Despite being obligate air breathers, many species of marine mammal are capable of spending most of their lives submerged in water. How they do this has been a subject of intense interest to physiologists for over a century, yet we still do not have a detailed understanding of the physiological mechanisms underlying this behaviour. What are the proximate mechanisms that trigger the 'decisions' to submerge and return to the surface? The present study proposes a model intended to address this question, based on fundamental concepts of cardiorespiratory control. Two basic hypotheses are examined

The effects of face immersion and concurrent exercise on the diving reflex evoked by breath-hold (BH) differ, yet little is known about the combined effects of different BH conditions on aerobic fitness in elite athletes. This study aimed to assess the acute effects of various BH conditions on 18 male elite rugby players (age: 23.5 ± 1.8 years; height: 183.3 ± 3.4 cm; body mass: 84.8 ± 8.5 kg) and identify the BH condition eliciting the greatest aerobic fitness activation. Participants underwent five warm-up conditions: baseline regular breathing, dynamic dry BH (DD), static dry BH (SD), wet d

An adult female, albino South African Clawed frog (Xenopus laevis) from a research colony at the Biological Resources Facility of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University (NCSU) was presented with depression, lethargy, loss of diving reflex, and a distended abdomen. Cytologic examination of coelomic effusion fluid at the NCSU veterinary teaching hospital revealed a mixed population of inflammatory cells, including heterophils and a predominance of large mononuclear cells (macrophages) that often contained intracytoplasmic, negatively-stained, rod-shaped t

INTRODUCTION: The outcome of cases of near-drowning and initially poor prognostic signs are usually discouraging because of the severity of the consequent encephalopathy in most survivors. However, good recovery has been described, in spite of bad prognostic factors initially. It is difficult to establish the predictors of poor outcome which would enable one to decide when to establish and maintain advanced cardio-pulmonary resuscitation measures (CPR), since each case of near-drowning is different.
CLINICAL CASE: A four year old boy survived near-drowning in cold water without sequelas but w

Navy divers' hearing function was assessed as part of three saturation deep dives to 1,000 feet of sea water (fsw) to determine explanations for threshold shifts observed under hyperbaric conditions. Across the three deep dives, different aspects of the ear were evaluated, including air- and bone-conduction pure-tone thresholds, real ear probe microphone measurements, auditory evoked potentials, and central auditory processing assessments. Attempts to measure middle ear function and cochlear function (through otoacoustic emissions) were unsuccessful. Baseline measurements were obtained at 0 fs

Perinatal sulfur dioxide exposure disrupts parasympathetic regulation of cardiovascular activity. Here, we examine the relative risks of prenatal versus postnatal exposure to the air pollutant and the reversibility of the cardiovascular effects. Two groups of animals were used for this study. For prenatal exposure, pregnant Sprague-Dawley dams were exposed to 5 parts per million sulfur dioxide for 1 hour daily throughout gestation and with their pups after birth to medical-grade air through 6 days postnatal. For postnatal exposure, dams were exposed to air, and after delivery along with their

Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is associated to increased cardiac output, normal heart rate (HR), abnormal QT dispersion and lower diastolic blood pressure (DBP). The mechanisms are still unknown. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that there is cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction (CAD) in SCA. The secondary objectives were to distinguish the roles of chronic anemia and hemoglobinopathy and to evaluate the predominance of the sympathetic or parasympathetic systems in the pathogenesis of CAD. Sixteen subjects with SCA, 13 with sickle cell trait (SCT), 13 with iron deficiency anem

BACKGROUND: The Miskito Indian lobster divers of Central America employ very provocative diving profiles and experience severe neurological decompression sickness (DCS) and/or arterial gas embolism (AGE). Scientific data are scarce regarding the clinical patterns of injury, response to treatment, and functional outcomes for such cases.
METHODS: A retrospective review of 229 cases of DCS and/or AGE was conducted at 2 hyperbaric units in Central America.
RESULTS: The following deficits were recorded on presentation: any neurological deficit: 94%; motor: 79%; sensory: 60%; urinary: 48%; reflex:

BACKGROUND: Fatal drowning is one of the leading causes of unintentional injury mortality worldwide and a persistent public health concern in Greece. While several pathologic and sociodemographic contributing factors have been previously identified, these have not been extensively investigated in conjunction with the effects of psychoactive substances.
METHODS: A retrospective case-control study of drowning deaths was conducted in the Greek regions of Northern Greece and Thessaly during a 10-year period. A regression model was constructed examining differences in detected substances, autopsy

Application of cold to the face evokes potent bradycardia and a pressor response, similar to the diving reflex. However, the role of the baroreceptors in this response is unclear. Ten healthy controls and two patients with baroreflex impairment were recruited. A cold face test (CFT) was induced by the application of three cold packs (0.5 degrees C) to the face. Heart rate (ECG), blood pressure (Finapres) and skin temperature (forehead electrode) were recorded continuously. All data were analyzed using unpaired Students t-tests, and expressed as mean +/- SD. In all controls, CFT induced bradyca

The mammalian dive response (DR) is described as oxygen-conserving based on measures of bradycardia, peripheral vasoconstriction, and decreased ventilation (V̇E). Using a model of simulated diving, this study examined the effect of nonapnoeic facial submersions (NAFS) on oxygen consumption (V̇O2). 19 participants performed four 2-min NAFS with 8 min of rest between each. Two submersions were performed in 5 °C water, 2 in 25 °C water. Heart rate (HR) was collected using chest strap monitors. A tube connected to the inspired port of a non-rebreathing valve allowed participants to breathe during

In the anesthetized spontaneously breathing harbor seal Phoca vitulina stimulation of the carotid body chemoreceptors by intracarotid injections of sodium cyanide or by hypoxic hypercapnic blood causes an increase in tidal volume, respiratory frequency, and respiratory minute volume. The heart rate invariably decreased. Experimental dives caused apnea and bradycardia. When the carotid bodies are stimulated within 10 s of the commencement of a dive, the chemoreceptor-respiratory response is abolished, but the chemoreceptor-cardioinhibitory response is considerably enhanced. Electrical stimulati

BACKGROUND: A sustained bradycardia is used as a major indicator of severe perinatal asphyxia. However, lambs asphyxiated ex utero do not exhibit the same bradycardic response as lambs asphyxiated in utero. It is possible that the local in utero environment may influence the initial cardiovascular response to asphyxia. We assessed the effect of facial immersion in water on the cardiovascular response to birth asphyxia.
METHODS: Pregnant ewes (138±1 days gestation) were anaesthetised and fetuses were exteriorised and instrumented for measurement of cardiopulmonary haemodynamics. The lamb's hea

Two types of 'cold pressor' tasks are used frequently in research settings: immersing the hand or foot in ice water, and applying an icebag to the forehead. Both tasks have commonly been selected as 'alpha-adrenergic' tasks due to expected increases in blood pressure and peripheral resistance. However, the forehead cooling task has been used by others to produce increased vagal tone due to the elicitation of the 'diving reflex' and subsequent bradycardia. This differs from the prototypical increase in heart rate during hand immersion. The present study directly compared the cardiovascular adju

We are inspired by two observations and questions. 1) In most cases of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) patients experience a fatal failure to breathe which onsets a few minutes after a seizure, suggested to be of neural (not mechanical) origin. If respiration is such a critical behavior, then how could the architecture of the respiratory neural circuit ever allow an extended apnea to persist until it is fatal, especially in low-risk cases (first lifetime seizure) in which the patient's brain is not measurably impaired in any way? 2) Emerging data continue to support the theory that

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to determine the most effective technique for Valsalva Manoeuvre (VM) and Human Dive Reflex Manoeuvre (HDR) generation of vagal tone.
METHODS: We conducted a repeated-measures trial of healthy adult volunteers from a university campus, aged 18-56 years, in sinus rhythm. Participants were randomised to VM (in supine or Trendelenberg postures) and HDR (supine or sitting postures) sequentially. Participants performed three trials of each technique, in random order, with a continuous ECG recording. Single-blinded analysis of ECG data was conducted. Mean differences b

The effects of inert gas narcosis on behavior before unconsciousness are reviewed with particular attention to four issues. The first is whether the qualitative behavioral effects of all inert gases are identical. Evidence is limited but does not contradict an affirmative answer. This is consistent with the unitary hypothesis of narcosis at the physicochemical level. The second issue concerns the relative merits of four approaches to narcosis; (a) the descriptive model, (b) the hierarchical organization hypothesis, (c) the operant paradigm, and (d) the slowed processing model. It is concluded

Crocodylians evolved a unique gular valve that is capable of creating a water-tight seal between the oral and pharyngeal cavities, allowing the animal to safely submerge with an open mouth. The gular valve has traditionally been described as consisting of two separate parts: an active mobile ventral portion (consisting of the tongue and portions of the hyolingual apparatus) and a dorsal portion, which is a static fold on the hard palate (often termed the palatal velum). The results of the present study argue that the two portions of the gular valve are functionally integrated, not separate, an

Avian respiratory pacemaker activity is dependent on some form of peripheral input but it may be inhibited by both central and peripheral stimulation. At present the results of central nervous stimulation are difficult to interpret but, aside from cortical influences, diving apnea appears to be maintained, in the face of increasing chemoreceptor input, by noxious stimulation of the upper respiratory tract and depression of the output of medullary respiratory neurons by advancing hypercapnia. If this is so, an obvious problem for future research is what initiates the prompt onset of hyperpnea w
