Unilateral chronic tuboovarian abscess secondary to ruptured colonic diverticulum presenting as a brain abscess. A case report.

BACKGROUND: Tuboovarian abscesses (TOAs) are a somewhat unusual finding in postmenopausal patients without risk factors. We present a rare case of unilateral TOA initially presenting as a brain abscess in a postmenopausal woman. CASE: A 61-year-old woman presented with a complaint of forgetfulness, nausea and vomiting, with lower abdominal pain and diarrhea. She was found to have a brain abscess, which was treated by craniotomy, with drainage of the abscess, and intravenous antibiotics. The patient was subsequently found to have a pelvic mass, which, on laparotomy, was a unilateral TOA. Patho

A large non-inverted true diverticulum resembling a submucosal tumor of the ascending colon: a report of a rare case.

A 57-year-old woman presented with a chief complaint of right lower abdominal pain. Abdominal radiography and plain abdominal computed tomography revealed a mass with extensive calcification. A colonoscopy demonstrated a 20-mm-sized mass lesion protruding into the intestinal lumen from the ileocecal valve's lower lip. The mass was covered with normal mucosa without erosions. Endoscopic ultrasonography indicated that the tumor originated from or beneath the proper muscle layer. To treat the pain, eliminate the obstruction risk, and obtain a definitive diagnosis, the patient chose surgical resec

Unexpected 18 F-PSMA-1007 Uptake in a Colonic Diverticulum : A Benign Mimicker of Metastatic Prostate Cancer.

A 68-year-old man with rising PSA (0.363 ng/mL) 6 years post-prostatectomy underwent 18 F-PSMA-1007 PET/CT. The scan revealed rib metastasis and an unexpected PSMA-avid focus in the ascending colon. Previous 68 Ga-PSMA and subsequent 18 F-FDG PET both showed no abnormal uptake in the ascending colon area. Colonoscopy confirmed an ascending colon diverticulum. This rare case demonstrates intense 18 F-PSMA-1007 uptake in a colonic diverticulum, likely attributable to PSMA expression by neovascular endothelium or inflammatory cells. Clinicians should consider colonic diverticulum in the different

Chicken-bone perforation of a sigmoid colon diverticulum into the right groin and subsequent phlegmonous inflammation of the abdominal wall.

Colonic diverticula are frequent in western countries and approximately 80% of patients who develop diverticulitis are elderly. The sigmoid and descending colon are most commonly involved. Clinical manifestations range from asymptomatic diverticula to life-threatening complications such as diverticulum perforation and subsequent peritonitis. In a small percentage of cases ingestion of foreign bodies can cause perforation of the sigmoid diverticulum. Ingestion of foreign bodies such as chicken bones, fish bones, toothpicks and dentures usually has no consequence and only 5% of such cases requir

Perforation of the descending colon diverticulum in a patient following recovery from severe COVID-19 pneumonia: a case report.

The outcome of surgery in patients who have recovered from severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is unknown. Herein, we present a case of an emergency operation for acute pan-peritonitis due to perforation of the descending colon diverticulum in a patient who recovered from severe COVID-19 pneumonia. A 59-year-old man, who had recovered from severe COVID-19 pneumonia ~6 months previously, developed acute pan-peritonitis due to perforation of a diverticulum in the descending colon. Emergency surgery was performed, and the perforation was sutured and closed. He was discharged from the hospi

[An autopsy case of penetration of a sigmoid colon diverticulum with septic shock during the treatment of lung cancer-related pain].

A 70-year-old man presented with septic shock and abdominal pain during treatment of pain caused by stage IV lung adenocarcinoma. CT revealed air collection from the retroperitoneum to the muscle around the thigh. Septic shock due to retroperitoneal penetration from the digestive tract was suspected. Despite treatment attempts, the patient died. The autopsy diagnosis was penetration of a sigmoid colon diverticulum under the serosa. When a diverticulum is located near the mesenterium and the size of penetration is small, the air collection rather than fecal matter is likely to extend retroperit

The role of heterotopic gastric mucosa with or without colonization of Helicobacter pylori upon the diverse symptomatology of Meckel's diverticulum in children.

The roles of heterotopic gastric mucosa either with or without colonization of Helicobacter pylori (HP) upon the diverse symptomatology of Meckel's diverticulum (MD) in children have been evaluated retrospectively. The medical records of 92 patients who underwent MD excision either incidentally or symptomatically between 1976 and 1997 were reviewed retrospectively. Age at admission and symptoms were recorded. The slides were stained with hematoxylin eosin and Giemsa to identify the presence of heterotopic tissue, ulceration, hemorrhage, inflammation and HP. Bleeding, obstruction and inflammato

Endoscopic submucosal dissection with the combination of a scissor-type knife and novel traction method for colonic neoplasm involving a diverticulum.

Video 1A 35-mm laterally spreading tumor partially infiltrated the interior portion of the diverticular orifice in the ascending colon. Glycerol and hyaluronate solution were injected into the submucosa to maintain adequate mucosal elevation. Mucosal incision and submucosal dissection were performed using a DualKnife and insulation-tipped knife from the anal side; however, safe submucosal dissection was challenging with these knives because of severe fibrosis and abundant blood vessels in the diverticulum. Therefore, to improve the visibility of the submucosa, a scissor-type knife and a multil

Accidentally ingested wooden toothpick, perforation of a sigmoid diverticulum and mimicking acute colonic diverticulitis: A case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Ingested wooden toothpick (WT) represents a rare cause of acute abdomen. Preoperative diagnosis of ingested WT is a challenge because of its unspecific clinical presentation, the low sensitivity rate of radiological investigations and the patient's inability to often recall the event of swallowing a WT. Surgery represents the main treatment in case of ingested WT-induced complications. CASE PRESENTATION: A 72-year-old Caucasian male presented to the Emergency Department with a two-day history of left lower quadrant (LLQ) abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and fever.

Look out before polypectomy in patients with diverticular disease--a case of a large, inverted diverticulum of the colon resembling a pedunculated polyp.

Diverticular disease of the colon may be responsible for abdominal symptoms requiring colonoscopy, which may reveal the presence of concomitant polyps. A polyp found during colonoscopy in patients with colonic diverticular disease may be removed by endoscopic polypectomy with electrosurgical snare, a procedure associated with an incidence of perforation of less than 0.05%. The risk of such a complication may be higher in the event of an inverted colonic diverticulum, which may be misinterpreted as a polypoid lesion at colonoscopy. To date, fewer than 20 cases of inverted colonic diverticula, d

Acute intestinal obstruction revealing synchronous gastrointestinal stromal tumors in a small bowel diverticulum and mucinous adenocarcinoma of the colon: a case report.

UNLABELLED: Gastrointestinalstromal tumors are rare neoplasms and represent 0,1% to 3% of all gastrointestinal cancers. They are the most frequent mesenchymal neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract with a malignant potential and unpredictable behavior. The synchronous association with other primary gastrointestinal carcinoma has been rarely reported in the literature with increasing number in the last ten years. The associated Gastrointestinalstromal tumor is usually discovered incidentally during surgery for carcinoma. The limited number of these cases cannot confirm the existence of a commo

Descending Colon Diverticulum Perforation Caused by Migration of a Pancreatic Spontaneous Dislodgement Stent for Prophylaxis of Post-endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) Pancreatitis.

Pancreatitis following endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), known as post-ERCP pancreatitis (PEP), is the most common and potentially serious complication of the procedure. Pancreatic spontaneous dislodgement stents (PSDSs) are widely used to reduce the incidence of PEP in high-risk patients. Although these stents are generally safe, migration-related complications such as intestinal perforation are extremely rare but potentially life-threatening. We present a case of descending colon perforation caused by migration of a PSDS placed for PEP prophylaxis. An 87-year-old man und

[A rare case illustrating the difficulty of diagnosing and treating elderly patient with CAPD-related peritonitis caused by the perforation of sigmoid colon diverticulum].

A 67-year-old man was admitted with abdominal pain on April 23, 2000. Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD)-related peritonitis was diagnosed. Administration of antibiotics for five days obtained no improvement. Therefore the peritoneal catheter was removed on April 28th. Although his condition became settled, C-reactive protein remained positive. Moreover, two kinds of bacilli were detected from the CAPD fluid, just before the catheter was removed. As abnormalities in the colon were possible, an enema examination was performed on May 23rd. A constriction and several diverticula of
