Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging of the ulnar nerve in cubital tunnel syndrome.

Diffusion-weighted images based on magnetic resonance reveal the microstructure of tissues by monitoring the random movement of water molecules. In this study, we investigated whether this new technique could visualize pathologic lesions on ulnar nerve in cubital tunnel. Six elbows in six healthy males without any symptoms and eleven elbows in ten patients with cubital tunnel syndrome underwent on diffusion-weighted MRI. No signal from the ulnar nerve was detected in normal subjects. Diffusion-weighted MRI revealed positive signals from the ulnar nerve in all of the eleven elbows with cubital

Magnetic resonance spectroscopy and diffusion tensor imaging in coma survivors: promises and pitfalls.

The status of comatose patient is currently established on the basis of the patient-exhibited behaviors. Clinical assessment is subjective and, in 40% of patients, fails to distinguish vegetative state (VS) from minimally conscious states (MCS). The technologic advances of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have dramatically improved our understanding of these altered states of consciousness. The role of neuroimaging in coma survivors has increased beyond the simple evaluation of morphological abnormalities. The development of 1H-MR spectroscopy (MRS) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) provide o

Postcardiac surgical cognitive impairment in the aged using diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac surgery is associated with cerebral dysfunction. While 1% to 2% of patients experience stroke, cognitive deficits are seen in more than half of patients. Given the high incidence of cognitive decline, it has become the endpoint of many cardiac surgery investigations. Because the elderly are at highest risk, this investigation sought to determine if there is a relationship between new ischemic changes demonstrated by diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) and postoperative cognitive deficit in older patients. METHODS: Fifty cardiac surgical patients (>65 yea

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy and diffusion-weighted imaging in intracranial cystic mass lesions.

BACKGROUND: The differential diagnosis of various intracranial cystic lesions is sometimes difficult on the basis of CT or MRI findings. Our objective was to evaluate (1)H MRS and DWI in the differential diagnosis of these lesions and in comparison with conventional MRI. METHODS: Fifty patients with intracranial cystic lesions (21 pyogenic abscesses, 23 tumor cysts, 3 epidermoid cysts, and 3 arachnoid cysts) were evaluated with conventional MRI, DWI, and in vivo (1)H MRS. Preoperative diagnosis of the lesions was based on the results of DWI and in vivo MRS. All DWI and (1)H MRS studies were p

Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging findings in a patient with cerebral syphilitic gumma.

Cerebral syphilitic gummas are rare entities, consisting of masses of granulation tissue that result from an exacerbated cell-mediated inflammatory response to Treponema pallidum, usually arising from the meninges of the convexity. Conventional magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography findings of cerebral gummas have been reported, but diffusion-weighted imaging findings have not been previously described. In our patient, magnetic resonance imaging revealed a juxtacortical lesion with nodular enhancement, moderately restricted diffusion, a dural tail, and surrounding vasogenic edema.

Correlation of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging with neuropathology in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

BACKGROUND: Although the diagnosis of Creutzfeld-Jakob disease (CJD) is straightforward in fully developed cases, a definitive diagnosis can be difficult early in the course of the illness. T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) signal abnormalities, and recently, diffusion-weighted MRI abnormalities, have been described in patients with CJD, suggesting the utility of MRI in the early recognition of CJD. OBJECTIVE: To correlate diffusion-weighted MRI signal abnormalities with neuropathologic changes in CJD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Diffusion-weighted MRI and neuropathologic changes of 2

[A case of medial medullary syndrome detected by diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging].

We report an 84-year-old woman with medial medullary syndrome diagnosed by diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). She was admitted because of left hemiparesis and hypesthesia. T2-weighted and diffusion-weighted MRI showed a high signal lesion at the right medial medulla oblongata 10 days after the onset. It is well known that diffusion-weighted MRI is useful for detecting supratentrial cerebral ischemic lesions in the extremely acute stage. However, to our knowledge, there have been only a few reports of diffusion-weighted MRI in patients with ischemic stroke of the medulla oblon

Time-dependent diffusion magnetic resonance imaging for the analysis of parotid gland tumors.

BackgroundDifferent parotid tumors differ in terms of treatment strategies due to their distinct biological behaviors. Time-dependent diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (td-dMRI) can characterize and quantify the cytological indexes, and then aid the differential diagnosis of various tumors. However, the value of td-dMRI in the analysis of parotid gland tumors remains unclear.PurposeTo investigate the value of quantitative parameters derived from td-dMRI in the analysis of parotid gland tumors.Material and MethodsIn total, 39 patients with parotid gland tumors were prospectively enrolled, in

11.7T Diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Tractography to Probe Human Brain Organoid Microstructure.

BACKGROUND: Human brain organoids are 3-dimensional cellular models that mimic architectural features of a developing brain. Generated from human induced pluripotent stem cells, these organoids offer an unparalleled physiologically relevant in vitro system for disease modeling and drug screening. In the current study, we sought to establish a foundation for a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based, label-free imaging system that offers high-resolution capabilities for deep tissue imaging of whole organoids. METHODS: An 11.7T Bruker/89 mm microimaging system was used to collect high-resolution

Diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging Microstructural Abnormalities in Multiple System Atrophy: A Comprehensive Review.

Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by autonomic failure, ataxia, and/or parkinsonism. Its prominent pathological alterations can be investigated using diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI), a technique that exploits the characteristics of water random motion inside brain tissue. The aim of this report was to review currently available literature on the application of dMRI in MSA and to describe microstructural abnormalities, diagnostic applications, and pathophysiological correlates. Sixty-four published studies involving microstructural investigat

Magnetic Resonance Image of Neonatal Acute Bilirubin Encephalopathy: A Diffusion Kurtosis Imaging Study.

Background and Objective: The abnormal T1-weighted imaging of MRI can be used to characterize neonatal acute bilirubin encephalopathy (ABE) in newborns, but has limited use in evaluating the severity and prognosis of ABE. This study aims to assess the value of diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) in detecting ABE and understanding its pathogenesis. Method: Seventy-six newborns with hyperbilirubinemia were grouped into three groups (mild group, moderate group, and severe group) based on serum bilirubin levels. All the patients underwent conventional MRI and DKI serial, as well as 40 healthy full-te

Pediatric skeletal diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging, part 2: current and emerging applications.

Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) complements the more established T1, fluid-sensitive and gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance pulse sequences used to assess several pediatric skeletal pathologies. There is optimism that the technique might not just be complementary but could serve as an alternative to gadolinium and radiopharmaceuticals for several indications. As a non-contrast, free-breathing and noninvasive technique, DWI is especially valuable in children and is readily incorporated into existing MRI protocols. The indications for skeletal DWI in children include distinguishing between

High-resolution diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging of the brainstem safe entry zones.

Operative management of intrinsic brainstem lesions remains challenging despite advances in electrophysiological monitoring, neuroimaging, and neuroanatomical knowledge. Surgical intervention in this region requires detailed knowledge of adjacent critical white matter tracts, brainstem nuclei, brainstem vessels, and risks associated with each surgical approach. Our aim was to systematically verify internal anatomy associated with each brainstem safety entry zone (BSEZ) via neuroimaging modalities commonly used in pre-operative planning, namely high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) a

Microstructural Changes in Absence Seizure Children: A Diffusion Tensor Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study.

BACKGROUND: Absence seizures are a subtype of epileptic seizures clinically characterized by transient alterations in states of consciousness and by electroencephalography indicating diffuse spike-wave discharges (SWD). Conventional brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is not routinely used to establish the diagnosis, but rather to rule out other diseases. The present study investigated tissue integrity in children with SWD epilepsy using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). METHODS: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-DTI was conducted in 18 patients with absence seizures and 10 control participan
