Cotton rats and other small mammals as hosts for immature Dermacentor variabilis (Acari: Ixodidae) in central Oklahoma.

Eight species of small mammals were evaluated as potential hosts for American dog ticks, Dermacentor variabilis (Say), in an upland, tallgrass prairie study site in central Oklahoma. Only hispid cotton rats, Sigmodon hispidus, and deer mice, Peromyscus maniculatus, were found to be important hosts for immature D. variabilis. Although D. varibilis larvae and nymphs frequently infested both cotton rats and deer mice, cotton rats were the most important host species for both immature stages in the study area. Cotton rats constituted 63.2% of the total 530 small mammals captured and were hosts to

Effect of Dermacentor albipictus (Acari:Ixodidae) on blood composition, weight gain and hair coat of moose, Alces alces.

The physiological effects of the winter tick, Dermacentor albipictus, on moose, Alces alces, were investigated. Blood composition, weight gain, food intake and change in the hair coat of moose calves, four infested with D. albipictus larvae, and eight uninfested, were monitored. Infested moose groomed extensively, apparently in response to feeding nymphal and adult ticks, and developed alopecia. Other clinical signs included: chronic weight loss, anemia, hypoalbuminemia, hypophosphatemia, and transient decreases in serum aspartate transaminase and calcium during the period of nymphal and adult

Immunity of dogs against Babesia canis, its vector tick Dermacentor reticulatus, and Ixodes ricinus in endemic area.

Previous epidemiological studies allowed us to accurately define endemic areas of canine babesiosis and tick distribution in southeastern France (Martinod, 1983). Using a micro-ELISA test 100 dogs sera were tested with 3 antigens: Babesia canis, Dermacentor reticulatus and Ixodes ricinus. Antibodies against B. canis and its vector D. reticulatus were detected in an endemic area, sometimes with high levels (optical density 1.38 and 0.80 respectively). A correlation factor and regression lines were found between ELISA activity of B. canis and vector tick antigens, even for dogs which never showe

The first genetic study of Babesia caballi, Theileria equi, and Babesia occultans in Dermacentor spp. in Russian Siberia.

Equine piroplasmosis (EP) is a worldwide infection of Equides caused mainly by Theileria equi and Babesia caballi. Recently, these agents have been found in horses in the Republic of Altai. To identify probable vectors for EP agents in Western Siberia, 443 adult questing Dermacentor spp. (199 D. silvarum, 236 D. nuttalli, and 8 D. marginatus) were collected from vegetation in four districts of the Republic of Altai and examined for the presence of Piroplasmida DNA. Three Piroplasmida species were identified. Babesia caballi was found in ten (2.3%) Dermacentor spp., including eight D. silvarum

Study of the non-parasitic stage in Ixodes ricinus after co-feeding with Dermacentor reticulatus in three infestations.

It was proved that transmission of some pathogens may occur between infected and uninfected ticks co-feeding on a host in the absence of systemic infection. The effect was studied of co-feeding of two different tick species Ixodes ricinus and Dermacentor reticulatus on the course of the non-parasitic stage. Species chosen for the experiment may share their habitats and co-infest animals in nature. In the course of the study the process of egg maturation, oviposition and larval hatching were investigated. In order to estimate if co-feeding influence can counteract host immunity, three subsequen

First record of Borrelia burgdorferi B31 strain in Dermacentor nitens ticks in the northern region of Parana (Brazil).

The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of DNA of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.) in ticks that feed on horses used for animal traction in rural Jataizinho, Parana, Brazil. Between February and June 2008, a total of 224 ticks was collected of which 75% were identified as Dermacentor nitens and 25% as Amblyomma cajenense. To amplify B. burgdorferi s.l. DNA, the intergenic space region (ISR) between the 5S (rrf) 23S (rrl) rRNA genes was used as targets for nested-PCR. Two ticks of the D. nitens species were positive for B. burgdorferi s.l. Both species showed a fragment of 1

An Australian record of the American dog tick Dermacentor variabilis, and the risk of its establishment outside North America.

A living female of Dermacentor variabilis (Say) was collected in Canberra, Australia, on a human who had recently returned from the U.S.A. Climatic data indicate that this could become established in eastern Australia and many other parts of the world, with serious consequences for human and animal health.

Development and Validation of Real-Time PCR for Detecting Anaplasma bovis-Like Agent in Dermacentor spp. Ticks.

We developed and validated a real-time PCR to detect an Anaplasma bovis-like agent. We applied that assay to 672 Dermacentor spp. ticks collected from across the United States and found 0.1% A. bovis-like agent prevalence. This assay could enhance epidemiologic surveys for this A. bovis-like agent in ticks and humans.

Environmental factors determining the survival of winter ticks (Dermacentor albipictus) at different life stages in Québec, Canada.

Ticks are responsible for large economic losses because of their impact on livestock and wildlife. In recent years, winter ticks (Dermacentor albipictus) have caused mass mortalities in moose (alces) populations of North America, leading to host mortality due to severe blood loss. During their off-host stages (i.e. egg and larvae), winter ticks are particularly vulnerable to mortality because of potential exposure to stressful abiotic conditions that could dehydrate eggs or freeze larvae. We conducted a field experiment in Québec, Canada, to better understand larval questing behaviour and asse

Origins of recently emerged foci of the tick Dermacentor reticulatus in central Europe inferred from molecular markers.

The ornate dog tick Dermacentor reticulatus is vector of several blood parasites, including Babesia canis, a causative agent of babesiosis. The geographical range of D. reticulatus in Europe is discontinuous with a gap separating eastern and western macroregions. New foci observed in several locations in western and central Europe were considered an expansion of the western population, including foci in western Poland. In the present paper we used molecular markers to identify the origins of these foci, and we compared their genetic polymorphism to D. reticulatus collected in sites situated wi

Questing Dermacentor reticulatus harbouring Babesia canis DNA associated with outbreaks of canine babesiosis in the Swiss Midlands.

In 2011 and 2012, outbreaks of clinical canine babesiosis were observed in 2 areas of the Swiss Midlands that had no history of this disease so far. In one area, cases of canine babesiosis occurred over 2 consecutive tick seasons. The outbreaks involved 29 dogs, 4 of which died. All dogs were infected with large Babesia sp. as diagnosed in Giemsa-stained blood smears and/or PCR. These were identified as B. canis (formerly known as B. canis canis) by subsequent partial sequencing of the 18S rRNA gene of Babesia sp. Interestingly, the sequence indicated either a genotype with heterogeneity in th

Molecular detection of spotted fever group Rickettsia in Dermacentor silvarum from a forest area of northeastern China.

In total, 676 Dermacentor silvarum Olenev (Acari: Ixodidae) from a forest area of Jilin Province in northeastern China were examined by polymerase chain reaction for the presence of spotted fever group (SFG) Rickettsia. The overall positive rate was 10.7%, with a 95% confidence interval from 8.3 to 13.0%. The SFG Rickettsia infection was more prevalent in adults than in nymphs, and in fed ticks obtained from domestic animals than in those collected on vegetation. Sequence analysis of the partial outer membrane protein A gene confirmed the existence of R. sibirica and discovered a novel rickett

Evaluation of the efficacy of Simparica Trio® in the prevention of the transmission of Babesia canis by infected Dermacentor reticulatus to dogs.

BACKGROUND: Babesia canis is a clinically relevant vector-borne pathogen in dogs, and its presence is expanding. The efficacy of Simparica Trio® (Zoetis) in the prevention of B. canis transmission was evaluated at the minimum recommended label dose of 1.2 mg/kg sarolaner, 24 µg/kg moxidectin and 5 mg/kg pyrantel per kg bodyweight. METHODS: Twenty-four (24) dogs were randomly allocated to either a placebo-treated group or one of two treatment groups with Simparica Trio. Dogs were infested with B. canis-infected Dermacentor reticulatus ticks 21 or 28 days after treatment administration. Blood s

Unique Strain of Rickettsia parkeri Associated with the Hard Tick Dermacentor parumapertus Neumann in the Western United States.

In 1953, investigators at the Rocky Mountain Laboratories in Hamilton, MT, described the isolation of a spotted fever group Rickettsia (SFGR) species from Dermacentor parumapertus ticks collected from black-tailed jackrabbits (Lepus californicus) in northern Nevada. Several decades later, investigators characterized this SFGR (designated the parumapertus agent) by using mouse serotyping methods and determined that it represented a distinct rickettsial serotype closely related to Rickettsia parkeri; nonetheless, the parumapertus agent was not further characterized or studied. To our knowledge,

The first record and occurrence of the ornate cow tick Dermacentor reticulatus (Fabricius, 1794) in south-western Poland.

The following report concerns the first record and occurrence of an ornate cow tick (Dermacentor reticulatus) in the Silesian province. One female and one male were collected from a dog in the veterinary clinic in Racib6rz, while in the vicinity of Zywiec one female tick was found also on a dog. Ticks collected in Racib6rz are most probably part of the local fauna, while the specimen from Zywiec may have come from the Warsaw area, the source of the host. These findings confirm changes of European distribution recorded lately for this species and the role of humans in this process. However, the

Prevalence of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) RNA in Dermacentor reticulatus ticks from natural and urban environment, Poland.

Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) (Flaviviridae, Flavivirus) is an arthropod-borne virus, an etiologic agent of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), a human infection involving the central nervous system. The disease is endemic in a large region in Eurasia, where it is transmitted mainly by Ixodes ricinus and Ixodes persulcatus ticks. It is known that also Dermacentor reticulatus is involved in circulation of TBEV. However, the current knowledge of D. reticulatus importance in TBE epidemiology is still insufficient. A total of 471 adult D. reticulatus ticks were collected by flagging vegetation i

Deep mitochondrial DNA lineage divergences within Alberta populations of Dermacentor albipictus (Acari: Ixodidae) do not indicate distinct species.

The winter tick Dermacentor albipictus (Packard) has a single-host life cycle that allows it to reach severe infestation levels on ungulates, particularly moose. Genotypic variation within these and related ticks has been a source of taxonomic confusion, although the continuity in their morphology and life history has generally been interpreted as indicating the existence of a single species. To further investigate this variation, we sequenced regions of two mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) genes (COI and 16S rDNA),two nuclear genes (lysozyme and ITS-2), and two bacterial markers from Francisella-lik
