[Assessment of Dietary Arsenic Exposure Levels and the Associated Health Risks in Chongqing City, China].

OBJECTIVE: To determine the levels of arsenic in food in Chongqing city, and to assess the levels of dietary arsenic exposure and the associated potential health risks in residents of Chongqing city. METHODS: By using the monitoring data on arsenic levels in food in Chongqing between 2018 and 2023 in combination with the local dietary survey data for Chongqing from the 2018 China Nutrition and Health Survey Program, and adopting the 2-dimensional Monte Carlo simulation, we made an estimate of the dietary arsenic exposure levels of Chongqing residents. The margin of exposure (MOE) method was a

Surveillance of veterinary drug residues in food commonly consumed in Singapore and assessment of dietary exposure.

Non-judicious and indiscriminate use of veterinary drugs in animal husbandry may result in accumulation of residues in animal tissues, and consequently in food for human consumption. The abuse of veterinary drugs presents a potential risk to consumer health, especially if the residue level is higher than the health-based guidance value (HBGV) such as the acceptable daily intake (ADI). Contamination of drug residues in food also promotes the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) which poses a serious threat to public health globally. There has been limited information on the occurrence an

Dietary exposure and risk assessment of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in the Republic of Korea: A nationwide study.

In this study, the dietary exposure to seven polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) congener groups, including 22 types of PBDEs compounds, through consumption of 80 food items in Korean diets along with their risk assessment has been investigated. To process this, the concentrations of the target PBDEs in samples of food items were measured. The consumption amounts of the target food items were derived from the results of the 24 h food recall interview of subjects who participated in the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) from 2015 to 2019. Thereafter, the estim

Community-driven research in the canadian arctic: dietary exposure to methylmercury and gastric health outcomes.

Indigenous Arctic Canadians have a higher prevalence of gastric neoplasms relative to North Americans of European ancestry. We investigated the hypothesis that low-dose methylmercury exposure from eating fish/whale increases the risk of gastric cancer in Arctic communities. We used intermediate endpoints from an established model of gastric carcinogenesis: intestinal metaplasia, atrophy, and severe chronic gastritis. During 2008-2012, we obtained gastric biopsies from participants of community-driven projects in 3 communities. In 2016, we collected hair samples to measure methylmercury levels

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers in food and human dietary exposure: a review of the recent scientific literature.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are a class of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) used to protect people from fires by reducing the flammability of combustible materials. In recent years, PBDEs have become widespread environmental pollutants, while body burden in the general population has been increasing. A number of studies have shown that, as for other persistent organic pollutants, dietary intake is one of the main routes of human exposure to PBDEs. The most recent scientific literature concerning the levels of PBDEs in foodstuffs and the human dietary exposure to these BFRs are her

Adverse health effects due to arsenic exposure: modification by dietary supplementation of jaggery in mice.

Populations of villages of eastern India and Bangladesh and many other parts of the world are exposed to arsenic mainly through drinking water. Due to non-availability of safe drinking water they are compelled to depend on arsenic-contaminated water. Generally, poverty level is high in those areas and situation is compounded by the lack of proper nutrition. The hypothesis that the deleterious health effects of arsenic can be prevented by modification of dietary factors with the availability of an affordable and indigenous functional food jaggery (sugarcane juice) has been tested in the present

Dietary exposure to methyl mercury and PCB and the associations with semen parameters among Swedish fishermen.

Dietary POP exposure have shown negative effects on sperm motility and sperm chromatin integrity, as well as an increased proportion of Y-chromosome bearing sperms. However, it has been suggested that in epidemiological studies investigating persistent organochlorine pollutant (POP)-toxicity, other pollutants occurring simultaneously may carry an increased risk of effects, which may obscure a clear interpretation of the role of POP toxicity. One such pollutant is methyl mercury (MeHg), which has been found in fatty fish from the Baltic Sea and as a consequence men with a high consumption of su

Neurochemical effects of chronic dietary and repeated high-level acute exposure to chlorpyrifos in rats.

Very little is known about the effects of chronic exposure to relatively low levels of anticholinesterase insecticides or how the effects of chronic exposure compare to those of higher, intermittent exposure. To that end, adult male rats were fed an anticholinesterase insecticide, chlorpyrifos (CPF), for 1 year at three levels of dietary exposure: 0, 1, or 5 mg/kg/day (0+oil, 1+oil, and 5+oil). In addition, half of each of these groups also received a bolus dosage of CPF in corn oil ("spiked" animals; 60 mg/kg initially and 45 mg/kg thereafter) every 2 months (0+CPF, 1+CPF, 5+CPF). Animals wer

Dietary exposure to genistein increases vasopressin but does not alter beta-endorphin in the rat hypothalamus.

Genistein is a plant-derived estrogenic isoflavone commonly found in soy-based products such as soymilk and soy-based dietary supplements for treating menopausal symptoms, for example. Vasopressin is a neurosecretory nonapeptide synthesized primarily in neurons of the hypothalamus and secreted into the bloodstream from the posterior lobe of the pituitary. The endogenous opiate peptide beta-endorphin is synthesized both in neurons of the hypothalamus and in pituitary cells, primarily of the neurointermediate lobe. It has been reported that exposure to 17beta-estradiol or diethylstilbesterol inc

Animal Dietary Exposure to Methylxanthines through the Inclusion of Former Food Products (FFPs) in Feed.

Former food products (FFPs) are increasingly recognized as sustainable feed ingredients. While nutritionally valuable, FFPs may contain cocoa-based confectionery, which is a source of methylxanthines such as theobromine (TB) and caffeine (CF) and can impact animal health. This study quantified TB and CF concentrations in 12 FFPs using HPLC-UV, evaluated FFP inclusion rates in animals' diets against European Union (EU) maximum levels (MLs), and dietary exposure against toxicological thresholds. TB levels ranged from 59.6 to 1147.1 μg/g and CF from 9.3 to 118.1 μg/g. All products, except one, co

Metabolic Dysfunction and Related Dietary Exposures in Relation to Pancreatic Cancer Risk: A Review of the Evidence.

Pancreatic cancer is a highly lethal malignancy with an increasing global incidence. Although metabolic dysfunction has been implicated in pancreatic cancer risk, the strength and consistency of evidence across different metabolic traits remain uncertain. Evidence for dietary exposures related to metabolic regulation is also less clearly established. This umbrella review synthesised evidence from systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and umbrella reviews evaluating metabolic dysfunction and related dietary exposures in relation to pancreatic cancer risk. Chromatographic analysis of dithiocarbamate residues and their metabolites in foods employed in dietary exposure studies-a review.

Dithiocarbamates (DTCs) belong to a group of compounds used as fungicides in food production and can be divided into three major groups. Since DTCs easily oxidise and hydrolyse in alkaline and acidic medium respectively, precautions have to be implemented during preparation/homogenisation and extraction of samples. As such, test samples are commonly prepared individually by cutting into small pieces just before the digestion of DTCs with a hot acid to give carbon disulphide (CS2) and the results are expressed as CS2 without any differentiation of individual DTCs. However, individual DTCs have

Impact of prepubertal exposure to dietary protocatechuic acid on the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis in rats.

Protocatechuic acid (PCA; 3, 4-dihydroxybenzoic acid) is a phenolic compound widely found in many edible fruits, vegetables, grape wine and plant-derived beverages. The present study investigated the impact of PCA on the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis of rats orally treated with PCA during the period of prepubertal development to adulthood. Protocatechuic acid was administered to prepubertal male rats at doses of 0, 5, 10, 50 and 100 mg/kg body for 45 consecutive days. The results revealed no treatment-related changes in the body weight gain and organo-somatic indices of the hypothalam

Specific Effects of Chronic Dietary Exposure to Chlorpyrifos on Brain Gene Expression-A Mouse Study.

chlorpyrifos (CPF) is an organophosphate insecticide used to control pests on a variety of food and feed crops. In mammals, maternal exposure to CPF has been reported to induce cerebral cortex thinning, alteration of long-term brain cognitive function, and Parkinson-like symptoms, but the mechanisms of these processes are not fully understood. In this study, we aimed to gain a deeper understanding of the alterations induced in the brains of mice chronically exposed to CPF by dietary intake. For our purpose, we analysed F1 offspring (sacrificed at 3 and 8 months) of Mus musculus, treated in ute

Interventions targeting child undernutrition in developing countries may be undermined by dietary exposure to aflatoxin.

Child undernutrition, a form of malnutrition, is a major public health burden in developing countries. Supplementation interventions targeting the major micronutrient deficiencies have only reduced the burden of child undernutrition to a certain extent, indicating that there are other underlying determinants that need to be addressed. Aflatoxin exposure, which is also highly prevalent in developing countries, may be considered an aggravating factor for child undernutrition. Increasing evidence suggests that aflatoxin exposure can occur in any stage of life, including in utero through a trans-p
