Postpartum feeding attitudes, maternal depression, and breastfeeding in Barbados.

Maternal feeding attitudes, maternal moods and infant feeding practices during the first 6 months postpartum were assessed in 226 healthy, well-nourished Barbadian mother-infant dyads. Factor analysis of the feeding attitudes questionnaire resulted in six independent factors. The belief that breastfeeding was better than bottle-feeding was associated with higher family income, more information seeking behavior and older maternal age at the time of her first pregnancy. Women who believed that breastfeeding was better at 7 weeks postpartum were also more likely to breastfeed at concurrent and la

Factors associated with postpartum depression symptoms following antepartum hospitalization.

BACKGROUND: Hospitalized antepartum patients are at increased risk for postpartum depression (PPD). Developing approaches to identify those at highest risk for PPD would enable timely and targeted intervention. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to identify factors associated with the development of PPD symptoms in hospitalized antepartum patients and to assess their predictive utility. STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective cohort study included pregnant individuals hospitalized in a regional referral center due to medical or obstetric complications between 2012 and 2025. Data were extracted from the electronic

Infant emotionality and maternal depression at 6 months postpartum.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression is a global concern associated with multiple complications, including the risk of suicide. Beyond the suffering experienced by women with postpartum depression, research provides evidence of its negative impact on mother-infant relationships. However, little attention has been given to the potential impact of infant characteristics on development or severity of postpartum depression. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine if greater infant emotionality is associated with symptoms of maternal depression at 6 months postpartum. Emotionality was d

Psychiatric Risk Factors for Postpartum Depression: A Systematic Review.

The perinatal period, due to the many physical, psychological, and social changes in future mothers, may represent a critical phase with an increased risk for mental health. Postpartum depression (PPD) is one of the main syndromes that affect around 17 percent of women after pregnancy and in the first months of motherhood. This systematic review, following PRISMA guidelines, aimed to identify the main pre-partum psychiatric risk factors that may influence the occurrence and diagnosis of PPD with a focus on the antenatal and clinical history of depression, bipolar disorders, obsessive-compulsiv

Real-World Outcomes of Brexanolone to Treat Postpartum Depression.

BACKGROUND: While the efficacy of brexanolone, a U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved infusion treatment for postpartum depression (PPD), has been demonstrated in controlled trials, few reports are available describing its real-world effectiveness. METHODS: Leveraging real-world clinical data, the current report describes the characteristics and treatment outcomes of a sample of women (N = 150) receiving brexanolone treatment for PPD in a residential-style outpatient treatment center with up to 12 months of follow-up. The sample had a mean age of 30.0 years (SD = 4.5), with almost one-t

Postpartum Depression and Its Determinants: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background Postpartum depression (PPD) is the most prevalent psychological disorder after childbirth associated with a negative impact on the daily functioning of mothers and the cognitive development of infants. Inequitable primary mental health access in lower-middle-income countries (LMICs) further aggravates this major public health problem. Objective The objective of this study is to estimate the prevalence and determinants of PPD among women reporting to secondary care facilities in Delhi, India. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in the outpatient settings of two secondary ca

Postpartum Depression: Etiology, Treatment, and Consequences for Maternal Care.

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a disabling condition that has recently shown an increase in prevalence, becoming an essential public health problem. This study is a qualitative review summarizing the most frequent risk factors associated with PPD, evaluating molecular aspects of PPD and current approaches to detect and prevent PPD. The most prevalent risk factors were detected in the areas of economic and social factors, obstetrical history, lifestyle, and history of mental illness. Research on the genetic basis for PPD has taken place in recent years to identify the genes responsible for esta

Blood metabolomic and postpartum depression: a mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression is a complex mental health condition that often occurs after childbirth and is characterized by persistent sadness, anxiety, and fatigue. Recent research suggests a metabolic component to the disorder. This study aims to investigate the causal relationship between blood metabolites and postpartum depression using mendelian randomization (MR). METHODS: This study used a bi-directional MR framework to investigate the causal relationship between 1,400 metabolic biomarkers and postpartum depression. We used two specific genome-wide association studies datasets: o

Influence of maternal postpartum depression on children's toothbrushing frequency.

OBJECTIVES: Daily toothbrushing behaviour is very effective for the prevention of early childhood dental caries (ECC), but is mostly dependent upon parental management. Intrapersonal association between lower toothbrushing frequency and depression is well known; however, the impact of maternal postpartum depression on child toothbrushing behaviour within the mother-child dyad remains unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the association between the prevalence of maternal postpartum depression and lower toothbrushing frequency in children aged two years. METHODS: A secondary analysis

Brexanolone for Postpartum Depression: Clinical Evidence and Practical Considerations.

Our aim was to review the efficacy, safety, and pharmacology of brexanolone (Zulresso), a new antidepressant with a novel mechanism of action, in the treatment of postpartum depression (PPD). Pertinent data and information were obtained via PubMed (1993 to August 2018). Articles published in English that evaluated the safety and efficacy of brexanolone and other off-label PPD treatments were included. Literature regarding epidemiology and pathophysiology of PPD was also selected. Brexanolone, administered as an intravenous infusion over 60 hours, produced a statistically significant and clinic

The relationship between neonatal encephalopathy and maternal postpartum depression.

Purpose: Neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a type of brain injury resulting from insufficient oxygen and blood supply. The standard treatment for HIE is therapeutic hypothermia (TH), which involves a 72-h period of hypothermia, during which time the infant is isolated from his/her parents. The primary objective of this study was to assess the effects of the diagnosis of neonatal encephalopathy and subsequent separation on rates of maternal postpartum depression (PPD) as compared to other hospitalized infants.Materials and methods: Case-control analysis of newborns admitted to t

Insomnia, postpartum depression and estradiol in women after delivery.

After childbirth, women may develop symptoms of depression with the associated sleep disturbances. This study assessed the relationship between insomnia and both depression symptoms and blood estradiol levels in women during the early postpartum period. 84 patients were assessed 24-48 h after labor. The main assessment methods were the following psychometric scales: Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS). Serum estradiol levels were measured using ELISA assay. Women who developed postpartum insomnia significantly more often

Treatment of postpartum depression: clinical, psychological and pharmacological options.

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common complication of childbearing, and has increasingly been identified as a major public health problem. Untreated maternal depression has multiple potential negative effects on maternal-infant attachment and child development. Screening for depression in the perinatal period is feasible in multiple primary care or obstetric settings, and can help identify depressed mothers earlier. However, there are multiple barriers to appropriate treatment, including concerns about medication effects in breastfeeding infants. This article reviews the literature and recom

Pregnancy massage reduces prematurity, low birthweight and postpartum depression.

Pregnant women diagnosed with major depression were given 12 weeks of twice per week massage therapy by their significant other or only standard treatment as a control group. The massage therapy group women versus the control group women not only had reduced depression by the end of the therapy period, but they also had reduced depression and cortisol levels during the postpartum period. Their newborns were also less likely to be born prematurely and low birthweight, and they had lower cortisol levels and performed better on the Brazelton Neonatal Behavioral Assessment habituation, orientation

Cerebral Autosomal Dominant Arteriopathy With Subcortical Infarcts and Leukoencephalopathy Presenting During the Postpartum Period as Postpartum Depression and Postpartum Psychosis.

Cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL) is a rare inherited disease that presents with neurologic manifestations such as stroke, psychiatric disturbances, migraine, and cognitive decline. We report a case of a previously well 27-year-old lady presenting with new onset confusion four weeks postpartum. On examination, there was right-sided weakness and tremors. A thorough history revealed existing diagnoses of CADASIL in 1st and 2nd-degree relatives. The diagnosis in this patient was confirmed by MRI of the brain and genetic testing fo

Responsive Feeding, Infant Growth, and Postpartum Depressive Symptoms During 3 Months Postpartum.

Responsive feeding is crucial to the formation of life-long healthy eating behavior. Few studies have examined maternal responsive feeding in early infancy among a Chinese population. This prospective study describes maternal responsive feeding and factors associated with maternal responsive feeding, with emphasis on infant growth and maternal depressive symptoms, during the first 3 months postpartum in Taiwan. From 2015 to 2017, 438 pregnant women were recruited and followed at 1 and 3 months postpartum. Maternal responsive feeding at 3 months was measured on a 10-item 5-point Likert-type sca
