Prospective assessment of taste impairment and nausea during radiotherapy for head and neck cancer.

Dysgeusia and nausea are common side effects observed in head and neck cancer patients treated with either exclusive radiotherapy or combined modality treatment. The aim of the present study was to prospectively evaluate dysgeusia, during treatment and follow-up, using the chemotherapy-induced taste alteration scale (CiTAS), a metrics based on 18-items exploring three dimensions (quantitative and qualitative changes in taste perception, and diet-related issues) identified through a four-factor analysis: decline in basic taste, discomfort, phantogeusia-parageusia, and general taste alterations.

Metallic taste as a side effect of topical fluorouracil use.

Topical fluorouracil is widely used for the treatment of precancerous and cancerous lesions of the skin. The most common side effect of this medication is localized irritant dermatitis. The authors report a case of dysgeusia with metallic taste as a side effect of this medication. While not previously seen with topical use, this is not an uncommon side effect seen with systemic administration of 5-fluorouracil. The etiology of dysgeusia from chemotherapeutic agents and systemic absorption of fluorouracil is discussed.

Does COVID-19 cause permanent damage to olfactory and gustatory function?

The objective of this study was to investigate the status of COVID-19 patients with sudden anosmia and dysgeusia using an olfactory dysfunction questionnaire highlighting recovery times. This prospective study included 75 patients who completed a patient-reported outcome questionnaire. Among these, 46 patients completed an olfactory evaluation based on the duration of anosmia and dysgeusia. The olfactory evaluation revealed that 24% (N = 18) of patients had mild hyposmia, 13% (N = 10) had moderate hyposmia, 30% (N = 23) had severe hyposmia, 32% (N = 24) had anosmia, and 100% had dysgeusia (N =

[Mechanisms and Management of COVID-19-Associated Taste Disorders].

The taste buds in the human tongue contain specialized cells that generate taste signals when they are stimulated. These signals are then transmitted to the central nervous system, allowing the human body to distinguish nutritious substances from toxic or harmful ones. This process is critical to the survival of humans and other mammals. A number of studies have shown that dysgeusia, or taste disorder, is a common complication of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, which can severely affect patients' nutritional

A 47-Year-Old Japanese Woman with Symptoms of Increased Salty and Reduced Sweet Taste Perception Preceding a Diagnosis of Thymoma-Associated Myasthenia Gravis.

BACKGROUND Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune neuromuscular disorder, which is often accompanied by various complications. Partial dysgeusia is an uncommon nonmotor symptom of MG, and dysgeusia preceding typical MG symptoms is rare. Although ageusia and hypogeusia have been reported in patients with MG, increased perception of taste has not been reported. CASE REPORT A 47-year-old Japanese woman presented with a reduced perception of sweet taste and an increased perception of salty taste. Meanwhile, she was diagnosed with thymoma-associated generalized MG and underwent extended thymectomy

Oral dryness related symptoms in radiation-treated head and neck cancer patients: a pilot study of oral microbiome composition and function.

INTRODUCTION: Xerostomia (dry mouth) and dysgeusia (taste changes) are subjective oral symptoms affecting radiation-treated head and neck cancer (HNC) patients. Our objective was to determine longitudinal and cross-sectional changes in oral microbiome profiles and predicted molecular pathways. METHODS: Saliva and tongue swab samples from HNC patients (N = 25) were collected at baseline (BL) and 18-months (18mos) post-radiation therapy (RT). 16S-rRNA gene V1-V3 next generation sequencing was performed. Subjective xerostomia and dysgeusia scores were determined using EORTC QLQ-H&N ranking scale.

Taste Disturbance Due to Cochlear Implant Stimulation.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize stimulation of taste fibers in the facial nerve following cochlear implantation. PATIENT: A 34-year old presented with reversible dysgeusia following activation of a cochlear implant. INTERVENTION: Reprogramming targeted to specific offending electrodes reduced symptom intensity. Computed tomography demonstrated dehiscence of the bone separating the labyrinthine segment of the facial nerve and the basal turn of the cochlea in proximity to the electrode array. RESULTS: Dysgeusia was attributed to stimulation of taste fibers in the facial nerve by electrodes 13 to 1

Taste disorders after tonsillectomy: case report and literature review.

The authors describe a case of dysgeusia that occurred during the recovery period after a tonsillectomy. The cause was thought to be a lesion to the lingual branch of the glossopharyngeal nerve because of the location of the symptoms at the posterior region of the buccal cavity and because of the raised electrogustometric thresholds in the posterior region of one half of the tongue. Clarification of this type of case was made by a review of the literature from 1966 to June 2004, carried out with the aid of Medline. From a medicolegal standpoint, it is important to inform the patient of the ris

[Evaluation of the senses of taste and smell in petroleum chemistry workers based on 3-year observations].

The authors have presented results of examinations of the smell and taste senses in 547 petrochemistry, workers, and 100 cotton industry workers composing a control group. In both groups, those aged 26 -- 35, with long duration of employment, predominated. In the primary group i.e. petroleum chemistry workers, dysgeusia has been found in 319 (58.3%) subjects with no reaction at all in 102 (18.6%) persons. Hyposmia has been found in 238 (43.5%) and anosmia in 50 (9.2%) subjects. In the control group, dysgeusia has been found in 69%, whereas anosmia in 24% of subjects.

Post-traumatic taste disorders: a case series.

Since 1800s there are reports of post-traumatic anosmia, but few studies investigated post-traumatic gustatory deficit and adopted validated evaluation tests. Peripheral and/or central mechanisms may be involved in the genesis of post-traumatic gustatory dysfunction. Beyond a reduction/loss (hypogeusia/ageusia) of gustatory function following a trauma, qualitative taste changes (dysgeusia) may occur. Especially when persistent, taste deficits might be particularly relevant for patient's quality of life and activities of daily life, but knowledge on this topic is limited. Fifty-three consecutiv

A Rare Case of Bifurcated Chorda Tympani.

Preservation of the chorda tympani is important in middle ear surgery to prevent dysgeusia postoperatively. However, determining the exact course of the chorda tympani before surgery is not always possible, especially in cases with accompanying malformations. In this report, we presented an extremely rare case of bifurcation of the chorda tympani in a 15-year-old male patient. We performed tympanoplasty for a middle ear malformation with conductive hearing loss. During the operation, we noticed and carefully preserved the bifurcated chorda tympani. The patient did not develop dysgeusia postope

Analysis of drug-induced adverse reactions affecting appetite and taste using the Japanese Adverse Drug Event Report Database.

OBJECTIVE: Pharmacotherapy is a potential risk factor for undernutrition; however, the association between individual drugs and nutrition-related adverse reactions remains unknown. We aimed to explore drugs affecting appetite and taste using the Japanese Adverse Drug Event Report (JADER) database. METHODS: JADER reports (April 2004-January 2025) were analyzed for drug safety signals across seven Preferred Terms (PTs): "Appetite disorder," "Decreased appetite," "Abnormal loss of weight," "Ageusia," "Dysgeusia," "Hypogeusia," and "Taste disorder." Signal detected drugs were classified by therap

Effectiveness of intraoral stents in reducing oral adverse events during radiotherapy for maxillary or nasal cavity malignant tumors.

PURPOSE: Many patients experience oral adverse events during head and neck cancer radiotherapy (RT). The methods of management of such events are under debate. One such technique is the intraoral stent (IOS) technique, which removes normal tissue from the irradiation field. This retrospective study examined the factors associated with the occurrence of oral mucositis (OM) and dysgeusia and the efficacy of IOSs in preventing them. METHODS: Twenty-nine patients who underwent RT in the maxilla or nasal cavity between 2016 and 2022 were included. They were investigated for background characterist

Respiratory Distress in SARS-CoV-2 without Lung Damage: Phrenic Paralysis Should Be Considered in COVID-19 Infection.

UNLABELLED: We describe an overweight COVID-19 patient with respiratory distress preceded by anosmia/dysgeusia with no lung injury shown on CT, angio-CT or ventilation/perfusion scans. Orthopnoea and paradoxical abdominal respiration were identified. Phrenic paralysis, demonstrated by examination of patient breathing, and on x-ray while standing breathing in and out, explained the respiratory distress. This is a rare and previously undescribed neurological complication of COVID-19 infection caused by vagus nerve injury. LEARNING POINTS: Phrenic paralysis must be kept in mind as a rare neurolo

Sweet taste loss in myasthenia gravis: more than a coincidence?

Sweet dysgeusia, a rare taste disorder, may be encountered in severe anti-acetylcholine receptor antibody (AChRAb)-myasthenia gravis (MG). A 42 year-old man reported progressive loss of sweet taste evolving for almost 10 weeks, revealing an AChRAb-positive MG with thymoma. Improvement of sweet perception paralleled reduction of the MG composite score during the 15 months follow up period, with immunosuppressive and surgical treatments. We suggest that sweet dysgeusia is a non-motor manifestation of MG that may result from a thymoma-dependent autoimmune mechanism targeting gustducin-positive G-
