Comprehensive analysis of ABA-aldehyde oxidase genes associated with drought and salt stress tolerance in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.).

INTRODUCTION: ABA-aldehyde oxidase (AAO) acts as the final rate-limiting enzyme in ABA biosynthesis, and plays a critical role in plant growth and abiotic stress response. However, comprehensive analysis of AAO genes has not been reported in wheat. METHODS: In this study, a total of 30 TaAAO genes were identified, and their physicochemical properties, evolutionary relationships, gene structures, cis-acting elements, expression patterns, upstream transcription factors, interacting proteins and drought-resistant superior haplotypes were systematically analyzed. RESULTS: Phylogenetic analysis s

Exogenous NO enhances drought tolerance in alfalfa via the lignin synthesis pathway.

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is a globally important forage legume and the most widely cultivated sown pasture species in China. Drought, as one of the most common abiotic stresses, limits alfalfa growth and development. Nitric oxide (NO), a key signaling molecule, plays an essential role in plant growth, development, and responses to various abiotic stresses. In this study, exogenous NO was applied to alfalfa seedlings under drought stress, followed by physiological and transcriptomic analyses. The results showed that sodium nitroprusside (SNP)-treated alfalfa seedlings grew better than untre

Long-Term Effect of Thinning on Radial Growth and Intrinsic Water Use Efficiency of a Pinus koraiensis Plantation on MountGari.

This study investigated the effects of thinning intensity on tree radial growth and physiological responses to drought in an approximately 43-year-old Pinus koraiensis plantation. To analyze tree-ring width, a total of sixty wood cores (5 mm) were collected from three thinning treatments applied in 2007: control (Con), light thinning (LT), and heavy thinning (HT). Drought vulnerability indices were examined across three distinct drought periods (2000-2001, 2007, and 2014-2016), and intrinsic water use efficiency (WUEi) was estimated from stable carbon isotope analysis (Con vs. HT). Thinning in

Melatonin Alleviates Drought Stress in Sweet Sorghum Seedlings via Protection of Photosynthetic Apparatus and Carbon-Nitrogen Metabolism.

Sweet sorghum, a high-quality forage and energy crop, is significantly affected by drought, the primary abiotic stress impacting its growth. Melatonin (MT) has emerged as a crucial signaling molecule in plant responses to abiotic stress. This study investigates the role of melatonin in enhancing drought tolerance in sweet sorghum, specifically using the 'Dali Shi' variety under polyethylene glycol (PEG)-induced drought conditions. Our findings demonstrate that exogenous melatonin application significantly increased proline content (by 27.76% and 5.95% under mild and moderate drought, respectiv

PhCBP60b positively regulates drought tolerance in Petunia by transcriptionally activating PhSWEET11 and PhUGT74E2.

BACKGROUND: The calmodulin-binding protein 60-like protein family plays important roles in plant immunity and stress responses, but its functions in ornamental plants remain poorly understood. In this study, we characterized PhCBP60b from Petunia × hybrida 'Mitchell Diploid' and investigated its role in drought tolerance. RESULTS: PhCBP60b encoded a nuclear-localized protein containing a conserved calmodulin-binding domain and was phylogenetically closely related to Arabidopsis AtCBP60b. PhCBP60b was predominantly expressed in roots. Overexpression of PhCBP60b in Arabidopsis and petunia enhan

Physiological Mechanisms of the Endophytic Fungus Phomopsis liquidambaris B3 in Enhancing Drought Tolerance in Rice.

With the popularization of upland rice cultivation and the intensification of global warming, drought tolerance in rice has become a critical agronomic challenge. Plant endophytes can establish symbiotic relationships with host plants and enhance plant stress tolerance. Previous studies have demonstrated that Phomopsis liquidambaris B3 (P. liquidambaris B3) can form a stable symbiosis with rice and improve plant disease resistance. However, whether this strain can enhance rice drought tolerance remains unclear. In this study, a 7-day water-withholding treatment was imposed on rice at the seedl

Temporal phenotypic responses of early vegetative maize to heat, drought, and combined stresses.

Understanding how maize responds to heat, drought, and the combination of stresses is essential for developing resilient cultivars for future climates. We characterized temporal phenotypic responses of 47 genetically diverse Zea mays inbred lines grown under control, drought, heat, and combined drought-heat stresses for 13 days in a high-throughput phenotyping platform. Plant area was modeled over time using Bayesian hierarchical growth analysis. Treatment explained the largest proportion of phenotypic variance, while genotype × treatment interaction accounted for up to 35% of color variation.

Sex-specific hydraulic and anatomical strategies underpin differential drought and shade tolerance in Populus cathayana.

Global climate change is intensifying the frequency of drought events and altering forest light environments, yet the interactive effects of drought and shade on dioecious tree species remain poorly understood. In this study, we selected female and male Populus cathayana cuttings as research objects to explore their growth, photosynthesis, anatomical and hydraulic characteristics responses to drought, shade and their interactive stress. The results revealed that the growth and photosynthetic capacity of both sexes were reduced under drought and shade stress, and the total biomass and net photo

Physiological and proteomic analysis reveal high recovery capacity of quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) after progressive drought stress.

Quinoa, a resilient crop adapted to marginal environments, offers a promising alternative under water-limited conditions. To gain new insights into its drought tolerance, we combined physiological analyses with quantitative proteomics under progressive drought (1-2 weeks) and subsequent recovery (2 weeks). Drought stress induced significant reductions in biomass (56%) and relative water content (46%) after two weeks, with leaf osmotic potential decreasing by up to 48%. However, plants exhibited strong recovery in these parameters upon rehydration. Proteomic analysis identified 114 differential

Trade-offs between biomass and bioactive compounds in Silybum marianum under elevated CO2 and water deficit across genotypes.

Climate change, characterized by rising atmospheric CO2 and increasing drought stress, significantly affects plant growth and metabolism. Milk thistle (Silybum marianum), valued for its silymarin-rich seeds, is an important medicinal plant sensitive to these environmental changes. This study evaluated four genotypes-Hungary, Isfahan, Omidiyeh, and Charam-with three soil moisture levels (well-watered, moderate, and severe water deficit stress) in a factorial design with four replications under two distinct CO2 environments (ambient, 404 ± 24 μmol mol-1 CO2, and elevated, 702 ± 51 μmol mol-1 CO2

Increased pine root exudation of phenolic acids and amino acids under drought.

Belowground carbon (C) allocation by trees, particularly through root exudation, is a key pathway influencing long-term C storage in forest soils. Future climate change scenarios, such as drought and elevated CO2 (eCO2) strongly affect trees' physiology and influence belowground C allocation. However, how the rate and chemical composition of root exudation change, especially under the combined effect of drought and eCO2, remains poorly understood. We conducted an experiment to examine the single and combined effects of drought and eCO2 on the belowground C allocation of Pinus brutia Ten saplin

Impact of drought stress memory and variations in type and degree on root characteristic, yield stability and drought tolerance in Orchardgrass.

BACKGROUND: As climate change intensifies, perennial plants face more frequent drought periods throughout their lifespan. Drought stress memory in certain plants significantly enhances their adaptability to challenging environmental circumstances. However, in open-pollinated crops, this process is influenced by population plasticity due to the type and degree of genetic diversity, and inbreeding depression. To understand how pre-exposure to moderate drought enhances the plants' response to subsequent severe stresses, four synthetic poly-crossed populations were constructed using parents with c

Integrative transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses of the drought response mechanisms of stem spines in desert plants from the Ebinur Lake.

Stem spines are key adaptive organs in desert plants, playing a critical role in resisting drought stress and maintaining plant survival. However, the molecular mechanisms governing their responses to drought remain insufficiently characterized. We investigated the stem spines of two representative halophytic shrubs from the Ebinur Lake Wetland desert region, Alhagi sparsifolia and Nitraria tangutorum, under a natural drought gradient: mild drought (Mi), 15.51% ± 0.61%; moderate drought (Mo), 8.87% ± 0.77%; severe drought (S), 3.34% ± 0.26%), and integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analy

Co-occurring congeners coordinate drought and shade tolerance traits along gradients of canopy openness.

Physiological traits related to water status and photosynthesis biophysically link plant performance to environmental conditions like light and water availability. By approaching the concept of species' niches from a trait-based perspective, physiological traits can be used to characterize how trait syndromes diverge to limit direct resource competition and promote resource partitioning in sympatric species. Such traits could also inform broader studies of changing community composition in an era of drastic shifts in climate or disturbance regimes. However, the extent of inter/intraspecies tra

Salicylic acid regulates polyamine biosynthesis during drought responses in oat.

Salicylic acid (SA) is involved in several plant processes including responses to abiotic stresses. Although SA is thought to interact with other regulatory molecules in a complex way, currently, little information is available regarding its molecular mechanisms of action in response to abiotic stresses. In a previous work, we observed that drought-resistant oat plants significantly increased their SA levels as compared with a susceptible cultivar. Furthermore, exogenous SA treatment alleviated drought symptoms. Here, we investigated the interaction between SA and polyamine biosynthesis during

Changes in Foliar Water Uptake Caused by Water Stress in Cattleya Lindl. (Orchidaceae).

In response to water restrictions imposed by the epiphytic environment, orchids have developed strategies to increase water-use efficiency, such as the expression of Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM) and the foliar water uptake (FWU). In a climate change scenario, FWU may emerge as a strategy to reduce water stress during drought. In this study, we propose that, in Cattleya forbesii Lindl. and Cattleya guttata Lindl., drought alters the leaf water balance, increases CAM expression, and may consequently increase the FWU rate. To test this hypothesis, drought stress was induced by restricting w

Pines grow faster and are more drought resilient in the Southern Hemisphere.

Drought-induced conifer mortality is a global concern1, yet conifers native to the Northern Hemisphere that have been planted at massive scales in the Southern Hemisphere do not appear to show the same magnitude of growth decline or mortality as in their native ranges. Using a standardized dendrochronological survey at 192 sites across four continents, we find that Northern Hemisphere conifers grow up to four times faster in the Southern Hemisphere and are also more resistant and resilient to drought than conspecifics in native ranges, suggesting that non-native populations respond fundamental
