Modeling single-vehicle run-off-road crash severity in rural areas: Accounting for unobserved heterogeneity and age difference.

This study investigates factors that significantly contribute to the severity of driver injuries resulting from single-vehicle run-off-road (SV ROR) crashes. A mixed logit model approach is employed to explore the potential unobserved heterogeneous effects associated with each age group: young (ages 16-24), middle-aged (ages 25-65), and older drivers (ages over 65). Likelihood ratio tests indicated that the development of separate injury severity models for each age group is statistically superior to estimating a single model using all data. Based on the crash data collected from 2009 to 2013

A novel approach for the EEG-driven assessment of divided attention through mutual information theory: A case study at the wheel.

Monitoring how attention is distributed across concurrent task demands is fundamental in daily life contexts such as mobility, education and industrial control. However, existing neurophysiological measures, typically based on univariate EEG markers, are sensitive to generic cognitive load, visual complexity, or motor activity, and therefore lack specificity for attentional splitting. Here, we introduce the Attentional Split Index (ASI), a novel EEG-based metric that employ Mutual Information (MI) theory, designed to quantify the coordinated modulation of multiple neurometrics that emerges whe

An immersive simulation system for provoking and analyzing cataplexy.

Cataplexy, a sudden loss of voluntary muscle control, is one of the hallmark symptoms of narcolepsy, a sleep disorder characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness. Cataplexy is usually triggered by strong, spontaneous emotions, such as laughter, surprise, fear or anger, and is more common in times of stress. The Sleep Disorders Unit and the Biomedical Imaging Resource at Mayo Clinic are developing interactive display technology for reliably inducing cataplexy during clinical monitoring. The use of immersive displays may help bypass patient defenses, and game-like "unreality" allows introducti

Mixed depressive features predict maniform switch during treatment of depression in bipolar I disorder.

BACKGROUND: Case observations imply that depressed patients with mixed features are of high risk for maniform switch during acute treatment. METHODS: The medical records of 158 bipolar I depressives were examined with respect to mixed depressive features at admission, naturalistic medications, and maniform switch during inpatient treatment. RESULTS: Besides pharmacological variables, the number of mixed depressive symptoms (flight of ideas, racing thoughts, logorrhea, aggression, excessive social contact, increased drive, irritability, and distractibility) at admission was associated with a

Bayesian networks for identifying causal effects of factors on crash injury severity at signalized intersections.

Signalized intersections are the areas where traffic crashes with severe injuries frequently happen. Although existing studies have explored the factors affecting crash injury severity at signalized intersections, intricate causal relationships between factors often fail to be captured. Thus, usage of Bayesian network reveals factors contributing to injury severity and the causal relationships between them, with the use of crash data extracted from the Crash Report Sampling System in 2021. The K2 algorithm and Expectation-Maximization algorithms are adopted for structure learning and parameter

Distracted on duty: A theory-based exploration of influences leading to mobile phone distracted riding among food delivery workers.

Using mobile phones while riding is a form of distracted riding that significantly elevates crash risk. Regrettably, the factors contributing to mobile phone use while riding (MPUWR) among food delivery riders remain under-researched. Addressing this literature gap, the current study employs the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model and various socio-economic factors to examine the determinants of MPUWR. The research incorporates data from 558 delivery workers in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The study utilizes two analytical methods to empirically test the hypotheses, considering non-line

Help or hurt? How attention modulates tics under different conditions.

Tourette syndrome is a neuropsychiatric developmental disorder, characterized by tics that are often preceded by an increasingly uncomfortable urge to move. Tic frequency can increase when patients pay attention to their tics, if tics are not suppressed. This study investigates how attentions modulates urge intensity, tic frequency and arousal during free ticcing and tic suppression. Tic frequency (video recording), urge intensity (rating scale) and pupil width (pupillometry as a measure of arousal) were assessed in 23 patients with Tourette syndrome (mean age 33.48 ± 12.37; 14 male) during fi

A Mouse Model of Mechanotransduction-driven, Human-like Hypertrophic Scarring.

Hypertrophic scarring (HTS) is an abnormal process of wound healing that results in excessive scar tissue formation. Over the past decade, we have demonstrated that mechanotransduction-the conversion of mechanical stimuli into cellular responses-drives excessive fibrotic scar healing. A mouse model to assess human-like hypertrophic scarring would be an essential tool for examining various therapeutics and their ability to reduce scarring and improve healing. Specifically, our laboratory has developed a murine wound model that increases mechanical strain to promote human-like HTS. This protocol

Naturalistic driving study on the impact of an aftermarket blind spot monitoring system on the driver's behaviour of heavy goods vehicles and buses on reducing conflicts with pedestrians and cyclists.

The risk being severely or fatally injured in crashes with heavy goods vehicle and buses is much higher compared to other vehicles. Especially vulnerable road users such as pedestrian and cyclists are at high risk. In the European Union 4600 pedestrian and more than 2000 cyclists were killed in 2019. 18% of the fatalities were counted in crashes with heavy goods vehicles or buses. Blind spot situations and driver inattention or distraction are causing and contributing crash factors. Driver assistance systems are intended to support drivers and might have a positive effect on the crash avoidanc

An attention-demanding hunting paradigm engages the superior colliculus-zona incerta circuit mediating analgesia in male mice.

Attention distraction mitigates pain, yet its neural basis remains elusive. We established cricket hunting as an attention-demanding paradigm that alleviates acute and chronic pain in male mice. Activity tagging revealed that cricket hunting activated a subset of glutamatergic neurons in the superior colliculus (SC). Selective stimulation of these hunting-activated neurons alleviated chronic hyperalgesia, primarily mediated by their projections to the zona incerta (ZI). Notably, repeated engagement, either through the hunting paradigm or by repeatedly activating hunting-activated SC-ZI project

For Whom (and When) the Time Bell Tolls: Chronotypes and the Synchrony Effect.

Circadian rhythms are powerful timekeepers that drive physiological and intellectual functioning throughout the day. These rhythms vary across individuals, with morning chronotypes rising and peaking early in the day and evening chronotypes showing a later rise in arousal, with peaks in the afternoon or evening. Chronotype also varies with age from childhood to adolescence to old age. As a result of these differences, the time of day at which people are best at attending, learning, solving analytical problems, making complex decisions, and even behaving ethically varies. Across studies of atte

Tissue engineering in cleft palate and other congenital malformations.

Contributions from multidisciplinary investigations have focused attention on the potential of tissue engineering to yield novel therapeutics. Congenital malformations, including cleft palate, craniosynostosis, and craniofacial skeletal hypoplasias represent excellent targets for the implementation of tissue engineering applications secondary to the technically challenging nature and inherent inadequacies of current reconstructive interventions. Apropos to the search for answers to these clinical conundrums, studies have focused on elucidating the molecular signals driving the biologic activit

[The Ilizarov method for lengthening and correction of the ulna in radial club hand].

The revolutionary method of treatment of fractures and their complications according to Ilizarov' can also be applied in congenital deformities. Ilizarov uses "compactotomy" and distraction of 1 mm a day, in order to cause a "driving osteogenesis" and the stimulus to regenerate the bone and soft tissues near it and connected to it. In this way it is possible to obtain progressive lengthening of a limb or bone fragment. Bone stumps are fixed with crossed Kirschner wires, and such as we can obtain at the same time a lengthening of nerves, vessels, tendons, muscles; and that, in one of his patien

Making new drugs the hard way.

A new drug can have its origin in either pharma, biotech or academia. In general, discovery scientists working in pharma and biotech are advantaged over their academic counterparts and the relative advantages and disadvantages associated are discussed in depth. Against all odds, an increasing number of important drugs have had their origins in academia. This article reports three case studies from the Liotta Research Group (LRG), which explores the special circumstances that allowed these drug development campaigns to be successful. The first involves the antiretroviral agent, emtricitabine. I

Mechanical polarity as a driver of bone regeneration: a multiscale framework linking tension, mechanotransduction and cortical apposition.

Mechanical loading is a fundamental regulator of bone remodeling, yet most conceptual models still focus on the magnitude of strain rather than its polarity. Here we propose a unified mechanobiological framework in which tensile-strain-dominant microenvironments act as primary drivers of cortical bone apposition, whereas compression-dominant fields predispose tissues to resorption and structural thinning. We synthesize evidence from long-bone bending, distraction osteogenesis, craniofacial suture biology, osteocyte mechanotransduction, and the periodontal ligament-alveolar complex to show that

Outpatient limb lengthening using magnetic intramedullary nails: A single Institution's experience.

INTRODUCTION: The advantages of outpatient surgery have been shown in other orthopedic subspecialities to be a means of driving down costs and reducing the average length of hospital stay. However, there is a scarcity of literature examining the utility of a specific, hospital-based facility performing such procedures for limb lengthening. Considering this, we aimed to investigate surgical factors, patient characteristics, and the incidence of outpatient postoperative complications for patients undergoing surgery and subsequent distraction osteogenesis utilizing the Precice® nail, a state-of-t

Modelling facets of mania--new directions related to the notion of endophenotypes.

The lack of appropriate animal models is a major limitation in research of bipolar disorder (BPD): at this time there are very few models for this devastating disease. Whereas limited attempts have been made to develop comprehensive models for BPD, the new notion of endophenotypes encourages us to explore the possibility of developing separate models for separate facets of the disorder. Since more models are available for depression, there is a dire need for models for mania that will be relatively easy and simple to induce and test and will therefore be practical for purposes of screening pos

The psychobiology of comfort eating: implications for neuropharmacological interventions.

Comfort eating, that is eating induced by negative affect, has been a core theme of explanations for overeating and obesity. Psychobiological explanations and processes underlying comfort eating are examined, as well as its prevalence in clinical and nonclinical populations, to consider who may be susceptible, whether certain foods are comforting, and what the implications for treatment may be. Comfort eating may occur in a substantial minority, particularly in women and the obese. Human and animal theories and models of emotional or stress-induced eating show some convergence, and may incorpo
