Drinking behaviors in social situations account for alcohol-related problems among socially anxious individuals.

Individuals with elevated social anxiety appear particularly vulnerable to experiencing alcohol-related problems. However, research has thus far failed to identify factors that seem to account for this relationship. The present study utilized a measure designed to assess alcohol-related behaviors related to social situations previously identified as anxiety-provoking among those with elevated social anxiety. The Drinking to Cope with Social Anxiety Scale (DCSAS) assessed alcohol-related behaviors in 24 social situations and was comprised of two subscales: Drinking to Cope in Social Situations

Behavioral undercontrol and subjective stimulant and sedative effects of alcohol intoxication: independent predictors of drinking habits?

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated relations between behavioral undercontrol (e.g., sensation seeking) and higher levels of alcohol use. The mechanism underlying this relation is not yet understood. In this article, we investigate the role of subjective stimulant and sedative effects of intoxication on drinking habits, and we test the possibility that these effects mediate or moderate relations between behavioral undercontrol and drinking habits. METHODS: College drinkers (n = 91) consumed 0.85 ml/kg of alcohol (approximately four drinks) and completed self-report measures of stim

Self-reported childhood sexual and physical abuse and adult HIV-risk behaviors and heavy drinking.

CONTEXT: Although studies of clinical samples have identified links between childhood abuse, especially sexual abuse, and adult health-risk behaviors, the generalizability of these findings to the population and the relative importance of different types of abuse in men and women are not known. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the risk of self-reported adult HIV-risk behaviors and heavy drinking that is associated with self-reported childhood histories of physical and/or sexual abuse for men and women in a general-population sample, after controlling for age and education. A second objective is to dete

Developing and Assessing the Performance of a Machine Learning Model for Analyzing Drinking Behaviors in Minipigs for Experimental Research.

Monitoring experimental animals is essential for ethical, scientific, and financial reasons. Conventional observation methods are limited by subjectivity and time constraints. Camera-based monitoring combined with machine learning offers a promising solution for automating the monitoring process. This study aimed to validate and assess the performance of a machine learning model for analyzing drinking behavior in minipigs. A novel, vision-based monitoring system was developed and tested to detect drinking behavior in minipigs. The system, based on low-cost Raspberry Pi units, enabled on-site v

Associations between drinking-related eating restriction behaviors and alcohol outcomes among college students.

UNLABELLED: Eating restrictions and alcohol use are prevalent problems on college campuses. Some students engage in eating restrictions prior to drinking to limit overall caloric intake or enhance intoxication. Limited research suggests drinking-related eating restrictions are associated with unique health risks relative to high-risk drinking alone. OBJECTIVE: We examined the association between drinking-related eating restrictions and typical past 3-month alcohol consumption (quantity, frequency, binge-drinking, peak drinks) and problems, and assessed whether psychological factors (i.e., sel

The role of parental maladaptive emotion socialization in the risk process for negative urgency and drinking behavior in adolescence.

INTRODUCTION: Negative urgency (the tendency to act rashly when experiencing negative emotions) is a robust risk factor for a number of problem behaviors, including early adolescent drinking. Little is known about the factors that precede the development of negative urgency, and hence the full etiology of this component of risk. The current study aimed to investigate the possibility that facets of childhood maladaptive emotion socialization (the tendency for children's expressions of emotions to be met with punishment, minimized, or invoke a reaction of distress from their parents/caretakers)

Behavioral effects of the combined use of alcohol and energy drinks on alcohol hangover in an experimental mice model.

In last few years it has been a significant increase in the consumption of alcohol combined with energy drink. The aim of this work was to study the effect of this mixture in motor and affective behaviors during an alcohol hangover episode. Male Swiss mice received one of the following treatments: saline + sucrose; saline + energy drink; ethanol + sucrose; ethanol + energy drink. Ethanol dose was 3.8 g/kg BW (i.p.) and energy drink dose was 18 ml/kg BW (gavage) at ZT1 (8 am) (ZT: Zeitgeber time; ZT0: 7 am; lights on). The behavioral tests used were tight rope test to determine motor coordinati

Inadequate child supervision: The role of alcohol outlet density, parent drinking behaviors, and social support.

Supervisory neglect, or the failure of a caregiver to appropriately supervise a child, is one of the predominant types of neglectful behaviors, with alcohol use being considered a key antecedent to inadequate supervision of children. The current study builds on previous work by examining the role of parental drinking and alcohol outlet densities while controlling for caregiver and child characteristics. Data were obtained from 3,023 participants via a telephone survey from 50 cities throughout California. The telephone survey included items on neglectful parenting practices, drinking behaviors

The subjective physiological, psychological, and behavioral risk-taking consequences of alcohol and energy drink co-ingestion.

BACKGROUND: The increasingly popular practice among adolescents and young adults of consuming alcohol mixed with energy drinks (AmED) has raised concern regarding potential increases in maladaptive drinking practices, negative psychological and physiological intoxication side effects, and risky behavioral outcomes. Comparison of user types has revealed that AmED users report engaging in more risk-taking behavior relative to alcohol users. However, the comparative likelihood of risk-taking according to session type (i.e., AmED vs. alcohol session) remains relatively unknown. Thus, this study wa

Effects of storm events on nutrient characteristics in a stratified drinking water reservoir: Behavior, transmission pathways and management strategy.

Storm events result in nutrient fluctuations and deterioration of reservoir water supply quality. Understanding of nutrient dynamics (e.g., concentration, composition, loads and transport pathways) and adoption of effective management strategies are critical for safeguarding water quality. A comprehensive monitoring was conducted for three storm events during the rainy season in 2023. Results showed nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) dynamics demonstrate a significant response to hydrological process. Rainfall resulted in the highest event mean concentrations (EMCs) of total nitrogen (TN), nitrat

Effects of Cocaine Exposure on Astrocytic Glutamate Transporters and Relapse-Like Ethanol-Drinking Behavior in Male Alcohol-Preferring Rats.

AIM: Glutamate has been considered as neurotransmitter that is critical in triggering relapse to drugs of abuse, including ethanol and cocaine. Extracellular glutamate concentrations are tightly regulated by several mechanisms, including reuptake through glutamate transporters. Glutamate transporter type 1 (GLT-1) is responsible for clearing the majority of extracellular glutamate. The astrocytic cystine/glutamate antiporter (xCT) regulates also glutamate homeostasis. In this study, we investigated the effects of cocaine exposure and ampicillin/sulbactam (AMP/SUL), a β-lactam antibiotic known

Early life stress induces hyperactivity but not increased anxiety-like behavior or ethanol drinking in outbred heterogeneous stock rats.

Early life stress is known to impact vulnerability to psychopathological disorders in adulthood, including anxiety and alcohol use disorder (AUD), but the mechanisms underlying susceptibility to these outcomes are not fully understood. In the current study, we used adolescent social isolation (ASI) to determine whether Heterogeneous Stock (HS) rats, an outbred model used for genetic fine-mapping, could be used to study the genetics contributing to ASI-induced anxiety- and AUD-like behavior. We isolated (ASI) or group-housed (adolescent group-housed; AGH) 64 male HS rats at 4 weeks of age. Afte

I. Veterans Affairs Cooperative Study of polyenylphosphatidylcholine in alcoholic liver disease: effects on drinking behavior by nurse/physician teams.

BACKGROUND: This multicenter prospective, randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled trial was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of polyenylphosphatidylcholine against the progression of liver fibrosis toward cirrhosis in alcoholics. Seven hundred eighty-nine alcoholics with an average intake of 16 drinks per day were enrolled. To control excessive drinking, patients were referred to a standard 12-step-based alcoholism treatment program, but most patients refused to attend. Accordingly, study follow-up procedures incorporated the essential features of the brief-intervention approach. An

Continuous exposure to dim illumination uncouples temporal patterns of sleep, body temperature, locomotion and drinking behavior in the rat.

Dissociable circadian rhythms of sleep and body temperature in primates are thought to be regulated by independent oscillators whereas the uncoupling of circadian rhythms has not been well described in other mammals. Therefore, we made simultaneous recordings of non-rapid-eye-movement-sleep (NREMS), rapid-eye-movement-sleep (REMS), brain temperature, intraperitoneal temperature, locomotion and drinking activity under light-dark (LD) and continuous dim illumination (dim LL) and analyzed their interrelations. The rhythmic patterns of body temperature, locomotion and drinking were modified on the

Differences and similarities in development of drinking behavior between alcoholic offspring of alcoholics and alcoholic offspring of non-alcoholics.

Self-reported initial, early, and long-term drinking behaviors, experiences, and consequences were obtained from male alcoholics completing inpatient treatment. Subjects were recruited and selected on the basis that they met DSM-III criteria for diagnosis of alcohol dependency and that their biological fathers were alcoholic (FHP; Family History Positive) or that they had no biological family history of alcoholism (FHN; Family History Negative). Results indicated that FHP subjects rated their initial taste of beer higher than FHN subjects, that FHP subjects began tasting and subsequently regul

Circadian clock genes Bmal1 and Per2 in the nucleus accumbens are negative regulators of alcohol-drinking behavior in mice.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, characterized by cycles of heightened craving and excessive, uncontrolled consumption of alcohol despite progressive decline in physical and mental health. Voluntary alcohol consumption is influenced by a variety of environmental and genetic factors, including circadian clock genes, whose effects are modulated in a sex-specific manner. The sex-specific role of clock genes in alcohol drinking was identified through selective ablation of Bmal1 and Per2 from neurons of the mouse striatum; however, the contribution

Association of stress-sensitive mid-insula activity with alcohol drinking and negative affect-like behavior during abstinence in mice.

Stress is central to many neuropsychiatric conditions, including alcohol use disorder (AUD). Stress influences alcohol initiation, escalation, progression to AUD, and relapse. Identifying stress-activated neurocircuits and individual variability in these responses is critical for developing new AUD treatment targets. This study investigates the relationship between adult stress response and AUD hyperkatifeia-a prolonged negative emotional state in protracted abstinence. In C57BL/6J mice, repeated restraint stress did not alter ethanol consumption but heightened aversive behavior during abstine
