Similar Muscle Recovery but Greater Soreness in Active Vegans on Low-Protein Diets Compared to High-Protein Omnivores Following Exercise-Induced Damage.

To assess whether a low-protein vegan diet is associated with differences in recovery from exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) in physically active individuals. Physically active vegans (n = 7) and omnivores (n = 7) underwent a lower-body muscle damage protocol consisting of five sets of repetitions to failure using the Smith machine squat and leg press at 85% of one-repetition maximum (1RM). Muscle damage and recovery were assessed at baseline, immediately post-exercise, and at 24, 48, and 72 h post-EIMD. Outcomes included serum concentrations of creatine kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogena

Consumption of a high-fat diet does not potentiate the deleterious effects on lipid and protein levels and body development in rats subjected to maternal protein restriction.

Maternal undernutrition may cause injuries in several organs of the offspring, as well as lead to diseases in adulthood. Obesity and/or the consumption of a high-fat diet may also induce metabolic and cardiorespiratory diseases. We hypothesized that the consumption of a post-weaning high-fat diet would potentiate the deleterious effects of maternal protein undernutrition. This study evaluated the effects of the association of a low-protein diet during gestation and lactation with a post-weaning high-fat diet on the biochemical and ventilatory parameters of rats. Male Wistar rats from mothers w

The Effects of High-Protein Diet and Resistance Training on Glucose Control and Inflammatory Profile of Visceral Adipose Tissue in Rats.

High-protein diets (HPDs) are widely accepted as a way to stimulate muscle protein synthesis when combined with resistance training (RT). However, the effects of HPDs on adipose tissue plasticity and local inflammation are yet to be determined. This study investigated the impact of HPDs on glucose control, adipocyte size, and epididymal adipose inflammatory biomarkers in resistance-trained rats. Eighteen Wistar rats were randomly assigned to four groups: normal-protein (NPD; 17% protein total dietary intake) and HPD (26.1% protein) without RT and NPD and HPD with RT. Trained groups received RT

Differential metabolic and endocrine adaptations in llamas, sheep, and goats fed high- and low-protein grass-based diets.

This study aimed to elucidate whether distinct endocrine and metabolic adaptations provide llamas superior ability to adapt to low protein content grass-based diets as compared with the true ruminants. Eighteen adult, nonpregnant females (6 llamas, 6 goats, and 6 sheep) were fed either green grass hay with (HP) or grass seed straw (LP) in a cross-over design experiment over 2 periods of 21 d. Blood samples were taken on day 21 in each period at -30, 60, 150, and 240 min after feeding the morning meal and analyzed for plasma contents of glucose, triglyceride, nonesterified fatty acids, β-hydrox

Comparison of the supplemental effects of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and antibiotics in low-protein and high-fibre diets fed to broiler chickens.

Two experiments were completed to compare the supplemental effects of yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae and sub-therapeutic antibiotics in high-fibre and low-protein diets for broiler chicks. In experiment 1, yeast was added at 1.5, 3.0 and 6.0 g kg-1 while penicillin, tylosin or neoterramycin were added at 150 mg kg-1 into different batches of a high-fibre diet containing 250 g kg-1 palm kernel meal. Saccharomyces cerevisiae and antibiotics increased BW, BWG, FCR, feed intake, carcass and breast weights above the control. Small intestine weight was reduced by antibiotics, while yeast caused a lo

Myeloid-specific fatty acid transport protein 4 deficiency induces a sex-dimorphic susceptibility for nonalcoholic steatohepatitis in mice fed a high-fat, high-cholesterol diet.

Newborns with FATP4 mutations exhibit ichthyosis prematurity syndrome (IPS), and adult patients show skin hyperkeratosis, allergies, and eosinophilia. We have previously shown that the polarization of macrophages is altered by FATP4 deficiency; however, the role of myeloid FATP4 in the pathogenesis of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is not known. We herein phenotyped myeloid-specific Fatp4-deficient (Fatp4M-/-) mice under chow and high-fat, high-cholesterol (HFHC) diet. Bone-marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) from Fatp4M-/- mice showed significant reduction in cellular sphingolipids in mal

High-protein diets and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease: A double-edged sword in liver health.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is among the most prevalent chronic liver conditions globally and is closely linked with a range of metabolic disorders. Recently, the high-protein diet (HPD) has garnered attention for its potential benefits in weight management and metabolic health; however, its impact on MASLD remains a subject of debate. This article provided a systematic review of epidemiological studies, clinical trials, and foundational research concerning the role of HPD in MASLD. It examined the mechanisms by which HPD influences liver metabolism, inflam

Obesity induced by a high-fat diet is associated with changes in the expression levels of Dnmt3b and Dnmt3l proteins in mouse testes.

Context Obesity, a metabolic syndrome that results in excess fat accumulation in the body, is one of the most common diseases today, and its molecular background remains unclear. Studies have shown that a high-fat diet-induced obesity can cause changes in gene expression by affecting epigenetics in germ cells. Aims Our study aims to show the changes in DNA methyltransferase 3b (Dnmt3b) and DNA methyltransferase 3l (Dnmt3l) in the testes of obese C57BL/6 mice fed with a high-fat diet. Methods The presence and quantitative differences of Dnmt3b and Dnmt3l enzymes in the testes of C57BL/6 mice fe

Liver fat scores do not reflect interventional changes in liver fat content induced by high-protein diets.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is common in Metabolic Syndrome and type 2 diabetes (T2DM), driven by energy imbalance, saturated fats and simple carbohydrates. NAFLD requires screening and monitoring for late complications. Liver fat indices may predict NAFLD avoiding expensive or invasive gold-standard methods, but they are poorly validated for use in interventional settings. Recent data indicate a particular insensitivity to weight-independent liver fat reduction. We evaluated 31 T2DM patients, completing a randomized intervention study on isocaloric high-protein diets. We assesse

Effects of dietary nonstructural carbohydrates and protein sources on feeding behavior of tethered heifers fed high-concentrate diets.

To describe the feeding behavior of growing heifers fed high-concentrate diets with different sources of protein and nonstructural carbohydrates, and to explain the ruminal fermentation pattern, 4 ruminally fistulated Holstein heifers (BW = 132.3 +/- 1.61 kg) were assigned to a 4 x 4 Latin square design with a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. Two non-structural carbohydrate sources (barley and corn) and 2 protein sources [soybean meal (SBM) and sunflower meal (SFM)] that differ in their rate and extent of ruminal degradation were combined, resulting in a synchronized, rapid fermentat

Increased excretion of a brain depressor amine in infantile coeliac disease and in healthy infants on a high protein milk diet.

Urinary excretion of piperidine, a heterocyclic pressor amine of gut bacterial origin and nicotine-like activity in the brain, has been estimated by a gas chromatography method in healthy men and women, in normal breast-fed and formula-fed infants and in infants with untreated coeliac disease. The excretion of piperidine cannot usually be detected during the first week of life. The amount present in urine increases upon weaning with higher excretion in formula-fed than in breast-fed infants at four to six months of age. When premature infants fed on human milk are weaned, the urinary content o

Carvedilol protects against hepatic ischemia/reperfusion injury in high-fructose/high-fat diet-fed mice: Role of G protein-coupled receptor kinase 2 and 5.

Hepatic ischemia/reperfusion injury (H-IRI) is associated with irreversible liver damage. The current study aimed to investigate the protective effect of carvedilol against H-IRI in high-fructose high-fat diet (HFrHFD)-fed mice and the role of G protein-coupled receptor kinase 2 and 5 (GRK2 and GRK5). Mice were fed HFrHFD for 16 weeks; then mice were subjected to 30 min of ischemia followed by 1 h of reperfusion at the end of feeding period. Carvedilol (20 mg/kg, i.p.) was administered 30 min before ischemia. To explore the role of GRK2 and GRK5 in mediating carvedilol effects, paroxetine (GRK

Persistent perinatal protein malnutrition and post-weaning high-fat diet induce metabolic syndrome and hepatic UCP2 overexpression in IUGR offspring.

INTRODUCTION: Adults born with intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) are at a significantly increased risk of developing metabolic syndrome. Postnatal nutritional patterns are critical modifiers of this risk. This study investigated the effects of different perinatal nutritional interventions on glucose/lipid metabolism and hepatic steatosis in IUGR offspring, and explored the role of hepatic uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2). METHODS: An IUGR rat model was established via maternal low-protein (LP) diet during pregnancy. Male offspring were divided into five groups with distinct diets during gesta

Andrographolide prevents high-fat diet-induced obesity in C57BL/6 mice by suppressing the sterol regulatory element-binding protein pathway.

Sterol regulatory element-binding proteins (SREBPs) are major transcription factors regulating the expression of genes involved in biosynthesis of cholesterol, fatty acids, and triglycerides. We investigated the effect of the specific SREBP suppressor andrographolide, a natural compound isolated from Andrographis paniculata, on the regulation of SREBP signaling by use of Western blot, reporter gene assay, and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis. In addition, the antiobesity effects of andrographolide were evaluated in C57BL/6 mice with high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity.

Oleuropein supplementation increases urinary noradrenaline and testicular testosterone levels and decreases plasma corticosterone level in rats fed high-protein diet.

The effects of oleuropein, a phenolic compound in extra virgin olive oil, on protein metabolism were investigated by measuring testicular testosterone and plasma corticosterone levels in rats fed diets with different protein levels. In Experiment 1, rats were fed experimental diets with different protein levels (40, 25 and 10 g/100 g casein) with or without 0.1 g/100 g oleuropein. After 28 days of feeding, the testosterone level in the testis was significantly higher and the plasma corticosterone level was significantly lower in rats fed the 40% casein diet with oleuropein than in those fed th
