Decreases in overall light level increase the severity of the reverse Pulfrich effect.

The Pulfrich effect is an illusion characterized by the misperception of the depth and 3D direction of moving objects. Interocular luminance differences cause the classic Pulfrich effect; the darker image is processed more slowly. Interocular blur differences cause the reverse Pulfrich effect; the blurrier image is processed more quickly. A common correction for presbyopia-monovision-intentionally induces the optical conditions that cause the reverse Pulfrich effect. The effect sizes, and the fact that tens of millions of people wear these corrections every day, raise concerns about public saf

Targeted reaching with monocular depth information and haptic feedback: Comparing between monocular patients and normally sighted observers.

Monocular blindness impairs visual depth perception, yet patients seldom report difficulties in targeted actions like reaching, walking, or driving. We hypothesized that by utilizing monocular depth information and calibrating actions with haptic feedback, monocular patients can perceive egocentric distance and perform targeted actions. We compared targeted reaching in monocular patients, monocular-viewing, and binocular-viewing normal controls. Sixty observers reached either a far or a near target, calibrating reaches to the near target with accurate or false feedback while leaving reaches to

Boundary segmentation from dynamic occlusion-based motion parallax.

Active observer movement results in retinal image motion that is highly dependent on the scene layout. This retinal motion, often called motion parallax, can yield significant information about the boundaries between objects and their relative depth differences. Previously we examined segmentation from shear-based motion parallax, which consists of only relative motion information. Here, we examine segmentation from dynamic occlusion-based motion parallax, which contains both relative motion and accretion-deletion. We utilized random dots whose motion was modulated with vertical low spatial fr

The dichoptiscope: an instrument for investigating cues to motion in depth.

A stereoscope displays 2-D images with binocular disparities (stereograms), which fuse to form a 3-D stereoscopic object. But a stereoscopic object creates a conflict between vergence and accommodation. Also, motion in depth of a stereoscopic object simulated solely from change in target vergence produces anomalous motion parallax and anomalous changes in perspective. We describe a new instrument, which overcomes these problems. We call it the dichoptiscope. It resembles a mirror stereoscope, but instead of stereograms, it displays identical 2-D or 3-D physical objects to each eye. When a pair

Pulfrich revisited.

The Pulfrich phenomenon is a stereo-illusion resulting from latency disparities in the visual pathways. It is common after optic neuritis, but is also to be found with other conditions. The symptoms are often difficult for the patient to explain and for the physician to understand. Symptoms may be sufficiently disturbing to significantly interfere with a patient's life (e.g., prevention of driving). Treatment with the use of monocular tints is simple and effective.

Interocular Contrast Balancing Partially Improves Stereoacuity in Keratoconus.

SIGNIFICANCE: Partial improvement in stereoacuity may be achieved by balancing the contrast input to the two eyes of patients with bilaterally asymmetric keratoconus. PURPOSE: Interocular differences in image quality, characterized by dissimilar contrast loss and phase shifts, are implicated in stereoacuity loss in keratoconus. This study determined whether contrast balancing improves stereoacuity in this disease condition and, if so, whether it is dependent on the baseline interocular contrast imbalance. METHODS: Interocular contrast imbalance and stereoacuity of 43 subjects (16 to 33 years

Using the White Disk Test to Predict Fusional Potential.

INTRODUCTION: Fusional potential in patients experiencing binocular torsional diplopia may be challenging for the clinician to assess, particularly when accompanied by vertical and horizontal diplopia. OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate a clinical test that may help predict if binocular fusion can be achieved once cyclotorsion is alleviated. DESIGN: Video recording demonstrating how to perform the white disk test and retrospective chart review of patients tested with the white disk test. RESULTS: Twelve patients with binocular torsional diplopia were included. All subjects had excyclotorsion, 11 (91

Interaction between sampled rays' defocusing and number on accommodative response in integral imaging near-eye light field displays.

In an integral imaging near-eye light field display using a microlens array, a point on a reconstructed depth plane (RDP) is reconstructed by sampled rays. Previous studies respectively suggested the accommodative response may shift from the RDP under two circumstances: (i) the RDP is away from the central depth plane (CDP) to introduce defocusing in sampled rays; (ii) the sampled ray number is too low. However, sampled rays' defocusing and number may interact, and the interaction's influence on the accommodative response has been little revealed. Therefore, this study adopts a proven imaging

Vergence eye movements are not essential for stereoscopic depth.

The brain receives disparate retinal input owing to the separation of the eyes, yet we usually perceive a single fused world. This is because of complex interactions between sensory and oculomotor processes that quickly act to reduce excessive retinal disparity. This implies a strong link between depth perception and fusion, but it is well established that stereoscopic depth percepts are also obtained from stimuli that produce double images. Surprisingly, the nature of depth percepts from such diplopic stimuli remains poorly understood. Specifically, despite long-standing debate it is unclear

[Anisometropia and stereopsis].

PURPOSE: To examine the amount of defect of stereopsis in experimentally induced anisometropia of various value and type. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 20 healthy adults without significant refraction error or anisometropia and with full stereopsis were examined. They all undergone Titmus stereotest (circles) after they had experimentally induced anisometropia with the use of trial lenses. Mean values of stereopsis in arc sec. were calculated for each value of anisometropia. RESULTS: The largest defect of stereopsis was noted in spherical hypermetropia. In all kinds of refraction error the critical

[Why two eyes?].

Having two eyes instead of just one is advantageous in at least six respects: the danger of blindness is decreased, the visual field is enlarged, stereoscopic depth perception is possible on the basis of binocular disparities, the position of the eyes relative to the head can be computed from the images of both eyes, visual obstacles in front of the horopter perceptually shrink, and the signal-to-noise ratio is increased.

Stereopsis measured by random-dot patterns--a new clinical test.

Comparative measures are presented of stereo-acuity by random-dot stereograms using a phase difference haploscope and a Titmus stereogram. Using two groups of fifteen subjects each, one with full binocular vision and the other of small-angle strabismic amblyopes, greater discrimination between subject groups was found with the random-dot stereograms. It is concluded that random-dot stereograms produced by crossed Polaroid would be a more effective clinical means of determining stereo-acuity.

Neural response to perception of volume in the lateral occipital complex.

Projection of a 3D scene onto the 2D retina necessarily entails a loss of information, yet perceivers experience a world populated with volumetric objects. Using simultaneous behavioral and neural (fMRI) measures, we identify neural bases of volume perception. Neural activity in the lateral occipital cortex increased with presentation of 3D volumes relative to presentation of 2D shapes. Neural activity also modulated with perceived volume, independent of image information. When behavioral responses indicated that observers saw ambiguous images as 3D volumes, neural response increased; when beh

Perception of three-dimensional shape specified by optic flow by 8-week-old infants.

Sensitivity of 8-week-old infants to optical flow specifying the shape of a three-dimensional object was assessed. Infants viewed kinetic random-dot displays that specified three-dimensional cubes. The cubes were identical except for the presence or absence of an interior corner. Half of the infants viewed the full display. The other half viewed the central region of the displays, where the flow specifying the presence or absence of the corner differed. Infants in the full-view condition looked significantly longer to a novel cube than to the familiar cube following habituation. In contrast, i

Reexamining the Relationship Between Stereopsis and Motion Parallax.

Depth perception depends on two powerful cues, stereopsis and motion parallax, that share similar geometric foundations but operate under distinct constraints. When observer motion is self-generated and the scene is stationary, the two can produce comparable depth percepts. However, disparity generally supports finer discrimination and more accurate depth magnitude percepts. Real-world depth perception from both cues is complicated by eye movements and matching ambiguity, but motion parallax faces additional challenges due to head movements and the presence of object and scene motion. Empirica

Representation of perceived object shape by the human lateral occipital complex.

The human lateral occipital complex (LOC) has been implicated in object recognition, but it is unknown whether this region represents low-level image features or perceived object shape. We used an event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging adaptation paradigm in which the response to pairs of successively presented stimuli is lower when they are identical than when they are different. Adaptation across a change between the two stimuli in a pair provides evidence for a common neural representation invariant to that change. We found adaptation in the LOC when perceived shape was identic

Optokinetic nystagmus with spontaneous reversal of transparent motion perception.

When two visual patterns moving in opposite directions are superimposed, they appear to be at different depths and to slide over each other. Because the stimulus does not specify the depth-order between the surfaces, this transparent motion perception is essentially ambiguous. With prolonged observation, the perceived depth-order of the two moving surfaces reverses spontaneously. In the present study, the correlation between the perceived direction of transparent motion and optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) was examined. While viewing superimposed random-dot patterns moving in opposite horizontal or

Visual processing of the motion of an object in three dimensions for a stationary or a moving observer.

A rate of change of relatively disparity is a sufficient binocular stimulus for the perception of motion in depth. For motion within the meridian that contains the eyes, disparity change associated with approaching motion is processed through four channels, each tuned to a different direction of motion in depth. Directional discrimination is most acute but detection sensitivity falls to a minimum for a trajectory passing approximately midway between the eyes. This can be explained if discrimination depends on the relatively of the four channels. Two binocular retinal-image correlates of the di

Evidence for good recovery of lengths of real objects seen with natural stereo viewing.

Six experiments are described in which good performance of the task of matching the lengths of two stationary real objects, gnarled wooden sticks, under a variety of binocular viewing conditions, including variations in viewing distances was demonstrated. Relatively poor matching performance was observed when the sticks were viewed monocularly in oscillatory motion, or monocularly and stationary. The results suggest that stereo can support good representations of metric scene structure when length judgments of natural objects are required under (quasi-)natural viewing. The implications of thes
