BACKGROUND: Women with intellectual and developmental disabilities have high rates of pregnancy complications. However, their postpartum health is largely unknown. We compared risks for postpartum hospital admissions and emergency department visits among women with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities.
METHODS: We conducted a population-based study using linked Ontario (Canada) health and social services administrative data to identify singleton live births to women with (N = 3,803) and without intellectual and developmental disabilities (N = 378,313) (2002-2012). Outcomes

BACKGROUND: People with intellectual/developmental disabilities (IDDs) face the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD) similar to the general population. The purpose of this study was to describe and compare the presence of CVD risk factors, the atherosclerotic cardiovascular (ASCVD) risk score, and medication prescribing patterns for medications to treat related risk factors for patients with IDD and those without.
METHODS: This was a retrospective study of patients age 18years and older of a health system's primary care medicine practices. The IDD group had documentation of a diagnosis

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To emphasise the oral health needs of older individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, the impact on the individual's general health and the role that can be played by nurses.
BACKGROUND: All too often an examination and consideration of the oral health condition of this patient population by nurses/physicians is cursory at best. The increasing retention of the dentition into later years of life provides both the favourable abilities for eating, speech and self esteem, but also the potential for local and general health concerns.
DESIGN: Discursive pap

We reviewed studies involving the treatment of bruxism (i.e., teeth clenching or teeth grinding) in individuals with developmental disabilities. Systematic searches of electronic databases, journals, and reference lists identified 11 studies meeting the inclusion criteria. These studies were evaluated in terms of: (a) participants, (b) procedures used to assess bruxism, (c) intervention procedures, (d) results of the intervention, and (e) certainty of evidence. Across the 11 studies, intervention was provided to a total of 19 participants aged 4-43 years. Assessment procedures included dental

PURPOSE: A case of extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS) following administration of aripiprazole to a man with developmental disabilities who had never received antipsychotic medications and had no history of movement disorders is presented.
SUMMARY: The patient was a 40-year-old male with developmental disabilities. He was nonverbal, profoundly mentally retarded, and diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and orthopedic problems. He developed episodic movements possibly consistent with EPS secondary to aripiprazole usage. The patient was antipsychotic naive before initiation of aripipra

Fractures are more prevalent among people with severe and profound developmental disabilities than in the general population. In order to characterize the tendency of these people to fracture, and to identify features that may guide the development of preventive strategies, we analyzed fracture epidemiology in people with severe and profound developmental disabilities who lived in a stable environment. Data from a 23-year longitudinal cohort registry of 1434 people with severe and profound developmental disabilities were analyzed to determine the effects of age, gender, mobility, bone fracture

This article presents ideas that are, in part, a response to the ambiguity in the neurological research on learning disorders, the growing awareness that developmental disabilities are typically nonspecific and heterogeneous, and the growing scientific literature showing that comorbidity of symptoms and syndromes is the rule rather than the exception. This article proposes the term atypical brain development (ABD) as a unifying concept to assist researchers and educators trying to come to terms with these dilemmas. ABD is meant to serve as an integrative concept of etiology, the expression of

Preliminary information about the population characteristics of developmentally disabled persons in the State of New York is presented. The information was derived through a "rate-under-treatment" survey approach using the Developmental Disabilities Information Survey (DDIS). The results are based upon statewide data, derived from 36,334 cases, composed of 34% children and 66% adults. The findings revealed that the subject populations socio-demographics were consistent with those of the general population in the areas of age and ethnic distribution, but not in gender ratio. OBJECTIVES: The purposes of this study were (1) to identify disparities between adults with developmental disabilities and non-disabled adults in health and medical care, and (2) to compare this pattern of disparities to the pattern of disparities between adults with other disabilities and adults without disabilities.
METHODS: The authors compared data on health status, health risk behaviors, chronic health conditions, and utilization of medical care across three groups of adults: No Disability, Disability, and Developmental Disability. Data sources were the 2001 North Carolina Behavioral Ris

The NIH Toolbox Cognition Battery (NIHTB-CB) assesses crystallized verbal skills, and shows strong psychometric properties and sensitivity to developmental change in intellectual and developmental disabilities. However, whether gains in NIHTB-CB Crystallized Cognition reflect improvements in broader verbal abilities is unclear, and this has implications for clinical interpretation of the measure in the context of treatment studies. Two-hundred sixty-three participants completed NIHTB-CB Crystalized Cognition subtests (Picture Vocabulary, Oral Reading Recognition) and Stanford-Binet 5th ed. subt

Developmental regression is characteristic of Rett syndrome and it also occurs in a number of other developmental disabilities. To assist clinicians in identifying promising therapeutic approaches, we identified 38 studies that sought to improve adaptive behavior functioning in cases where developmental regression had either already occurred or was likely to occur. Studies were summarized in terms of (a) participants, (b) intervention, (c) dependent variables, (d) outcomes, (e) study design, and (f) certainty of evidence. The available literature included 136 participants from preschoolers to

Families are key sites where disability is lived and organized in everyday life, yet the social and care-related demands placed on families vary across disability contexts. This study examines how different developmental disabilities shape family functioning, adaptive processes, and inequalities in everyday care. Drawing on questionnaire data from one parent per family in 937 Spanish families of children with intellectual disability (ID), motor disability, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the study compares three measurement models of family functioning: the Family Adaptability and Cohesion

Food insecurity disproportionately impacts people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (PWIDD) and their families. This scoping review explores food insecurity in this population, considering prevalence estimates and disparities, consequences, risk factors, and protective factors. A systematic search identified 21 relevant sources. Food insecurity was consistently reported at higher levels among PWIDD compared to those without disabilities across sources. Consequences include worsened nutritional challenges, diagnosis-specific behavioral changes, and caregiver emotional distress. R

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Children with intellectual disabilities and related conditions (IDRC) and autism often require dental treatment in surgical settings. Studies of older adults suggest that ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) can reduce costs without reducing quality, but it is unknown whether this is true for children with autism and IDRC and dental surgeries. This study compared outcomes among children with IDRC and autism receiving dental caries-related surgeries at ASCs and hospital outpatient departments (HOPDs).
METHODS: This cross-sectional analysis used Medicaid data from 29 stat

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate how epilepsy and intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) affect contraceptive provision among females with Medicaid insurance.
METHODS: We obtained Medicaid claims data from 2016-2021 for females aged 12-51 years. We excluded individuals with diagnosis codes for menopause and those who underwent sterilization in 2016-2017. Using a validated definition of epilepsy, we identified females who met the criteria for epilepsy in 2016-2017, and we identified a comparison group of females enrolled in 2016-2017 who never met the criteria for epilepsy. We used Internatio

BACKGROUND: Low birth weight (LBW) has been linked to the risk of developmental disabilities. However, few studies have been large enough to assess the associations between children's mental health (anxiety, depression) and a comprehensive range of developmental disabilities in a large general children's population, and limited studies have examined dose-response associations.
METHODS: This population-based, nationally representative cross-sectional study included 35,379 children aged 6-17 years who participated in the 2022-2023 National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH) in the U.S from July

Oral health is an essential component of overall health for all individuals. The oral health of children and youth with developmental disabilities (CYDD) involves unique characteristics and needs of which pediatricians and pediatric clinicians can be aware. Risk for oral disease in CYDD is multifactorial and includes underlying medical conditions, medications, and ability to participate in preventive oral health care and treatment, and lack of access to providers is common for this population despite being eligible for Medicaid. Pediatric clinicians are uniquely positioned to support the oral
