Depression and Quality of Life in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis: The Impact of Self-Disgust.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) significantly impairs patients' quality of life. Psychological factors such as depression and self-disgust have been shown to be associated with quality of life; however, their interactions and combined effects remain unclear. Moreover, the level of self-disgust among Chinese patients with RA has not yet been investigated. OBJECTIVE: To examine the mediating effects of self-disgust in the relationship between depression and quality of life among patients with RA, and to provide a reference for clinical practice aimed at improving patients' quality of life

No Biased Attention to Threat, Incompleteness, and Disgust in Youth with OCD and Anxiety Disorders.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and anxiety disorders are early-onset mental disorders characterized by selective attention and strong emotional reactions. Attentional bias has been proposed to play a role in the development, onset, and maintenance of the disorders, but few studies have included youth with mental disorders, and no study has included more than one clinical group, making it unclear whether biased attention is disorder-specific or transdiagnostic in nature. In the present study, 65 youths with OCD (Mage = 13.6 [2.4], 57% girls), 52 youths with anxiety disorders (Mage = 14.5 [

The Impact of Disgusting Sounds on Pupil Diameter of Misophonic and Non-Misophonic Listeners.

Everyday sounds can elicit a range of emotional and physiological responses. For individuals with misophonia, some sounds can produce strong feelings of disgust, annoyance, and anger, often accompanied by increased perspiration and heart rate. Presently, methods of diagnosing misophonia rely on clinical interviews and self-assessment scales. Coupling these subjective measures with an objective, physiological method like pupillometry may lead to improved understanding of misophonia and inform efficacy of treatments. Previous studies show that both unpleasant and pleasant sounds increase pupil d

Temporal Processing of Joyful and Disgusting Food Pictures by Women With an Eating Disorder.

The present study used the presentation of food pictures and judgements about their duration to assess the emotions elicited by food in women suffering from an eating disorder (ED). Twenty-three women diagnosed with an ED, namely anorexia (AN) or bulimia nervosa (BN), and 23 healthy controls (HC) completed a temporal bisection task and a duration discrimination task. Intervals were marked with emotionally pre-rated pictures of joyful and disgusting food, and pictures of neutral objects. The results showed that, in the bisection task, AN women overestimated the duration of food pictures in comp

Disgust Sensitivity Accounts for Some But Not All Gender Differences in Death Attitudes.

The present study investigated whether gender differences in death attitudes could be attributable to social desirability, locus of control, and disgust sensitivity. A total of 238 university students completed the Multidimensional Fear of Death Scale and the Revised Death Attitude Profile in addition to measures of social desirability, locus of control, and disgust sensitivity. Women scored higher than men on many of the fear dimensions and also on approach and escape acceptance. There were no gender differences on locus of control or social desirability, but women reported more disgust sensi

Preliminary evidence for a unique role of disgust-based conditioning in posttraumatic stress.

Independent lines of evidence have linked posttraumatic stress symptomatology to both peritraumatic disgust (i.e., disgust experienced during a traumatic event) and posttraumatic disgust reactivity in response to traumatic event cues among individuals exposed to traumatic events. Much of this work suggests disgust, defined as a rejection/revulsion response aimed at distancing oneself from a potential source of contamination, may be important in understanding the nature of posttraumatic stress reactions even after accounting for the more frequently studied affective states of fear and anxiety.

Orienting and maintenance of gaze in contamination fear: Biases for disgust and fear cues.

The present study examines the extent to which attentional biases in contamination fear commonly observed in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are specific to disgust or fear cues, as well as the components of attention involved. Eye tracking was used to provide greater sensitivity and specificity than afforded by traditional reaction time measures of attention. Participants high (HCF; n = 23) and low (LCF; n = 25) in contamination fear were presented with disgusted, fearful, or happy faces paired with neutral faces for 3 s trials. Evidence of both vigilance and maintenance-based biases for

A taxometric study of the latent structure of disgust sensitivity: converging evidence for dimensionality.

Disgust sensitivity has recently been implicated as a specific vulnerability factor for several anxiety-related disorders. However, it is not clear whether disgust sensitivity is a dimensional or categorical phenomenon. The present study examined the latent structure of disgust by applying three taxometric procedures (maximum eigenvalue, mean above minus below a cut, and latent-mode factor analysis) to data collected from 2 large nonclinical samples on 2 different measures of disgust sensitivity. Disgust sensitivity in the first sample (n=1,153) was operationalized by disgust reactions to food

Evaluative learning and emotional responding to fearful and disgusting stimuli in spider phobia.

The present study explores possible changes between spider phobics (N=22) and nonphobics (N=28) in fear, disgust, and neutral ratings of neutral expressions as a result of their pairing with spiders. No statistically significant differences were detected between pre and post fear ratings of the expressions as a result of their association with spiders. However, post disgust ratings were marginally higher than pre disgust ratings and post neutral ratings were significantly lower than pre neutral ratings. The present study also examined differences in fear and disgust responding to threat-releva

The structure of disgust: domain specificity in relation to contamination ideation and excessive washing.

The primary goal of the present study was to employ confirmatory factor analysis to compare two theoretical models regarding the factor structure of disgust (N=307). The two-factor model of Animal Reminder and Core disgust proposed by Rozin et al. (2000) demonstrated superior model fit over a one-factor model that has been implicated in prior research. However, contrary to theoretical predictions, categorizing Hygiene disgust as Core disgust rather than Animal Reminder disgust provided an overall better fit for the two-factor model. The second aim of the study was to investigate the relationsh

Disgust vulnerability and symptoms of contamination-based OCD: descriptive tests of incremental specificity.

The present investigation examines the incremental association between disgust propensity and sensitivity and contamination-based obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms. Structural equation modeling in Study 1 indicated that general disgust was related to contamination fear even when controlling for negative affect in a nonclinical sample. Evidence was also found for a model in which the effect of negative affect on contamination fear is mediated by general disgust. Study 1 also showed that both disgust sensitivity and disgust propensity uniquely predicted contamination fear when control

Ageism and Quality of Life in Older Adults: The Roles of Self-Disgust and Psychological Distress.

This study examined psychological correlates of quality of life (QoL) among older adults in a Latin American context, focussing on the roles of ageism, self-disgust, and psychological distress. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses were used to examine the incremental contribution of sociodemographic factors, three dimensions of ageism, self-disgust, and psychological distress to QoL among 272 Colombian older adults (mean age = 68.40, SD = 6.80). Findings indicated that interpersonal experiences of ageism, but not exposure to ageist messages or self-ageism, were associated with poorer QoL.

A network analysis of disgust proneness in a clinical, adolescent sample: Implications for the treatment of OCD.

Although disgust proneness has been implicated in the development of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), studies to date have failed to identify the core symptom of disgust proneness that may be most strongly associated with OCD and its treatment. Accordingly, we used network analysis to examine which symptoms are most central to disgust proneness and the extent to which such symptoms predicted OCD symptoms before and after treatment. Adolescent participants (N = 434) in a residential treatment program for severe OCD, anxiety, and mood disorders completed pre- and post-treatment measures of O

Enhanced disgust generalization in obsessive-compulsive disorder is related to insula and putamen hyperactivity.

BACKGROUND: Compulsive cleaning is a characteristic symptom of a particular subtype of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and is often accompanied by intense disgust. While overgeneralization of threat is a key factor in the development of obsessive-compulsive symptoms, previous studies have primarily focused on fear generalization and have rarely examined disgust generalization. A systematic determination of the behavioral and neural mechanisms underlying disgust generalization in individuals with contamination concern is crucial for enhancing our understanding of OCD. METHOD: In this study

Parietofrontal Networks Mediate Contextual Influences in the Appraisal of Pain and Disgust Facial Expressions.

We appraise other people's emotions by combining multiple sources of information, including somatic facial/body reactions and the surrounding context. Wealthy literature revealed how people take into account contextual information in the interpretation of facial expressions, but the mechanisms mediating such influence still need to be duly investigated. Across two experiments, we mapped the neural representations of distinct (but comparably unpleasant) negative states, pain, and disgust, as conveyed by naturalistic facial expressions or contextual sentences. Negative expressions led to shared

Disgust drivers do not impact on the altered body in action representation in anorexia nervosa.

Disgust is a powerful emotion that evolved to protect us from contamination and diseases; it also cores to very human feelings, such as shame. In anorexia nervosa, most of the knowledge on disgust regards food. However, disgust can be elicited by varied drivers, including body-related self-disgust, which may be more central to this condition. Here, we investigate in depth how disgust triggers related to the body influence altered representations in anorexia nervosa. Women with anorexia nervosa and healthy women performed the Hand Laterality Task, in which they were asked to judge the lateralit

The role of disgust propensity and sensitivity on sexual excitations and inhibition in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Sexuality is understudied in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). According to the Dual Control Model, low sexual excitation (SE) and high sexual inhibition (SI) are indicative of a higher probability of experiencing a sexual dysfunction. The present study investigated SE and SI in OCD patients compared with controls. It was hypothesized that OCD patients report lower SE and higher SI than controls. Given their potential role as inhibitors of sexual response, it was hypothesized that in the OCD group higher disgust propensity/sensitivity, contamination/washing symptoms, unacceptable thoughts,

Cross-cultural validation of the short version of the Food Disgust Scale in ten countries.

The cross-cultural testing of scales represents an important step in the scale validation process. The present study evaluated whether the eight-item short version of the recently developed Food Disgust Scale (FDS-short) is a reliable and valid tool for measuring food disgust sensitivity in ten countries: Australia, China, England, France, Germany, Mexico, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, and the USA. In an online survey, the participants (N = 6128) answered items from the FDS-short and other scales related to (food) disgust sensitivity so as to test the construct and criterion validity of the FDS

An initial investigation of the unique relationship between disgust propensity and body dysmorphic disorder.

Disgust is a universal emotion that has received recent empirical attention for its potential role in various forms of psychopathology. We conducted two studies using varying methods to explore the relationship between disgust propensity, a construct related to obsessive-compulsive symptomatology, and symptoms of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). Study 1 found a significant and unique (i.e., above and beyond co-occurring depression and anxiety) relationship between higher disgust propensity and more severe BDD symptoms, as measured by a standardized self-report and via an in-vivo task aimed at e
