There is a close bidirectional relationship between chronic pain and psychological trauma disorders, which frequently results in more intense suffering and greater impairment for those affected. This article elucidates the intricate interrelationships between chronic pain, early childhood stress, and traumatic experiences as well as the underlying neurobiological, neuroimmunological and psychosocial mechanisms. Early childhood trauma, such as abuse or neglect, has a significant impact on individuals during particularly vulnerable phases of development, leading to long-lasting changes at variou

BACKGROUND: During the horrific war in the Democratic Republic of Congo during the years 1996-2007 the number of casualties is estimated to be 5.4 million. In addition, 1.8 million women, children and men were raped, many as a social weapon of war. Many of these women still suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and mutilated genitals.
OBJECTIVES: To assess a short-term interventional team for the evaluation and treatment of sexual trauma victims.
METHODS: The intervention program comprised four components: training the local staff, medical evaluation and treatment of patients, ps

By comparing efficacious psychological therapies of different kinds, inferences about common effective treatment mechanisms can be made. We selected six therapies for review on the basis of the diversity of their theoretical rationales and evidence for superior efficacy: psychoanalytic psychotherapy, hypercapnic breathing training, hypocapnic breathing training, reprocessing with and without eye-movement desensitization, muscle relaxation, and cognitive behavior therapy. The likely common element of all these therapies is that they reduce the immediate expectancy of a panic attack, disrupting

There is limited literature specific to neuropathic pain in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-induced acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (AIDP). We present a unique case of a 20-year-old vaccinated female with a past medical history of chronic hepatitis B virus and untreated anxiety who presented to the emergency department due to an intractable headache and horizontal diplopia in the setting of active COVID-19 infection. During acute hospitalization, the patient was diagnosed with the Miller-Fisher variant of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), a disease with a known association wit

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a generalized, widespread chronic pain disorder affecting 2.7% of the general population. In recent years, different studies have observed a strong association between FM and psychological trauma. Therefore, a trauma-focused psychotherapy, such as eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), combined with a non-invasive brain stimulation technique, such as multifocal transcranial current stimulation (MtCS), could be an innovative adjunctive treatment option. This double-blind randomized controlled trial (RCT) analyzes if EMDR therapy is effective in th

INTRODUCTION: Infertility is a global health concern affecting 10%-15% of couples, often accompanied by profound psychological distress for women. Various psychological interventions being trialled in this population, outcomes have been mixed, underscoring the need for innovative therapeutic approaches. Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, originally developed for trauma-related conditions, is a promising alternative. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of EMDR therapy in reducing infertility-related distress and improving psychological well-being among women

BackgroundInfertility-related distress is associated with elevated rates of anxiety, depression, grief, and identity disruption. While existing frameworks often conceptualise infertility distress through stress and coping paradigms, these approaches may not fully explain the cumulative and reactivating experience of infertility distress. Trauma-informed perspectives, including the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model, may offer an alternative framework for understanding infertility-related distress.ObjectivesTo explore how women experiencing infertility describe and make meaning of thei

OBJECTIVE: Considerable research examines fear conditioning in adult anxiety disorders but few studies examine youths. Adult data suggest that anxiety disorders involve elevated fear but intact differential conditioning. We used a novel paradigm to assess fear conditioning in pediatric anxiety patients.
METHOD: Sixteen individuals with anxiety disorders and 38 healthy comparisons viewed two photographs of actresses displaying neutral expressions. One picture served as the conditioned stimulus (CS), paired with a fearful expression and a shrieking scream (CS+), whereas the other picture served

A growing body of literature suggests that virtual reality is a successful tool for exposure therapy in the treatment of anxiety disorders. Virtual reality (VR) researchers posit the construct of presence, defined as the interpretation of an artificial stimulus as if it were real, to be a presumed factor that enables anxiety to be felt during virtual reality exposure therapy (VRE). However, a handful of empirical studies on the relation between presence and anxiety in VRE have yielded mixed findings. The current study tested the following hypotheses about the relation between presence and anxi

Fear of dental procedures deters many individuals with mental retardation from accepting dental treatment. This study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of two procedures, in vivo desensitization and video modeling, for increasing compliance with dental procedures in participants with severe or profound mental retardation. Desensitization increased compliance for all 5 participants, whereas video modeling increased compliance for only 1 of 3 participants.

Anxiety engendered by the workplace leads to an inability to work and earn one's living. The term workplace phobia is applied when anxiety leads to avoidance of the workplace. As in the case of school phobia, a range of differential diagnoses may be involved, requiring careful clarification. Such may include post-traumatic stress disease, posttraumatic embitterment, social phobia, personality disorders, depression and organic brain disease. The treatment of workplace-related phobia differs from that of other phobias because of the peculiarities of the workplace. Simply giving the patient sick

This article presents a new development on the field of psychotherapy: Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). This recently developed procedure promises rapid and effective treatment of anxiety related complaints, including post-traumatic stress disorders (DSM-III-R). In essence the therapist induces a series of rapid and rhythmic eye-movements. EMDR facilitates cognitive changes and lasting decrease of anxiety. As indicated by research and illustrated by case histories, EMDR can be effective in one session. Until now there is no definitive explanation for the effectiveness of t

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of one session of instructions on the frequency of chronic nightmares and on self-rated distress.
METHOD: Twenty-eight volunteers with chronic nightmares (mean duration = 19 years) were treated with either one session of desensitization with instructions on how to practice this treatment or with one session of instructions to change the nightmare and how to rehearse the new version. The authors administered four scales of the SCL-90 and the corresponding scales of the Symptom Questionnaire.
RESULTS: At 7-month follow-up of 23 pa

Analyses of scaled self-report data from Vietnam War veterans receiving inpatient treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder drawn during a program evaluation study suggested inpatient treatment as provided by the program resulted in significant improvement in the areas of Anxiety, Anger, Depression, Isolation, Intrusive Thoughts (of combat experiences), Flashbacks, Nightmares (of combat experiences), and Relationship Problems. Comparing the relative effects of the incremental addition of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Relaxation Training, and Biofeedback found that EM

This case report describes the successful treatment of a posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) using eye movement desensitization (EMD). The client, a 40-year-old male, presented with an 8-year history of PTSD following an incident in which he was shot with a hand gun and left dying. Using EMD treatment, this trauma was quickly desensitized. Two earlier traumas with similar themes then emerged and they too were desensitized. Test results, taken pre-treatment and posttreatment, along with the client's verbatim account of cognitive and behavioral changes 8 months later, converged to document the

Although humans frequently develop preferences for innately unpalatable bitter or irritant substances, such preferences are extremely rare in animals. An attempt was made to understand the nature of this difference by systematic experiments with laboratory rats, with chili pepper as the unpalatable substance. In parallel with major aspects of the human experience with chili pepper, rats were exposed to it as a flavoring in all their food for periods up to 11 mo from birth, without significant preference enhancement. Gradual introduction of chili into the diet also had no effect, nor did a seri

This study investigated the impact of group systematic desensitization (SD) on varied aspects of sexual functioning in primary and secondary nonorgasmic women. After serving as their own controls, 22 women (eight primary, 14 secondary) received 15 sessions of group SD using four common hierarchies of sexual scenes. The measures were administered to each subject and her regular sex partner at each of the testing periods. Significant positive treatment effects were found on measures of general and specific sexual adjustment and in extracoital orgasmic frequency. Treatment also enhanced sexual co

BACKGROUND: Mass outbreaks such as pandemics are associated with mental health problems requiring effective psychological interventions. Although several forms of psychological interventions may be advocated or used, some may lack strong evidence of efficacy and some may not have been evaluated in mass infectious disease outbreaks. This paper reports a systematic review of published studies (PROSPERO CRD:42020182094. Registered: 24.04.2020) examining the types and effectiveness of psychological support interventions for the general population and healthcare workers exposed to mass infectious d

Traditional psychiatric thought has equated the inability of a female to obtain an orgasm (particularly a vaginal orgasm during intercourse) with psychological maladjustment. The research literature generally does not support this position. The present paper describes the psychological characteristics of 44 frigid women who applied for treatment of their sexual problem at two university hospital sex clinics and 26 women selected for treatment by the same criterion, but treated in private practice. Presented for comparison are 53 female neurotics from a Temple University Hospital psychotherapy

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy utilizes the manipulation of eye movements to reduce affective distress during fear-exposure. Animal research recently suggested a potential neural mechanism underlying these effects, by which increased activity of the superior colliculus (SC), mediating visual attention, increases the inhibition of the basolateral amygdala (BLA), mediating defensive plasticity. We tested such mechanism in forty healthy humans using a multiple-day single-cue fear conditioning and extinction paradigm. The activity of the SC during extinction was exper
