A double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of a new veno-active flavonoid fraction (S 5682) in the treatment of symptomatic capillary fragility.

The efficacy and safety of a new veno-active flavonoid fraction (S 5682) consisting of micronized diosmin (90%) and hesperidin (10%) have been studied in 100 patients with symptomatic capillary fragility in a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial. Treatment lasted 6 weeks and consisted of 2 daily tablets of either S 5682 or placebo. Patients were examined at weeks 0, 2, 4 and 6. Compared to placebo, capillary resistance, assessed by the negative suction cup method, was significantly higher in the S 5682 group at week 4 (219 +/- 10 mmHg versus 159 +/- 8 mmHg; p < 0.001) and week 6

Chronic venous insufficiency and the therapeutic effects of Daflon 500 mg.

Chronic venous insufficiency is linked to venous hypertension and forces of shear stress on the endothelium. Venous hypertension depends upon two forces: the weight of a column of blood from the right atrium transmitted through the valveless vena cava and iliac veins to the femoral vein, and pressure generated by contracting skeletal muscles of the leg transmitted through failed perforating veins. When valve failure occurs in superficial axial veins and perforating veins, the venous pressure in the veins and venules of the skin and subcutaneous tissue is raised. The skin changes in chronic ven

The Benefits of Micronized Purified Flavonoid Fraction (MPFF) Throughout the Progression of Chronic Venous Disease.

At the 2019 European Venous Forum in Zurich Switzerland, a symposium entitled "State of the art: benefits of MPFF throughout CVD progression" was held to discuss the developing treatment strategies for patients at all stages of chronic venous disease (CVD). At the early stages of CVD, management should be focused on preventing disease progression through lifestyle changes and conservative treatment; treatment can also include venoactive drugs (VAD) such as micronized purified flavonoid fraction (MPFF; Daflon®), which is the most well-known and most widely prescribed VAD in Europe. Efficacy of a 6-month treatment with Daflon 500 mg in patients with venous leg ulcers associated with chronic venous insufficiency.

AIM: Epidemiological data show that standard compression therapy for leg ulceration in chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) often fails to effectively improve patients' condition. This study assesses the contribution of Daflon 500 mg added to conventional therapy in the healing of hypostatic ulcers of CVI patients. METHODS: Patients of about 65 years were included, with ulcers > or = 2 and > or = 10 cm diameter on 1 or 2 limbs, Doppler ankle/arm pressure index > 0.9, and no recent history of skin graft. Controls (n=68) remained on compression alone while the tested group (n=82) also received Da

Optimizing the management of venous disease: Expert consensus from a multinational panel of phlebology specialists.

Chronic venous disease and varicose veins (VVs) are highly prevalent yet remain inconsistently managed despite existing guidelines, with variability in treatment selection, patient stratification, and use of conservative therapies. This multinational initiative sought to establish expert consensus on key clinical questions in venous disease management. A Delphi-like process involved 38 phlebologists from 15 countries across Europe, North Africa, and Central Asia. Four thematic workshops addressed interventional and conservative approaches for both chronic venous disease and VV. Twenty predefin

Micronized purified flavonoid fraction (MPFF): a review of its pharmacological effects, therapeutic efficacy and benefits in the management of chronic venous insufficiency.

Initially, the progression of chronic venous insufficiency is related to venous hypertension. The earliest complaints or symptoms, as well as vessel wall deterioration, valve restructuring, and, eventually, varicose veins, result not only from elevation of pressure, but also from a cascade of biochemical events related to both the macro- and the microcirculation. Thickening and remodelling of the venous wall are influenced by two parameters: abnormal shear stress and hypoxia that activate the endothelium first at the level of valve cusps and then in large veins. Hypoxia leads to activation of

The Most Severe Stage of Chronic Venous Disease: An Update on the Management of Patients with Venous Leg Ulcers.

Venous leg ulcers (VLUs) are the most severe manifestation of chronic venous disease (CVD). Due to their chronic nature, high recurrence rate and slow healing time, VLUs account for 80% of all leg ulcers seen in patients with CVD. VLUs impose a heavy burden on patients that reduces their quality of life; VLUs also represent a major socioeconomic impact due to the cost and duration of care. The primary medical approach to treating VLUs is local compression therapy in combination with venoactive drug (VAD) pharmacotherapy to promote the reduction of the inflammatory reaction initiated by venous
