The stomodaeal valve and adjacent cardia region of the alimentary canal of the phlebotomine sandfly Lutzomyia longipalpis have been studied using electron microscopy. With the scanning electron microscope (SEM), numerous pit-like structures of different sizes were found in the surface of the valve of male and female flies. Under the transmission electron microscope (TEM), the cells adjacent to the pores were shown to have numerous mitochondria and to lack neural innervation. It is suggested that the pit-like structures are probably secretory. A typical basiconic sensilla was found on the inner

Experimental studies were conducted to determine if hematophagous Diptera were capable of mechanical transmission of Rift Valley fever (RVF) virus to laboratory animals. All species tested (Glossina morsitans, Aedes aegypti, Aedes taeniorhynchus, Culex pipiens, Stomoxys calcitrans, Lutzomyia longipalpis, and Culicoides variipennis) mechanically transmitted the virus to hamsters. Mechanical transmission rates for G. morsitans ranged from 0-100%, with the probability of mechanical transmission positively correlated with initial viremia titer and negatively correlated with the time after virus ex

Nine Lichtenstein's hartebeest ( Alcelaphus lichtensteini ) were sampled for nasal bots ( Oestrinae ) in a woodland area of central western Zambia. Larvae of the genera Gedoelstia , Oestrus and Kirkioestrus were found in mixed infestations in the nasal cavities and paranasal sinuses. A maximum count of 252 larvae was recorded from one head but no obvious pathogenicity was detectable in this or any other hartebeest. The significance of these findings is discussed in relation to the host specificity of the nasal bots and to gedoelstial myiasis of domestic livestock in the area where they interac

Mosquito-vectored disease remains a significant global public health threat. One of the most significant barriers to mosquito control is the evolution of insecticide resistance and limited number of available insecticide classes. Isoxazolines and meta-diamides are two classes of insecticides targeting the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) channel, a target site currently under-utilized in mosquito adulticides. Topical assays were conducted on laboratory colonies of the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti L. (Diptera: Culicidae), and the common malaria mosquito, Anopheles quadrimaculatus Say (Dip

Male genital and non-genital structures that are specialized to contact the female during copulation have diverged rapidly in many animal taxa. Three hypotheses that provide different explanations for this trend are reproductive isolation, sexual conflict, and female choice. We tested these hypotheses in sepsid flies, which have been considered case studies of sexual conflict, as males grasp and hold the females' wings with their species-specific front legs before and during mating, and females seem to actively resist this hold. The reproductive isolation and the sexual conflict hypotheses pre

The genus Phortica (Diptera: Drosophilidae) includes five species of small flies in Europe. Phortica variegata, the zoophilic fruit fly, is the main vector of Thelazia callipaeda, a zoonotic parasite that is rapidly spreading througout Europe. Despite extensive studies on thelaziosis in animals and humans, there is limited knowledge about the geographical distribution and hovering activity of these vector flies. In 2023, 1,462 Phortica flies were sampled across 12 Spanish provinces, providing new records of Phortica variegata and Phortica oldenbergi. Surprisingly, P. oldenbergi, previously con

INTRODUCTION: Wireless communication connects billions of people worldwide, relying on radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF). Generally, fifth-generation (5G) networks shift RF carriers to higher frequencies. Although radio, cell phones, and television have benefitted humans for decades, higher carrier frequencies can present potential health risks. Insects closely associated with humans (such as mosquitoes) can undergo increased RF absorption and dielectric heating. This process inadvertently impacts the insects' behaviour, morphology, and physiology, which can influence their spread

Among species of the spear-winged flies (Lonchopteridae) there is remarkable variation in sperm size, with some species producing giant spermatozoa. With a length of 7500 μm and a width of 1.3 μm the spermatozoon of Lonchoptera fallax ranks among the largest known to date. In the present study body size, testis size, sperm size, and spermatid number per bundle and per testis were examined across 11 Lonchoptera species. Results are discussed in terms of how these characters are related with each other and how their evolution affects the resource allocation amongst spermatozoa. Based on some dis

Musca domestica (Linnaeus, 1758) is a muscoid species that is widespread throughout the world and acts as a mechanical vector of different enteropathogens primarily in underdeveloped countries. The adult and its immature forms are associated with decaying organic matter and can be seen visiting human corpses and animal carcass, and the larvae can also cause an infestation on human and animal wounds, feeding on the tissues. These characteristics make them have a forensic significance and, mainly, a great sanitary importance. This study aimed to analyze and describe morphological aspects of thei

The Aedes aegypti mosquito is the primary vector of dengue, yellow fever, chikungunya, and Zika viruses. Infection with the dengue virus alone occurs in an estimated 400 million people each year. Likelihood of infection with a virus transmitted by Ae. aegypti is most commonly attributed to abundance of the mosquito. However, the Arizona-Sonora desert region has abundant Ae. aegypti in most urban areas, yet local transmission of these arboviruses has not been reported in many of these cities. Previous work examined the role of differential Ae. aegypti longevity as a potential explanation for th

BACKGROUND: Phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) are haematophagous insects that transmit the protozoan parasite Leishmania infantum (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae), the main causative agent of both zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis (VL) and canine leishmaniasis (CanL) in the Mediterranean basin. Eight species of sand flies have been previously recorded in Romania: Phlebotomus papatasi, Phlebotomus alexandri, Phlebotomus sergenti, Phlebotomus perfiliewi, Phlebotomus neglectus, Phlebotomus longiductus, Phlebotomus balcanicus and Sergentomyia minuta. Three of them (P. perfiliewi, P. n

Several invertebrate surveys in Croatia conducted between 2005 and 2014 and including; e.g., Plitvice Lakes, produced 123 bycatch samples of Dolichopodidae (Diptera) from 68 sampling sites collected at 36 localities in seven counties. Seventy-seven were retrieved from emergence traps, six from pan traps and 40 were collected with sweep net and/or aspirator. They contained 420 dolichopodid flies that belonged to 64 species in 22 genera. Four species, Campsicnemus umbripennis, Hercostomus chetifer, Liancalus virens and Syntormon pallipes, accounted for over half of the yields. Contrary to most s

A southern house mosquito Culex quinquefasciatus Say colony was established from surviving late instars and pupae from a semifield evaluation on Natular XRG (a granular formulation containing 2.5% spinosad). The initial lethal levels ofNatular XRG against this colony were determined in the laboratory for the first-generation progeny (designated as F1). Selection pressure was applied at LC70-90 levels to 10,000-15,000 late third- and early fourth-instar larvae of each generation with Natular XRG. Susceptibility changes in response to selection were determined every other generation, where a gra

Lutzomyia longipalpis is the main species involved in the epidemiological cycle of visceral leishmaniasis in Brazil. This species shows a wide geographic distribution and belongs to a group that has 2 setae in the paramere with the curved tips towards the apex of this structure among other characteristics. Morphological characters in the genitalia of phlebotomines are essential for correct identification of species. The aim of this study was to report the finding of unilateral and bilateral anomalies in the paramere of L. longipalpis males collected in Várzea da Palma municipality, Minas Gerai
