How patients with borderline personality disorder experience the skill opposite action in the context of dialectical behavior therapy-A qualitative study.

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is currently the most researched therapy method to treat borderline personality disorder (BPD). A major component of DBT is learning and practicing specific skills to regulate emotions. Qualitative studies found that patients perceived DBT skills as helpful in dealing with emotions. However, DBT consists of more than 60 different skills, and earlier qualitative studies had a broad focus. The present study explores patients' experience with a specific skill, opposite action (OA). The skill is one of the major DBT skills assumed to play an important role in sym

Field Test of a Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Training-Based Intervention for Smoking Cessation and Opioid Relapse Prevention in Methadone Treatment.

Objective: Almost all individuals in methadone treatment for opioid dependence smoke cigarettes, and half of people in methadone treatment have an opioid relapse within six months. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) skills training has shown promise for addressing substance use and a variety of health behaviors and conditions; however, it has never been evaluated for smoking cessation in any population. The objective of this study was to field test a DBT skills training-based intervention for tobacco dependence and opioid relapse prevention (DBT-Quit) among people in methadone treatment. Metho

Longitudinal Trajectory of Borderline Symptoms and Associated Problematic Behaviors Throughout a Standard 12-Month Dialectical Behavior Therapy in Adults With Borderline Personality Disorder.

A large body of research supports the efficacy of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) for the treatment of borderline personality disorder (BPD). This study examined the trajectory of symptomatology change throughout a 12-month BPD intervention in 152 outpatients with BPD who experienced active suicidal ideation. Borderline symptoms were assessed weekly by therapists and every 3 months by outpatients. Analyses of linear mixed-effects models revealed a significant effect of intervention on reducing the frequency of BPD-related behaviors evaluated by both therapists and outpatients. Completers ex

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy for Adolescents (DBT-A): a clinical Trial for Patients with suicidal and self-injurious Behavior and Borderline Symptoms with a one-year Follow-up.

BACKGROUND: To date, there are no empirically validated treatments of good quality for adolescents showing suicidality and non-suicidal self-injurious behavior. Risk factors for suicide are impulsive and non-suicidal self-injurious behavior, depression, conduct disorders and child abuse. Behind this background, we tested the main hypothesis of our study; that Dialectical Behavioral Therapy for Adolescents is an effective treatment for these patients. METHODS: Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) has been developed by Marsha Linehan - especially for the outpatient treatment of chronically non-

Changes in cognitive and behavioral control after lamotrigine and intensive dialectical behavioral therapy for severe, multi-impulsive bulimia nervosa: an fMRI case study.

PURPOSE: Adults with bulimia nervosa (BN) and co-occurring emotional dysregulation and multiple impulsive behaviors are less responsive to existing interventions. Initial data suggest that the combination of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and a mood stabilizer, lamotrigine, significantly reduces symptoms of affective and behavioral dysregulation in these patients. Identifying candidate neurobiological mechanisms of change for this novel treatment combination may help guide future randomized controlled trials and inform new and targeted treatment development. Here, we examined neurocognitiv

Trauma-focused dialectical behavior therapy: study protocol for a randomized controlled multi-center trial in online and face-to-face formats.

BACKGROUND: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a severe mental health condition that requires intensive psychotherapeutic treatment. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a specialized treatment approach for BPD with broad empirical evidence. However, as with other disorder-specific treatments, the effect sizes of the standard DBT approach are only modest and access to treatment is limited. To enhance the efficacy of DBT, we developed an adaptation called Trauma-Focused DBT (TF-DBT), which is based on the principles, treatment modes, and functions of DBT. The goal was to (i) condense and

Mapping Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills to Clinical Domains Implicated in Contemporary Addiction Research: A Conceptual Synthesis and Promise for Precision Medicine.

Recent addiction research has identified clinical domains that are central to the development and maintenance of alcohol use disorder (AUD). Yet existing psychotherapy approaches are not typically organized around these clinical domains and are often limited in scope. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is an intensive, multicomponent cognitive behavioral treatment that includes individual psychotherapy, group-based skills training, phone coaching, and consultation team for DBT therapists. Despite its efficacy on various mental health conditions, access to full DBT is often a challenge. In this

Investigating predictive factors of dialectical behavior therapy skills training efficacy for alcohol and concurrent substance use disorders: A machine learning study.

BACKGROUND: Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Training (DBT-ST) as stand-alone treatment has demonstrated promising outcomes for the treatment of alcohol use disorder (AUD) and concurrent substance use disorders (SUDs). However, no studies have so far empirically investigated factors that might predict efficacy of this therapeutic model. METHODS: 275 treatment-seeking individuals with AUD and other SUDs were consecutively admitted to a 3-month DBT-ST program (in- + outpatient; outpatient settings). The machine learning routine applied (i.e. penalized regression combined with a nested cross-

Sharing and connecting with others - patient experiences of radically open dialectical behavior therapy for anorexia nervosa and overcontrol: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Recovery rates after psychological treatments for anorexia nervosa are low to moderate, and in adults, no treatment outperforms any other. The aim of this study was to evaluate patient experiences of Radically open dialectical behavior therapy (RO DBT), a treatment developed for disorders related to maladaptive overcontrol. METHODS: Eleven female patients with anorexia nervosa were interviewed after either treatment completion (eight patients) or drop-out (three patients) from RO DBT. Interviews were transcribed and analyzed with inductive thematic analysis. RESULTS: The analysis

Adaptation and implementation of family-based treatment enhanced with dialectical behavior therapy skills for anorexia nervosa in community-based specialist clinics.

Although family-based therapy (FBT) is a well-established treatment for anorexia nervosa, its implementation and effectiveness in clinical settings has been neglected. A group of seven therapists at a community-based eating disorders clinic were trained in skills-enhanced FBT and provided treatment to 11 youth with anorexia nervosa. Family-based skills training, which borrowed heavily from dialectical behavior therapy, was introduced in four additional sessions and then integrated throughout the remainder of FBT. FBT was perceived as appropriate and acceptable by all participants. Therapists r

Dialectical behavior therapy for posttraumatic stress disorder related to childhood sexual abuse: a pilot study of an intensive residential treatment program.

Dialectical behavior therapy for posttraumatic stress disorder (DBT-PTSD) is tailored for adults with PTSD from childhood sexual abuse (CSA). It uses principles from DBT and trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral approaches. To evaluate acceptance and safety, the authors treated 29 women with chronic CSA-related PTSD plus at least one other comorbid diagnosis. The Posttraumatic Diagnostic Scale (PDS), Symptom Checklist 90-Revised, Beck Depression Inventory, and State Trait Anxiety Inventory were administered prior to, at the end of, and 6 weeks after 3 months of intensive residential treatment. Effectiveness of Eight-Session Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Classes for Reducing Symptoms of Anxiety, Depression, and Emotional Dysregulation in a Transdiagnostic Population.

Brief group-based psychological treatments are a common tool for increasing service access. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) skills groups have been used with several clinical populations to improve emotional regulation. This research aimed to examine the effectiveness of DBT-informed classes across four treatment settings in reducing symptoms of depression, anxiety, and emotional dysregulation, as well as examining participant factors associated with treatment responsiveness and class dropout. A total of 315 participants completed pre-post measures as a part of standard clinical care. Linea

Effectiveness of the family-based model of dialectical behavior therapy for both suicidal adolescents and young adults in an academic medical center.

BACKGROUND: Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is an effective approach to decreasing suicidal behaviors; the adapted, family-based model for adolescents (through 18 years old; DBT-A) also demonstrates efficacy. Data on higher dropout rates based on age, initial research on DBT with young adults in the community, and the theory that underlies DBT suggest that adaptations may also be appropriate for young adults. This study examines the effectiveness of DBT-A, presents preliminary data on delivering DBT-A to young adults (ages 18-26), and compares clinical characteristics, service utilization,

Targeting binge eating through components of dialectical behavior therapy: preliminary outcomes for individually supported diary card self-monitoring versus group-based DBT.

The current study examined two condensed adaptations of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) for binge eating. Women with full- or sub-threshold variants of either binge eating disorder or bulimia nervosa were randomly assigned to individually supported self-monitoring using adapted DBT diary cards (DC) or group-based DBT, each 15 sessions over 16 weeks. DC sessions focused on problem-solving diary card completion issues, praising diary card completion, and supporting nonjudgmental awareness of eating-related habits and urges, but not formally teaching DBT skills. Group-based DBT included eating
