The development of attachment in separated and divorced families. Effects of overnight visitation, parent and couple variables.

This study represents the first systematic investigation of the effects on infant attachment to mother and to father of the increasingly common practice of overnight visitation (time-sharing) with the father in separated and divorced families. There were 145 infants (ages 12 to 20 months) and their mothers (and 83 fathers) who participated in the study. Parents completed questionnaires, were interviewed about their relationship with the baby, and were observed with their infants in the Strange Situation. Infants in separated/divorced families who had regular overnight visits with father (n = 4

Culturally Embedded Inner Strengths as Predictors of Resilience in Emerging Adults Following Childhood Parental Divorce.

Parental divorce, as an adverse childhood experience, may disrupt family systems and exert enduring effects on psychological development, with impacts becoming particularly salient during emerging adulthood, a stage characterized by identity exploration and increasing autonomy. Within the Thai cultural context, inner strengths grounded in Buddhist values may serve as important resources for resilience. This study examined associations between inner strength dimensions derived from the Ten Perfections (Pāramīs) and resilience among emerging adults who experienced parental divorce in childhood.

Examining gender effects in postdivorce adjustment trajectories over the first year after divorce in Denmark.

Research into gender and postdivorce mental and physical health has been highly inconsistent. The Gender Similarities Hypothesis suggests there are more similarities than differences and the Divorce Stress Adjustment Perspective suggests that structural inequalities may contribute to adverse postdivorce outcomes. We conducted secondary analyses from an RCT study to investigate if there were gender-specific trajectories and whether gender was associated with outcomes (self-perceived stress, symptoms of anxiety, depression, and somatization, general hostility, and overall mental and physical hea

Divorce and sexual risk among U.S. women: findings from the national survey of family growth.

BACKGROUND: Most research focusing on marital status and sexual risk has compared married and single midadult women without differentiating single women by their ever married status. We elucidate differences in sexual risk among divorced and never married women. METHODS: Data from the National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) (n = 5,081) were analyzed to compare divorced and never married women in terms of recent and lifetime sex partners, condom use at last vaginal sex, and other sexual risk behaviors. RESULTS: Overall, 13.1% of the women were currently divorced or separated, 62.1% were curre

Divorce, genetic risk, and suicidal thoughts and behaviors in a sample with recurrent major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Theories of risk for suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB) implicate both interpersonal and biological factors. Divorce/separation and aggregate genetic liability are robustly associated with STB, but have seldom been evaluated in conjunction with one another. Furthermore, whether these factors are effective predictors in high-risk populations is not clear. METHODS: Analyses were conducted in a sample of Han Chinese women with severe recurrent major depressive disorder (maximum N = 4380). Logistic regressions were used to evaluate the associations between divorce/separation and po

The Eye of the Beholder: Attitudes toward divorced parents and perception of children's happiness in Peru and Spain.

Studies of divorce's effects on children have been oriented toward the parents' characteristics, ignoring their extended families. In the current study we collected data from 414 participants, both divorced parents and the children's extended families in Peru (155) and Spain (259). Participants completed a questionnaire on attitudes toward the parents, and the Short Dark Tetrad questionnaire. Multivariate tests were conducted on participants' responses, showing that negative attitudes toward parents are not very strong but that attitudes toward fathers are more negative than attitudes toward m

Family Disruption and Intergenerational Reproduction: Comparing the Influences of Married Parents, Divorced Parents, and Stepparents.

The transmission of individual characteristics and behaviors across generations has frequently been studied in the social sciences. For a growing number of children, however, the biological father was present in the household for only part of the time; and for many children, stepfathers were present. What are the implications of these changes for the process of intergenerational transmission? To answer this question, this article compares intergenerational transmission among married, divorced, and stepparents. Two forms of reproduction are studied: educational attainment and church attendance.

Does marriage explain murders in a society? In what way is divorce a public health concern?

INTRODUCTION: Like medicine, public health practitioners seek to understand causes of mortality, practices of humans and issues that can change population conditions, in order to preserve and care for life. The murder pandemic has been such in Jamaica that the World Bank sponsored a qualitative study on crime in urban areas in Jamaica in the late 1990s to provide a platform to guide policy intervention and programmes. As a result this study will fill the gap in the literature by providing the evidence to support that divorce and marriage are public health concerns from the perspective of murde

[From program to metaphor--managing the needs of children in a separation or divorce process involving their parents].

In German-speaking regions there are several independent intervention programs, derived from concepts originating in the USA, which are designed to assist children whose parents are separated or divorced. Two of these programs will be presented here. Consistent with the thematic implication that divorce entails trauma and stress, the childrens' need of advice and help is placed at the conceptual center of the intervention. This results in a behavioral-cognitive training program, which should enable children to overcome the stress of their situation. In contrast to these two programs, an unders

Hostility, aggression, and anxiety levels of divorce and nondivorce children as manifested in their responses to projective tests.

The effects of parental divorce on the levels of aggression, hostility, and anxiety in children, as measured by the Rorschach test, together with the type and direction of aggression, as measured by the Rosenzweig Picture-Frustration (P-F) Study, were studied. The Rorschach and the Rosenzweig P-F study were administered to a nonclinical sample of 108 Swedish children ranging in age from 10 to 12 years old. The subjects constituted a divorce and a nondivorce group of 27 girls and 27 boys each. Children of divorced parents (hereafter referred to as divorce children, divorce boys, or divorce girl

Association between parental divorce and mental health outcomes among Lebanese adolescents: results of a national study.

BACKGROUND: In Lebanon, divorce rates have jumped from nearly 7000 in recent years to 8580 in 2017, an increase of 22.5%, with North Lebanon recording the highest number, followed by Beirut, likely resulting in increased behavioral problems in the offspring of divorced parents. Furthermore, one out of two Lebanese adolescents whose biological parents were divorced, separated, or deceased has a psychiatric disorder. More information regarding the impact of divorce on the mental health of Lebanese adolescents is still missing. The objective of this study was to explore the association between di

Affinal parenthood after divorce: a socio-legal study of stepparent visitation rights in Peruvian blended families.

INTRODUCTION: Blended families challenge legal systems that continue to organize parental status primarily through formal categories such as filiation, adoption, parental authority, custody, and legally recognized family status. This study examines how Peruvian judicial, legal, prosecutorial, public-defense, and psychosocial professionals interpret the possibility of granting post-divorce visitation rights to stepparents in blended families. It does not propose automatic legal parenthood for stepparents but analyzes whether affinal status, when accompanied by evidence of social or functional p

The influences of parental divorce and maternal-versus-paternal alcohol abuse on offspring lifetime suicide attempt.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Research indicates that parental divorce and parental alcohol abuse independently increase likelihood of offspring lifetime suicide attempt. However, when experienced together, only parental alcohol abuse significantly increased odds of suicide attempt. It is unclear to what extent differences in the effect of maternal versus paternal alcohol use exist on adult offspring lifetime suicide attempt risk. This study examined the influences of parental divorce and maternal-paternal histories of alcohol problems on adult offspring lifetime suicide attempt. DESIGN AND METHODS:

Parental divorce and nicotine addiction in Lebanese adolescents: the mediating role of child abuse and bullying victimization.

BACKGROUND: Lebanon ranks first amongst Middle-Eastern countries in terms of cigarette and waterpipe smoking. Understanding the mediating factors for nicotine addiction in adolescents who have experienced parental divorce is vital to take effective measures that will help in lowering its prevalence in our community. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between the increasingly concerning parental divorce and nicotine addiction in Lebanese adolescents while taking into consideration the plausible mediating effect of abuse and bullying victimization. METHODS: This was

Harm Reduction and electronic gambling machines: does this pair make a happy couple or is divorce foreseen?

Recent empirical studies have evaluated if modifying electronic gambling machine (EGM) structural features could encourage safer gambling behaviors and decrease gambling-related problems. Several of these studies refer to Harm Reduction (HR), suggesting that the HR paradigm is useful to design, implement and test the efficacy of various prevention and treatment programs applied to EGM users. After reviewing the origins of HR and specifying its operational definition, this paper discusses the relevance of the HR framework for the study of measures related to EGM use and gambling in general. Separation and distress--sickness absence and health screening in newly divorced middle-aged Swedish men.

The present study aimed at a description of the sickness absence pattern during 1982-1989 in 32 men who divorced in 1984. Another purpose was to carry through a health screening of the men within six months after the marital disruption focusing on risk factors concerning cardio-vascular disease (smoking, overweight, hypertension) and high alcohol consumption (elevated GGT). The year of divorce and the successive three years (1984-1987) were characterized by high sickness rates (average 21,7 days/year, variation 19,4-26,6) compared to a reference group (average 16,6, variation 14,9-18,1). Association between age at Parkinson's disease onset and divorce: An exploratory analysis from the fox insight cohort.

BackgroundParkinson's disease (PD) typically presents after age 60; however, approximately 10% of individuals experience early-onset PD (EOPD), with symptoms beginning between ages 21 and 50. Beyond motor and non-motor symptoms, PD can impact personal relationships through stigma, social isolation, and emotional burden. This study aims to examine the influence of PD on relationship outcomes such as divorce or separation.MethodsThis exploratory study analyzed data from the Fox Insight cohort, an online longitudinal research initiative supported by The Michael J. Affiliation and control during marital disagreement, history of divorce, and asymptomatic coronary artery calcification in older couples.

OBJECTIVE: To examine behavioral observations of affiliation (ie, warmth versus hostility) and control (ie, dominance versus submissiveness) and prior divorce as predictors of coronary artery calcification (CAC) in older couples. In some but not all studies, marital disruption and low marital quality have been shown to confer risk of coronary artery disease (CAD). Inconsistencies might reflect limitations of self-reports of marital quality compared with behavioral observations. Also, aspects of marital quality related to CAD might differ for men and women. METHODS: Couples underwent computed

Cocrystals "Divorce and Marriage": When a Binary System Meets an Active Multifunctional Synthon in a Ball Mill.

A well-defined and stable "AB" binary system in the presence of "C" a crystalline synthon ground in a ball mill undergoes selective transformation in the solid state according to the equation AB+C→AC+B. When the amount of C is increased two times then the equation AB+2C→AC+BC is valid. The other variants are more complex. The pathway BC+A is allowed and leads to the AC and B products. The pathway AC+B is not preferred, and no transformation is observed. These non-obvious correlations were observed for cocrystal of barbituric acid (BA):thiobarbituric acid (TBA) recently reported by Shemchuk et

Divorced fathers' proximity and children's long-run outcomes: evidence from Norwegian registry data.

This study examines the link between divorced nonresident fathers' proximity and children's long-run outcomes, using high-quality data from Norwegian population registers. We follow (from birth to young adulthood) each of 15,992 children born into married households in Norway in the years 1975-1979 whose parents divorced during his or her childhood. We observe the proximity of the child to his or her father in each year following the divorce and link proximity to educational and economic outcomes for the child in young adulthood, controlling for a wide range of observable characteristics of th
