AIMS: In a high-income country, Australia, it is unclear how raised systolic blood pressure (SBP) ranks among other risk factors regarding the overall and cardiovascular disease (CVD) burden, and whether the situation has changed over time.
METHODS: We analysed the 2019 Global Burden of Disease (GBD) data, with focus on Australia. We assessed ten leading risk factors for all-cause and CVD deaths and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) and compared findings with the Australian Burden of Diseases Study.
RESULTS: From 1990 to 2019, raised SBP remained the leading risk factor for attributable

BACKGROUND: Information about global and local epidemiology and trends of skin cancers is limited, which increases the difficulty of cutaneous cancer control.
METHODS: To estimate the global spatial patterns and temporal trends of skin cancer burden. Based on the GBD 2019, we collected and analyzed numbers and age-standardized rates (ASR) of skin cancer incidence, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and mortality (ASIR, ASDR, and ASMR) in 204 countries from 1990 through 2019 were estimated by age, sex, subtype (malignant skin melanoma [MSM], squamous-cell carcinoma [SCC], and basal-cell ca

BACKGROUND: How long one lives, how many years of life are spent in good and poor health, and how the population's state of health and leading causes of disability change over time all have implications for policy, planning, and provision of services. We comparatively assessed the patterns and trends of healthy life expectancy (HALE), which quantifies the number of years of life expected to be lived in good health, and the complementary measure of disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), a composite measure of disease burden capturing both premature mortality and prevalence and severity of ill

BACKGROUND: Measurement of changes in health across locations is useful to compare and contrast changing epidemiological patterns against health system performance and identify specific needs for resource allocation in research, policy development, and programme decision making. Using the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2016, we drew from two widely used summary measures to monitor such changes in population health: disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) and healthy life expectancy (HALE). We used these measures to track trends and benchmark progress compared with e

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Klebsiella pneumoniae are the principal pathogens responsible for fatalities due to lower respiratory infections (LRIs), which pose a significant global health burden. During 2020 and 2021, the COVID-19 pandemic substantially altered the pathogenic landscape of LRIs. However, the specific impacts on S. pneumoniae, S. aureus, and K. pneumoniae have yet to be clearly determined. This study aims to analyze the changes in disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) associated with LRIs caused by these pathogens from 1990-2021, with a part

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a neglected tropical disease predominantly affecting marginalized populations in resource-limited settings. It can lead to long-term deformities, disabilities, and reduced economic productivity. This study examines differences in Disability-Adjusted Life Year (DALY) and prevalence of LF across countries and regions and predicts future trends. Trends were analyzed based on demographic factors and epidemiological changes, and cross-national health inequalities in LF were quantified. Using data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021 database, this study evaluate

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has emerged as a pressing global health challenge, and tobacco exposure constitutes a major modifiable risk factor-particularly among middle-aged and elderly populations. However, a comprehensive understanding of the global burden of tobacco exposure-attributable mortality and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) in this demographic remains limited.
OBJECTIVE: This study is aimed at quantifying the global burden of deaths and DALYs attributable to tobacco exposure among middle-aged and elderly individuals with T2DM from 1990 to 2021. Simultaneousl

BACKGROUND: The epidemiological transition of non-communicable diseases replacing infectious diseases as the main contributors to disease burden has been well documented in global health literature. Less focus, however, has been given to the relationship between sociodemographic changes and injury. The aim of this study was to examine the association between disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) from injury for 195 countries and territories at different levels along the development spectrum between 1990 and 2017 based on the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2017 estimates.

Stroke remains a leading cause of disability and mortality globally, with pronounced burdens in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) due to demographic shifts, conflict, and varying healthcare access. This study analyzes temporal trends and sex disparities in stroke-related disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and deaths across MENA from 1990 to 2023, using Global Burden of Disease 2023 data, and extends projections to 2050 using Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA) modeling. Age-standardized rates of stroke DALYs and deaths were extracted for the MENA region and 21

BACKGROUND: Stroke in children is a global epidemic.
METHODS: Data on stroke, including incidence, DALYs, mortality, and associated risk factors from 1990 to 2021, were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study, 2021. Estimated annual percentage changes were calculated to evaluate changes in the age-standardized rates of incidence (ASIR), DALYs (ASDR), and mortality (ASMR), as well as trends by age, sex, and sociodemographic index (SDI). Projections of DALYs to 2050 were made.
RESULTS: In 2021, there were 310,133 incident stroke cases, accounting for 24,807 deaths and 2,414,655

Stroke remains the second-leading cause of death and the third-leading cause of death and disability combined (as expressed by disability-adjusted life-years lost - DALYs) in the world. The estimated global cost of stroke is over US$721 billion (0.66% of the global GDP). From 1990 to 2019, the burden (in terms of the absolute number of cases) increased substantially (70.0% increase in incident strokes, 43.0% deaths from stroke, 102.0% prevalent strokes, and 143.0% DALYs), with the bulk of the global stroke burden (86.0% of deaths and 89.0% of DALYs) residing in lower-income and lower-middle-in

INTRODUCTION: The burden of ischaemic stroke in Europe has evolved over recent decades, shaped by changes in prevention, acute care and population ageing. Understanding long-term trends in mortality and disability is essential for guiding policy and service planning.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Using Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2023 estimates, we analysed age-standardised disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), years of life lost (YLLs) and years lived with disability (YLDs) for ischaemic stroke across all European countries from 1990 to 2023. We estimated country-specific annual percentage chan
