecified criteria determined treatment failures. During the 60-month period, treatment failures occurred in 19 FPD patients and 30 RPD patients. Ten FP

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the mid-term clinical performance of short implants as strategic support for mandibular removable partial dentures (RPDs) with free-end situations.
METHODS: Subjects wearing lower RPDs in Kennedy Class I situations received two supporting posterior implants. After the healing phase, all participants received ball abutments. The clinical data recorded at implantation and 36 months included probing depth, bleeding on probing, presence of plaque, and a radiological evaluation. For descriptive analyses, mean values and standard deviations (SD) were calculate

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between objective masticatory function with respect to masticatory performance and food mixing ability, patients' perception of chewing ability and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). Partially dentate patients with removable partial dentures (n = 131, mean age 67·1 year) participated in the study. Four tests were performed to evaluate objective and subjective masticatory function and OHRQoL. Masticatory performance and food mixing ability were assessed using peanuts or a two-coloured wax cube as test items. Patients' percept

BACKGROUND: Conventional removable partial dentures (RPDs) involve a process that is often susceptible to errors and demands a significant investment of time. The introduction of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology and materials witnessed significant advancements in recent years to produce accurate removable partial dentures. This study evaluated the retention and wear of PolyEtherKetoneKetone (PEKK) compared to Cobalt-Chromium (CoCr) in digitally fabricated double crown removable partial dentures for lower Kennedy Class I cases.

BACKGROUND: Implant-supported removable partial dentures (ISRPDs) provide effective prosthodontic treatment for partially edentulous patients. ISRPDs offer greater patient satisfaction and better oral function compared with removable partial dentures (RPDs) by enhancing denture stability and support. However, few clinical studies have focused on RPD design in patients with mandibular Kennedy Class II edentulism. The aim of this case reports was to investigate the oral function, oral health-related quality of life, and satisfaction of four patients with unilateral distal-extension mandibular RP
