Russell-Silver syndrome and nonverbal learning disability: a case study.

Russell-Silver Syndrome (RSS) is a rare genetic developmental disorder characterized by prenatal and postnatal growth delays and other physical abnormalities. Neuropsychological screening was completed with LP, a 20-year-old college male diagnosed at one year of age with Russell-Silver Syndrome. LP's history and test findings yielded a profile consistent with a nonverbal learning disability, with significantly higher verbal compared to nonverbal intelligence, deficient visual-spatial memory, fine motor coordination and motor planning problems, relatively greater difficulty in math compared to

[Progressive supranuclear palsy: a clinical, natural history and disability study].

We studied the clinical features, the natural history and disability in 47 progressive supranuclear palsy patients and brain imaging aspects by routinely performed MRI in a subgroup of 25. Unexplained falls together with atypical parkinsonism (symmetric, levodopa unresponsive without resting tremor) are good clinical pointers of the early diagnosis, since they occurred within the first year. Cognitive slowness and unspecific visual complains are also early symptoms, while usual cardinal signs such as supranuclear palsy are more delayed. Blepharospasm and eyelid opening apraxia as well as deep

A longitudinal study of abnormalities on MRI and disability from multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: In patients with isolated syndromes that are clinically suggestive of multiple sclerosis, such as optic neuritis or brain-stem or spinal cord syndromes, the presence of lesions as determined by T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain increases the likelihood that multiple sclerosis will develop. We sought to determine the relation between early lesion volume, changes in volume, and long-term disability. METHODS: Seventy-one patients in a serial MRI study of patients with isolated syndromes were reassessed after a mean of 14.1 years. Disability was measured with t

A study of the dental treatment needs of children with disabilities in Melbourne, Australia.

A selected population of children with disabilities in Melbourne, Australia, was studied with reference to their oral disease and treatment needs. A total of 300 children (aged 9-13 years), 150 attending special developmental schools (SDS) and 150 attending special schools (SS), received an oral examination and the parent/guardian completed a questionnaire. Six levels of function were defined, based on the child's independence for five self-care activities (brushing teeth, feeding self, dressing self, walking and performing toilet). The caries experience of children in the SS was lower than in

Health promotion needs of young people with disabilities--a population study.

PURPOSE: Few research studies have sought to examine the health promotion needs of young people with disabilities. This paper reports the association between self-reported disability and various health behaviours (tobacco and alcohol use, physical activity, sedentary activities) psycho-social outcomes and school satisfaction. METHOD: Cluster stratified random sampling was combined with a cross-sectional descriptive design to obtain 3918 school students attending year 6 (primary school), year 8 and year 10 (high school) throughout New South Wales (Australia), to complete a self-administered qu

Lack of disability in patients with chronic orofacial pain. a retrospective study.

Although patients with chronic orofacial pain are frequently disabled, the disability is not necessarily due to the orofacial pain: various other factors may contribute. This retrospective study investigated the possible relationship between reports of pain, fatigue, disease conviction (DC), and denial of psychologic factors as explanation of the suffering (P-S) and limitations in occupational, domestic, physical, social, and sexual activities. The subjects comprised 30 patients referred to the Facial Pain Diagnostic Group at the Karolinska Institute, School of Dentistry, Huddinge, Sweden. Non

A study on the effect of patient and community education in prevention of disability programme.

The effect of self-care learning by leprosy patients in prevention of disabilities was studied by adapting two strategies in two subcentres of a project in South India, one through patient education by trained field staff and the other through community education involving trained animators and health committees. One of the subcentres was taken as control where neither of the strategies was employed. In terms of results, though both the strategies were found to be effective in containing occurrence of new deformities among high risk patients and healing of trophic ulcers in hands and feet, str

Case study of language and numerical disability: A sequential processing deficit?

We report a case study of Christine, an intelligent 30-year-old woman with a developmental learning disability. Psychometric evaluation and extensive interviews revealed several findings: most notably, evidence of anomia, auditory processing problems, difficulty acquiring reading and spelling skills, and an extremely poor sense of number. In addition, Christine showed all four of the Gerstmann symptoms (left-right confusion, finger agnosia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia). We suggest that most, if not all, of these impairments may be explained in terms of a sequential processing deficit (e.g., Ba

Longitudinal study of hearing-disabled children. A follow-up investigation.

A group of 138 hearing-impaired children, 76 boys and 62 girls, at a median age of 13 years, range 7-17 years, born during the period 1970-80, were examined in order to ascertain the incidence of progressive hearing loss, and if presence of progressive hearing loss relates it to specific causes of hearing impairment. After a 5-year interval from the median age of 8-13 years, progression of the hearing loss was demonstrated in 2-6% of the children (depending on the criterion used). No relationship could be established between progressive hearing loss and specific causes of hearing impairment.

Screening for disability. An examination of the O.E.C.D. Survey questions in a Canadian study.

The objective of this study was to identify 25 questions suitable for detecting disability in the general population. The questions will ultimately be incorporated within larger surveys, and seek to identify the physical, social and emotional effects of illness. From a review of existing questionnaires, 64 questions were selected for trial; the OECD questions were among them. The 64 questions were tested in interviews with psychiatric outpatients and with physical medicine (rehabilitation) patients. For all cases an extensive assessment was made by the attending physician. Analysis of response

Advanced Meniere's disease. A study of 356 severely disabled patients.

A selected material of 356 patients with Meniere's disease, all severely disabled by paroxysmal vertigo, was analysed. The question under study was to what extent and in what way the severe vertigo is reflected in the caloric reaction and in the level of hearing. The caloric response, expressed as differences in right/left sensitivity, was reduced in 59% and exaggerated in 1% of the patients; in the remaining 40% it was normal. The median values for pure tone audiogram, speech reception threshold and speech discrimination score were 56 dB,60 dB and 54%, respectively. The hearing deteriorated c

Pain and Disability Following Exercise-Induced Injury in Prognostic and Intervention Studies: The Why May Be More Important Than the How.

OBJECTIVES: In preclinical prognostic studies, the description of expected outcomes during an informed consent process indicates that the extent of pain and disability experienced and recovery time is unknown. In intervention studies, the consent process suggests that pain and disability will definitely occur and a treatment provided. Our objective was to determine whether study design (prognosis or intervention) was associated with the severity of pain intensity and disability reports from a preclinical model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We pooled pain and disability outcomes from prognostic and

Systematic Review of Survival Analysis in Leprosy Studies-Including the Following Outcomes: Relapse, Impairment of Nerve Function, Reactions and Physical Disability.

Leprosy is a public health problem in South American, African and Oceanian countries. National programs need to be evaluated, and the survival analysis model can aid in the construction of new indicators. The aim of this study was to assess the period of time until the outcomes of interest for patients with or exposed to leprosy by means of survival analysis surveys. This review researched articles using the databases of PubMed, Science Direct, Scopus, Scielo and BVS published in English and Portuguese. Twenty-eight articles from Brazil, India, Bangladesh, the Philippines and Indonesia were in

Patients with sciatica still experience pain and disability 5 years after surgery: A systematic review with meta-analysis of cohort studies.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The clinical course of patients with sciatica is believed to be favourable, but there is conflicting evidence on the postoperative course of this condition. We aimed to investigate the clinical course of sciatica following surgery. DATABASES AND DATA TREATMENT: An electronic search was conducted on MEDLINE, EMBASE and CINAHL from inception to April 2015. We screened for prospective cohort studies investigating pain or disability outcomes for patients with sciatica treated surgically. Fractional polynomial regression analysis was used to generate pooled means and 95%
