OBJECTIVE: Dietary interventions to improve fibromyalgia (FM) symptoms reported conflicting results. This study aimed to treat FM patients with a gluten-free diet (GFD), alternated with a non-restricted gluten-containing diet, followed by a rechallenge of the GFD.
METHODS: Twenty postmenopausal women with FM and no history of celiac disease participated. A GFD was assigned for 6 months. This was followed by 3 months of a non-restricted gluten-containing diet and then a new GFD for another 6 months. At each visit, the widespread pain index (WPI) and the symptom severity scale (SS) scores were

BACKGROUND: Soybean meal (SBM) is a primary protein source in swine diets, but partial replacement with crystalline amino acids (AA) is commonly used to reduce dietary protein. Adequate dietary protein and energy are essential to support fetal development, milk production, and litter growth. However, crystalline AA are absorbed more rapidly than AA from intact protein, which may limit protein synthesis due to a lack of AA availability. Therefore, an experiment was conducted to test the hypothesis that feeding sows diets based primarily on corn, SBM, and no crystalline AA will result in improve

INTRODUCTION: Painful Diabetic Neuropathy (PDN) is a severe complication of diabetes, featured by intricate aetiology and multiple side effects of current therapeutic approaches. In recent years, the glymphatic system has attracted increasing attention for its role in PDN. This study investigated the regulatory effects and underlying mechanisms of Oxymatrine (OMT) on the spinal glymphatic system in PDN rat models, aiming to provide novel therapeutic insights for PDN.
METHODS: The PDN rat model was established by high-fat and high-sugar diet combined with streptozotocin (STZ) induction. The 50

BACKGROUND: The high prevalence of metabolic syndrome in low- and middle-income countries is linked to an increase in Western diet consumption, characterized by a high intake of processed foods, which impacts the levels of blood sugar and lipids, hormones, and cytokines. Hematophagous insect vectors, such as the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti, rely on blood meals for reproduction and development and are therefore exposed to the components of blood plasma. However, the impact of the alteration of blood composition due to malnutrition and metabolic conditions on mosquito biology remains und

Ammonia (NH3) emission from commercial poultry farms significantly contributes to atmospheric pollution, highlighting the need for effective mitigation strategies. This study investigated the effects of a low crude protein (CP) amino acid-balanced diet on performance, egg quality, nutrient digestibility, and excreta gas emissions in laying hens. A total of 252 Hy-line brown laying hens (43 weeks old) were randomly assigned to one of three dietary treatments for 12 weeks: 17% CP (control, CON), 16% CP (low protein, LP), and 16% CP supplemented with amino acids (LPS). The LPS diet was fortified

Obesity-associated insulin resistance plays a major role in the pathogenesis of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The accumulation of diacylglycerol (DAG), ceramides and inflammation are key factors that cause NAFLD. In recent years, the ketogenic diet (KD) has emerged as an effective non-pharmacological intervention for the treatment of NAFLD and other obesity-related metabolic disorders. What remains undetermined is how the KD affects DAG and ceramide content and insulin sensitivity in the liver. Thus, this research was designed to assess these variables, as well as glucose and fat

Obesity and related inflammation are critical for the pathogenesis of insulin resistance, but the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. Formyl peptide receptor 2 (FPR2) plays important roles in host immune responses and inflammation-related diseases. We found that Fpr2 expression was elevated in the white adipose tissue of high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mice and db/db mice. The systemic deletion of Fpr2 alleviated HFD-induced obesity, insulin resistance, hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, and hepatic steatosis. Furthermore, Fpr2 deletion in HFD-fed mice elevated body temperature, redu

Background/Objectives: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by deficits in social communication, restricted and repetitive behaviors, and sensory processing abnormalities, including food selectivity. Due to the lack of effective causal therapies, alternative approaches such as dietary interventions are increasingly being explored. This study aimed to assess the impact of dietary factors on the nutritional status of children with ASD. Methods: A total of 103 children (75 with ASD and 28 controls) were included. Nutritional status was assessed using bioc

The ketogenic diet (KD) is an established treatment for intractable epilepsy in children. KD has also become increasingly popular for weight loss, and it has shown therapeutic potential for treating neurodegenerative diseases. However, KD causes bone loss in epileptic children, and its effects on the adult skeleton are unknown. In the current study, we investigated the effect of KD on bone at different ages using growing (4-week-old) and adult (14-week-old) male C57BL/6 J mice. We also examined if KD-induced bone loss could be recovered via exercise. We hypothesized that KD would cause bone lo

Partial inactivation of glucokinase (GCK) is typically characterized by mild hyperglycemia and a favorable lipid profile compared to type 2 diabetes. Previous studies have shown that GCK activity influences serum lipid profiles in a diet-dependent manner; however, its role in hepatic lipid metabolism in the context of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) remains unclear. To address this, we utilized a newly established heterozygous GCK mutation knock-in mouse model (GCKMut) fed either a normal diet (ND) or a high-fat diet (HFD). Under ND conditions, GCKMut mice deve

Adherence to plant-based diets has significantly increased in popularity recently, with claims that they reduce the risk of non-communicable diseases. This study investigated whether high adherence to plant-based diets can reduce the risk of hepatic steatosis and fibrosis. In this study, 8516 participants from the Ravansar Noncommunicable Disease cohort completed a validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) to assess their plant-based diet scores. The study used the fatty liver index and fibrosis-4 index to predict hepatic steatosis and fibrosis. The plant-based diet index (PDI) was used to

Background/Objectives: An increasing number of apparently healthy individuals are adhering to a gluten-free lifestyle without any underlying medical indications, although the evidence for the health benefits in these individuals remains unclear. Although it has already been shown that a low- or gluten-free diet alters the gut microbiota, few studies have examined the effects of this diet on healthy subjects. Therefore, our aim was to evaluate whether and how a prolonged low-gluten diet impacts gut microbiota composition and function in healthy adults, bearing in mind its intimate link to the h

PROBLEM: A high-fat diet (HFD) predisposes animals to glucose intolerance, dyslipidemia and testicular oxidative stress, and impairs sperm production in rats. Quercetin is a flavonoid with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and lipolytic actions and is a potential supplement to combat the oxidative stress caused by HFD and its harmful effects on reproduction. This study evaluated the effects of quercetin supplementation at doses of 10 and 20 mg/day on reproductive parameters and testicular oxidative stress in Wistar rats fed a diet rich in pork fat and fructose.
METHOD OF STUDY: The rats receive

Hashimoto's disease is listed among the most common endocrine causes of obesity. As treatment of obesity in women with Hashimoto's disease is frequently unsuccessful, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of two different reducing diets and their influence on changes in thyroid parameters in female patients. A six-month observational/interventional study was performed on 100 women aged 18-65 years, previously diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease and obesity and receiving L-thyroxine. The women were randomly assigned to the test group (group A, n = 50) following elimination/redu

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Chronic overconsumption of a high-carbohydrate diet leads to steatosis and its associated metabolic disorder and, eventually, to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Carbohydrate-responsive element binding protein (ChREBP) and insulin regulate de novo lipogenesis from glucose. Herein, we studied the effect of reticulon-4 (Nogo) expression on diet-induced metabolic disorders in mice.
METHODS: Nogo-deficient (Nogo-/-) and littermate control [wild-type (WT)] mice were fed a high-glucose or high-fructose diet (HGD/HFrD) to induce metabolic disorders. The effects of Nogo small int

The objective of the current research was to evaluate transgenerational effects of maternal dietary energy and protein on growth, efficiency, and yield of broiler offspring. A factorial arrangement of treatments consisting of high and low ME and CP levels fed during the rearing and laying phases was used. The study was a final 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments, including broiler sex. Ross 708 broiler breeder pullets (n = 933) were fed diets containing 2,736 (HEREAR) or 2,528 kcal/kg ME (LEREAR) with either 15.3% (HPREAR) or 13.7% CP (LPREAR). From 25 wk, dams were fed a 15% CP

Early inhibition of inflammation suppresses the carcinogenic process. Aspirin is the most commonly used non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and it irreversibly inhibits cyclooxygenase-1 and -2 (COX1, COX2). Multiple randomized clinical trials have demonstrated that aspirin offers substantial protection from colon cancer mortality. The lower aspirin doses causing only minimal gastrointestinal disturbance, ideal for long-term use, can achieve only partial and transitory inhibition of COX2. Aspirin's principal metabolite, salicylic acid, is also found in fruits and vegetables that inhib

Various malignancies are reproducibly cured in mouse models, but most cancer immunotherapies show objective responses in a fraction of treated patients. One reason for this disconnect may be the use of young, lean mice lacking immune-altering comorbidities present in cancer patients. Although many cancer patients are overweight or obese, the effect of obesity on antitumor immunity is understudied in preclinical tumor models. We examined the effect of obesity on two immunotherapeutic models: systemic anti-CTLA-4 mAb and intratumoral delivery of a TRAIL-encoding adenovirus plus CpG. Both therapi

BACKGROUND: We previously reported that dietary intake of shiitake mushroom (SM; Lentinus edodes) decreased serum concentrations of polar lipids in male rats.
OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the dietary effects of SM on serum cholesterol-related and serum antioxidant indexes in rats of both sexes.
METHODS: Sprague-Dawley rats [38 dams and their offspring (20 males and 20 females/diet)] were fed diets containing 0 (control), 1%, 4%, or 10% (wt:wt) SM powder from gestation day 4 through to postnatal day (PND) 126. Biochemical indexes were monitored during the midgrowth phase (PNDs 50-66).
