Humans are occasionally inadvertently infected with dirofilariae, the zoonotic nematodes. We report two cases of human dirofilariasis in South Africa, an area apparently non-endemic for this infection. Dirofilariasis is frequently misdiagnosed, so increased awareness of this entity in areas that are non-endemic is essential for prevention of inappropriate investigations and invasive therapy.

Dirofilariasis is an endemic animal parasitic disease in the Mediterranean basin. Its occurrence in humans is rare; when it occurs, it is most often in cutaneous locations. We report two new cases of dirofilariasis of the breast in two Tunisian women, aged 32 and 45 years old. Both came from northern Tunisia and consulted for breast lumps. Clinical examination and imaging findings suggested benign tumors. After surgical excision, the pathology examination confirmed the diagnosis, based on the presence of Dirofilaria repens in the specimen. Dirofilariasis prevalence is probably underestimated b

Human subcutaneous dirofilariasis (HSD) is a rare zoonotic filarial infection caused by filarial worms of the genus Dirofilaria. In view, recent rise in human Dirofilaria repens infections in several regions of the world, is considered as emerging zoonotic infection transmitted to man by zooanthrophilic blood sucking insects. Most of the documented cases of human dirofilariasis recorded in India are ocular infections and very few cases of subcutaneous dirofilariasis have been reported. We hereby present a case of subcutaneous human dirofilariasis of forearm and also emphasize on increased awar

Dirofilariasis is a worldwide zoonotic infection that accidentally affects humans. It is caused by filarial nematodes of the genus Dirofilaria, which are transmitted by mosquitoes. Cutaneous dirofilariasis appears as inflammatory lesions that could be consistent with Wells' cellulitis. We present a remarkable case of human infection with Dirofilaria repens, causing both subcutaneous and pulmonary nodules.

Dirofilariasis represents a zoonotic mosaic, which includes two main filarial species (Dirofilaria immitis and D. repens) that have adapted to canine, feline, and human hosts with distinct biological and clinical implications. At the same time, both D. immitis and D. repens are themselves hosts to symbiotic bacteria of the genus Wolbachia, the study of which has resulted in a profound shift in the understanding of filarial biology, the mechanisms of the pathologies that they produce in their hosts, and issues related to dirofilariasis treatment. Moreover, because dirofilariasis is a vector-bor

A case of periocular dirofilariasis has been diagnosed in Iran. A 27-yr old female referred with a history of edema and redness in the left eye since 2 wk ago. On slit lamp examination, a moving thread-like worm was seen in the subconjunctival area. Two days later, a 126 mm long, live filaria worm was extracted from the lower lid subcutaneous tissue. The worm was diagnosed as, likelihood, Dirofilaria immitis on microscopic examinations. The present case suggests that D. immitis can cause periocular infections.

INTRODUCTION: Dirofilariasis is a zoonosis usually found in dogs and cats. It is rare in humans, who are dead-end hosts for the parasite.
CASES: We report 3 cases of subcutaneous dirofilariasis due to Dirofilaria repens, contracted in the south of France (Alpes-Maritimes and Corsica). In the first two cases, the dirofilariasis manifested as lymph node enlargement; in the third case, lung disease suggested a systemic diffusion of microfilariae.
DISCUSSION: Dirofilaria repens dirofilariasis is due to the transmission of microfilariae by some mosquito bites (Aedes, Culex, Anopheles, Mansonia, P

INTRODUCTION: Human dirofilariasis is a zoonotic infection caused by the filarial worm, Dirofilaria (Nochtiella) repens, whose primary host is the dog. This infection is on the increase over the past decade in Sri Lanka and the prevalence of canine dirofilariasis in the country is also believed to be high. We present here a study on public awareness of dirofilariasis and the prevalence of this infection in dogs in Negombo, an urban area that has a high domestic canine population.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the awareness of dirofilariasis infection among residents and study the prevalence of this in

A local case of dirofilariasis was first reported in a 70-year-old female in Magnitogorsk, Chelyabinsk Region, in November 2002. The primary diagnosis is atheroma of the skin of the forehead. A round mass having a smooth surface and slightly solid gray-whitish walls was surgically excised, which yielded a mobile rolled nematode measuring 7 cm in length and 0.8 mm in width. The parasitological diagnosis is an immature Dirofilaria repense female. It has been found that the female has neither dogs nor cats in her flat and she had not been left Mangitogorsk for approximately 18 years. A histologic

Human pulmonary dirofilariasis has been documented from many parts of the world, but not in Korea so far. We experienced a patient of pulmonary dirofilariasis who had visited a local clinic because of chest pain for 1 month. On chest radiograph, a coin lesion of 2 cm diameter and enlargement of the mediastinal lymph node were shown. An exploratory lung resection was done. Pathologically the lesion was a pulmonary dirofilariasis complicated with necrotic pneumonia, fibrosis, and infarction. At the center of the lesion, degenerated nematode sections with multilayered cuticle, thick musculature,

BACKGROUND: Oral dirofilariasis is a rare parasitic infection that can mimic common dental pathologies. This report presents a unique case where dirofilariasis was mistaken for an acute apical abscess, highlighting diagnostic challenges and the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration. CASE PRESENTATION: A 47-year-old male presented with a persistent, painless swelling in the maxillary anterior region (tooth 11). Initial history and radiographic examinations suggested an acute apical abscess following inadequate root canal treatment. However, during surgical exploration, a live nematode w

INTRODUCTION: Unilateral facial oedema may occur due to inflammatory, infective, or cystic pathology; patients often seek medical help at an early stage.
CASE REPORT: We report one such case caused mimicking a parotid abscess, caused by dirofilariasis.
CONCLUSION: Dirofilariasis is an emerging zoonosis and should be considered a differential diagnosis of atypical facial swelling. It is equally important for clinicians, radiologists, and pathologists to be familiar with the diagnostic characteristics to avoid misdiagnosis.

This report highlights an exceptionally rare case of the dirofilariasis presenting with eosinophilic pleural effusion. A previously healthy 44-year-old male presented with a 1-month history of chest pain and cough. Chest computed tomography imaging revealed the right-sided pleural effusion, along with thickening of the parietal pleura. Thoracentesis was performed, yielding an eosinophilic effusion. Bronchoscopy was unremarkable, and microbiological cultures showed no significant findings. A uniporter video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery was conducted, during that a pathological lesion on the p

Human dirofilarial infection usually presents as pulmonary coin lesion or as subcutaneous nodule. We report the case of a 60-year-old female presented clinically with swelling in the lower-outer quadrant of the right breast for 2 weeks. Ultrasound reported as atypical lesion suggest fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) correlation and follow-up. Clinical examination - subcutaneous nodule of size 2 cm × 2 cm presents in the lower-outer quadrant. Clinical suspicious of carcinoma was considered and FNAC was done. Aspirated pus-like material and adult worm about 4 cm in length were attached to t

Human dirofilariasis is a vector-borne helminth disease caused by two species of Dirofilaria: D. repens and D. immitis. The vectors of the helminth are mosquitoes in the family Culicidae. The definitive hosts of Dirofilaria are dogs and, to a lesser extent, cats. Humans are accidental hosts. Dirofilariasis has been reported in the territory of Russia since 1915. Sporadic cases of the disease have been reported occasionally, but the number of cases showed a distinct increasing trend in the late 1980s-early 1990s, when the number of cases reached several hundred in the southern territories of Ru
