Racial discrimination and health among two generations of African American couples.

The current study extends research on the detrimental health implications of racial discrimination by examining how these implications reverberate across romantic relationships. Using two generations of different-gender romantic couples from the Family and Community Health Study, we examined how racial discrimination experienced by a romantic partner was associated with poor health among Black adults, independent of one's own level of racial discrimination. Results from the actor-partner interdependence model showed that beyond the effects of socioeconomic status, health behavior, relationship

Modulation of the discriminative stimulus produced by pentylenetetrazol by centrally administered drugs.

Pentylenetetrazol is anxiogenic in humans and produces an interoceptive discriminative stimulus in rats which is mimicked by anxiogenic drugs and other treatments and antagonized by anxiolytic drugs. It was proposed that the discriminative stimulus of pentylenetetrazol originates centrally. This hypothesis was tested by injecting small amounts of anxiogenic or anxiolytic drugs into the brain and comparing their ability to mimic or block, respectively, the response to pentylenetetrazol, observed after systemic injection. Food-restricted rats were trained in a two-lever operant task to discrimin

Racial discrimination as race-based trauma, coping strategies, and dissociative symptoms among emerging adults.

OBJECTIVE: The race-based traumatic stress theory (Carter, 2007) suggests that some racial- and ethnic-minority individuals experience racial discrimination as psychological trauma, as it may elicit a response comparable to posttraumatic stress. In the present study, we examined this further by determining the relation between racial discrimination and dissociation, a common response to trauma exposure. Further, we examined whether active coping strategies specifically employed to cope with racial discrimination related to less dissociative symptomatology. METHOD: The predominant racial- and

Hippocampal Volume Moderates the Link between Racial-Ethnic Discrimination and Early Adolescent Depression.

Adolescent depression has risen sharply, especially among racial-ethnic minority youth. While racial-ethnic discrimination is known to be linked with depression, there is limited understanding of how individual differences in brain development contribute to this process. Drawing on the framework of adolescent neurobiological susceptibility, this study examined the moderating role of hippocampal volume in the longitudinal association between racial-ethnic discrimination and adolescent depression. Using longitudinal data of racial-ethnic minority youth from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Develop

A systematic review of the voice-tagging hypothesis of speech-in-noise perception.

The voice-tagging hypothesis claims that individuals who better represent pitch information in a speaker's voice, as measured with the frequency following response (FFR), will be better at speech-in-noise perception. The hypothesis has been provided to explain how music training might improve speech-in-noise perception. This paper reviews studies that are relevant to the voice-tagging hypothesis, including studies on musicians and nonmusicians. Most studies on musicians show greater f0 amplitude compared to controls. Most studies on nonmusicians do not show group differences in f0 amplitude. A

Linear mechanisms can produce motion sharpening.

Human observers are not normally conscious of blur from moving objects [Nature 284 (1980) 164]. Several recent reports have even shown that blurred images appear sharper when drifting than when stationary and have suggested different non-linear mechanisms to explain this phenomenon [Vision Res. 36 (1996) 2729; Vision Res. 38 (1998) 2099]. We demonstrate here that even though distortions of drifting narrow-band sine-wave gratings cannot be explained by linear mechanisms, these mechanisms may have an important role in sharpening of moving edges. We show first that the effective spatial filter fo

Sensitivity of pentylenetetrazol discrimination increased by a stimulus fading technique.

The interoceptive stimulus produced by pentylenetetrazol (PTZ) is pharmacologically similar to anxiety and is used in a behavioral assay for anxiety-related stimuli (the PTZ model of anxiety). The stimulus fading technique was tested as a method to increase the sensitivity of this assay. Rats were trained with food-reward to press one lever after injection of PTZ and an alternate lever after saline. Rats initially learned the discrimination at a PTZ dose of 20 mg/kg. They were then trained with sequentially lower doses until they reliably discriminated a PTZ dose of 10 mg/kg. Substitution test

Early stages of tactual matching.

Naive sighted subjects tested under blind conditions were able to match raised dot (Braille letters) patterns relatively accurately by touch, but showed no advantage in judging identical pairs over different pairs of patterns. This was the case also for letters subjects had been taught to name. Instructions to match on name or feel had significant effects, but these did not relate differentially to "same"/"different" judgments. Under visual conditions subjects matched "same" letters faster than "different" letters. Errors in drawing the letters after tactual exposure and naming training showed

Cross-border ties and Arab American mental health.

Due to increasing discrimination and marginalization, Arab Americans are at a greater risk for mental health disorders. Social networks that include ties to the country of origin could help promote mental well-being in the face of discrimination. The role of countries of origin in immigrant mental health receives little attention compared to adjustment in destination contexts. This study addresses this gap by analyzing the relationship between nativity, cross-border ties, and psychological distress and happiness for Arab Americans living in the greater Detroit Metropolitan Area (N = 896). An empirical three-dimensional metric field for color space.

A complete empirical characterization of color discrimination in three dimensions has long remained out of reach. Classical studies, beginning with MacAdam's ellipses, provided local measurements in restricted chromatic planes, but a spatially dense and internally consistent mapping of discrimination structure across full color space has not yet been achieved. Here, we present such a systematic three-dimensional measurement of color discrimination in the standardized sRGB stimulus space. Eight observers measured discrimination regions at 35 reference colors distributed on a body-centered cubic

A parametric analysis of varying levels of consequence-based procedural fidelity errors when learning new tasks.

Procedural fidelity is the extent to which procedures are implemented as prescribed. Fidelity errors involving the delivery of consequences can have detrimental effects during discrimination training. This study consisted of a human-operant evaluation of how varying levels of fidelity errors involving consequences may affect performance on an arbitrary computerized matching-to-sample task. We investigated how implementing the task with varying levels of fidelity may affect learning and how initially exposing learners to varying levels of fidelity affects ongoing performance once errors were co

Optimizing linked perceptual class formation and transfer of function.

A linked perceptual class consists of two distinct perceptual classes, A' and B', the members of which have become related to each other. For example, a linked perceptual class might be composed of many pictures of a woman (one perceptual class) and the sounds of that woman's voice (the other perceptual class). In this case, any sound of the woman's voice would occasion the selection of any picture of the woman and vice versa. In addition, after learning to name the woman in the presence of one picture, that name would be uttered when presented with all of the images of the woman's face and al

A disorder of lightness discrimination in a case of visual form agnosia.

Benson and Greenberg (1969) described an "agnosic" patient whose severe visual recognition disorder could be accounted for in terms of a deficit in the perception of shape. We report here on a recent case of this disorder (visual form agnosia), and have found that she performs very poorly on tasks of discriminating shades of grey, although she is able to discriminate between hues. This sensory deficit helps to explain some of her perceptual difficulties; it also provides further evidence for parallel feature-processing in the human brain complementary to and consistent with recent physiologica

Discriminable effects of benzodiazepines.

In a shock-escape T-maze task, rats rapidly discriminated diazepam, flurazepam and chloridazepoxide from no drug. The discriminable effects of these benzodiazepines were not completely interchangeable with those of barbiturate anesthetics. The dose-response curve for diazepam asymptoted over the range 15 to 100 mg/kg, ip whereas dose-response curves for flurazepam and chloridazepoxide were more linear.

Empirical Investigation of a Model of Sexual Minority Specific and General Risk Factors for Intimate Partner Violence among Lesbian Women.

OBJECTIVE: This study proposed and tested the first conceptual model of sexual minority specific (discrimination, internalized homophobia) and more general risk factors (perpetrator and partner alcohol use, anger, relationship satisfaction) for intimate partner violence among partnered lesbian women. METHOD: Self-identified lesbian women (N=1048) were recruited from online market research panels. Participants completed an online survey that included measures of minority stress, anger, alcohol use and alcohol-related problems, relationship satisfaction, psychological aggression, and physical v
