Dementia is a frequent problem in elderly patients. More than age per se, it may influence the indication for invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to treat other diseases. Here, the role of tomographic imaging methods for differential diagnosis of dementia will be reviewed briefly, with the new possibilities that became available recently. Computed tomography (CT) of the brain is used primarily to detect potentially treatable conditions, such as multiple ischemic infarcts, hematomas, hydrocephalus and brain tumors. It should be performed even at higher age if the general condition of

Endometriosis is a prevalent gynecological condition affecting approximately 10% of women of reproductive age and up to 50% of those with infertility. It is characterized by the presence of endometrial-like tissue outside the uterine cavity. Despite its high prevalence, diagnosis is often delayed by up to 10 years from symptom onset, partly due to the historical lack of accurate, noninvasive diagnostic tools. Although major reproductive societies continue to define videolaparoscopy as the gold standard for diagnosing endometriosis, it does not reliably predict disease extent. Consequently, onc

CLINICAL/METHODOLOGICAL ISSUE: Imaging procedures are an integral component of the diagnostics and treatment of lymphomas for the initial diagnosis, staging and assessment of the efficacy of treatment. The different lymphoma entities show differences in metabolic activity and therefore require different examination modalities.
STANDARD RADIOLOGICAL METHODS: This review article focuses on the primary imaging diagnostics of lymphomas using computed tomography (CT), positron emission tomography (PET)/CT and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). It also discusses the special imaging features of the v

Clinical signs of an infection of the hand can be subtle initially or in a chronic state. But even in a progressive stadium it might be difficult to define an involvement of soft tissue, joint or bone. This review article addresses the diagnostic options of radiologic imaging. Radiographs of the affected region are the basic diagnostics. Sonographics provides information about an abscess or effusion versus diffuse edema and phlegmon. Both are in most situations promptly available. In chronic cases and unclear findings, MRI is of value. With bone involvement and an implant related osteomyelitis

Bone metastases are common, can cause a variety of relevant symptoms and are often associated with a poor prognosis. An early and accurate diagnosis is therefore crucial; however, the pattern is very heterogeneous and necessitates good knowledge of the possibilities and limitations of each imaging modality. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET/CT) have the highest sensitivity and specificity for detecting bone metastases. Gradient echo and diffusion-weighted sequences are valuable supplements to the MRI protocol in doubtful cases and MRI is

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHP) is a benign condition characterised by malignant potential. Even in specialist wards, 5-10% of operations for PHP are unsuccessful. The main reasons seem to be ectopy of the parathyroid gland, numerous adenomas, multiglandular parathyroid hyperplasia, and intrathyroid location of the parathyroid. The last three decades have witnessed a rapid progression in imaging diagnostics.

Craniosynostoses are the most frequent craniofacial malformations. However, with a prevalence of 3-6 cases per 10,000 live births they are amongst the rarely seen diseases and their definite diagnosis thus poses a challenge to the physician. When an abnormal calvarial configuration is detected, a radiological evaluation is necessary to characterize the deformity and to guide the corrective surgical procedure. The demand for clear diagnostic criteria is justified by the severity of the disease and the possible consequences of delayed diagnosis. In addition to the clinical signs (deformation of

OBJECTIVES: Reporting diagnostic confidence (DC) in axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) imaging is recommended by the ASAS guidelines. Our aim was to investigate whether self-reported DC predicts diagnostic accuracy in axSpA imaging using X-ray (XR), computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
METHODS: We performed a post hoc analysis including 163 patients with low back pain (89 axSpA and 56 non-axSpA). Nine blinded readers with different experience levels [inexperienced (<1 year), semi-experienced (3-8 years) and experienced (>12 years)] scored the sacroiliac joint images for

Conventional enteroclysis remains the method of choice in the diagnosis of inflammatory small bowel disease. The reported sensitivity rates, however, for the diagnosis of extraintestinal processes, such as fistulae and abscesses, are moderate. Computed tomography (CT) is the method of choice for the diagnosis of extraintestinal complications. The anatomical designation of the affected bowel segment may, however, prove difficult due to axial slices, and the applied radiation dose is high. The use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the diagnosis of inflammatory small bowel disease is a relat

BACKGROUND: Presentation of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in pregnant women in the Department of Diagnostic Imaging, Institute of Mother and Child, Warsaw, Poland.
MATERIAL/METHODS: Forty-three symptomatic pregnant women underwent MRI between 9 and 33 weeks of gestation (mean of 23 weeks). Moreover, we included 2 pregnant women who underwent fetal MRI and had incidental abnormalities.
RESULTS: In 9 cases, we excluded the suspected brain abnormalities. In 4 cases, we found unremarkable changes in the brain without clinical significance. One patient was diagnosed with multiple scle

This article concentrates on generalized disorders causing bone fragility. The most frequent cause of brittle bone disease is osteoporosis, only diagnosed by elimination. First, malignant osteopathy must be ruled out: fracture on metastasis or multiple myeloma, which mimics osteoporosis when presenting as diffuse demineralization. Second, patients should be screened for signs of hyperparathyroidism or osteomalacia. Much more rarely, many other pathologies can lead to brittle bone by demineralization or associated increased bone density. The radiologist needs to know the clinical context and not

Hepatopulmonary syndrome (HPS) is a serious pulmonary complication of progressive liver disease that leads to a poor clinical prognosis. Patients with HPS may develop acute respiratory failure, which requires intensive care and therapy. At present, the only effective treatment is liver transplantation; therefore, early diagnosis and timely treatment are of considerable significance. The three main features of HPS are liver disease, oxygenation disorder, and intrapulmonary vascular dilatation (IPVD). Diagnosing HPS is challenging due to the difficulty in detecting the presence or absence of IPV

Cancer patients need multimodal therapies to treat their disease increasingly. In particular, drug treatment, as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or various associations between them are commonly used to increase efficacy. However, the use of drugs predisposes a percentage of patients to develop toxicity in multiple organs and systems. Principle chemotherapy drugs mechanism of action is cell replication inhibition, rapidly proliferating cells especially. Immunotherapy is another tumor therapy strategy based on antitumor immunity activation trough agents as CTLA4 inhibitors (ipilimumab) or PD-1/PD-

Sarcoidosis is a systemic granulomatous disease of unknown etiology, and its clinical presentation depends on the affected organ. Cardiac sarcoidosis (CS) is one of the leading causes of death among patients with sarcoidosis. The clinical manifestations of CS are heterogeneous, and range from asymptomatic to life-threatening arrhythmias and progressive heart failure due to the extent and location of granulomatous inflammation in the myocardium. Advances in imaging techniques have played a pivotal role in the evaluation of CS because histological diagnoses obtained by myocardial biopsy tend to

Physical abuse is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in the pediatric population. Young children, particularly in the first year of life, are most vulnerable to physical abuse. To evaluate suspected physical abuse, radiologists play a vital role by detecting radiological findings suggestive of physical abuse and differentiating them from other pathologies. This review focuses on radiologic findings, including those for fractures, abusive head trauma, spinal injury, and thoracoabdominal injury, commonly discovered in physically abused children, with special emphasis on biomechanical

CLINICAL BACKGROUND: If pheochromocytoma (PC) or paraganglioma (PGL) is diagnosed based on serologic studies, imaging is required to locate the adrenal mass for further management. Besides pathognomonic hormonal findings, PC/PGL can exhibit typical imaging features. However, PC/PGL can also show morphological overlap with other pathologies.
STANDARD RADIOLOGICAL METHODS: The modality of choice for evaluation of PC is CT. In case of extra-adrenal location, MRI is superior to CT. Imaging with PET-CT provides complementary information in the differentiation of PC/PGL and is recommended as the im

A 68-year-old woman presented with weight loss of 7 kg over two years. Clinical examination revealed no specific abnormality and the patient was otherwise asymptomatic. Chest radiography performed to screen for malignancy revealed a soft tissue opacity projected over the mediastinum. Computed tomography of the thorax showed an enhancing anterior mediastinal mass with heterogeneous enhancement and contrast pooling in the arterial phase, followed by homogeneous enhancement in the venous phase, consistent with an aneurysm arising from the superior vena cava. This case highlights superior vena cav
