Gastrointestinal symptoms and bowel patterns across the menstrual cycle in dysmenorrhea.

Gastrointestinal (GI) functional indicators and symptoms across the menstrual cycle were examined in three groups of women: dysmenorrheic (n = 15), non-pill-taking nondysmenorrheic (n = 10), and nondysmenorrheic taking birth control pills (BCPs) (n = 9). Group assignment was based on the reported presence or absence of moderate to severe menstrual cramps in a GI Health Diary which subjects kept for two menstrual cycles. Stool consistencies and frequencies and GI symptoms were also recorded in this diary. Menstrual cycle phase significantly, p = .03, influenced stool consistencies for the sampl

The gap between prevalence of primary dysmenorrhea and available treatment strategies.

ABSTRACT: Primary dysmenorrhea is the cramping pain in the lower abdomen usually before or during menstruation. Although dysmenorrhea affects young girls and women of all ages, the etiology and treatment options are sparse and have limitations. Through a review of the existing literature, we document the history and elaborate on the mechanisms, diagnosis, and treatments related to dysmenorrhea. Based on cross-sectional studies, primary dysmenorrhea is a common issue affecting many women of reproductive age, often leading to absenteeism, and interfering with daily activities. Treatments such as

The effect of dysmenorrhea severity and interference on reactions to experimentally-induced pain.

INTRODUCTION: Dysmenorrhea is associated with increased risk of chronic pain and hyperalgesia. Menstruating individuals with dysmenorrhea are more likely to have elevated pain reactivity when experiencing experimental pain, than those without. However, no study has examined intragroup differences in reactions to experimentally induced pain for individuals with dysmenorrhea. The main aim of this study was to examine the relative roles of dysmenorrhea severity and interference in the experience of experimentally-induced pain. METHODS: Participants were 120 menstruating individuals involved in a

Cold Exposures in Relation to Dysmenorrhea among Asian and White Women.

Dysmenorrhea is highly prevalent, ranging from 16% to 91% among women, and it can lead to multiple reproductive disorders. However, risk factors associated with dysmenorrhea remain unexamined. Cold exposures can significantly disturb blood circulation and prostaglandin production in the uterus, leading to dysmenorrhea. This study investigated the relationship between cold exposures and dysmenorrhea, as well as potential disparities between Asians and Whites and the potential cultural influences on these associations. This was a cross-sectional survey among 197 Asian and 222 non-Asian women rec

Prevalence and Risk Factors of Primary Dysmenorrhea in Students: A Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Primary dysmenorrhea (PD), as the most common complaint among students, is also one of the public problems worldwide. Prevalence and risk factors of PD were variant between studies; as the main population, no meta-analysis for PD has hitherto been conducted in students. METHODS: We searched the published literature in PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, National Knowledge Infrastructure, WANFANG, and VIP database. After screening and assessing the quality of studies, data from eligible studies were extracted for meta-analysis via the R language. RESULTS: A total

Expression of Cannabinoid Receptors in Myometrium and its Correlation With Dysmenorrhea in Adenomyosis.

The myometrium, especially the junctional zone (JZ), is now well documented to have a role in the pathogenesis of adenomyosis. Cannabinoid receptors have been shown to participate in the establishment of endometriosis and its pain perception. However, its relation to adenomyosis has not been identified yet. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of cannabinoid receptor type I (CB1) and type II (CB2) in myometrium of uteri with and without adenomyosis and determine the correlation between their levels and clinical parameters of adenomyosis. We collected tissue samples of JZ and

Experimental and procedural pain responses in primary dysmenorrhea: a systematic review.

Primary dysmenorrhea (PD) has been the focus of a number of experimental pain studies. Although a number of reviews exist, few have critically evaluated the existing body of research on PD and experimental and procedural pain. Data from 19 published research articles that include women with PD and responses to an experimental or procedural pain stimulus (or stimuli) suggest that women with PD may have elevated pain reactivity, as compared to women without PD. This pattern appears to be true across different phases of the menstrual cycle. However, there is an abundance of conflicting findings,

The association of dysmenorrhea with noncyclic pelvic pain accounting for psychological factors.

OBJECTIVE: The factors that underlie pelvic pain are poorly understood. Specifically, the relative influence of dysmenorrhea and psychological factors in the etiology of noncyclic pelvic pain conditions, such as interstitial cystitis and irritable bowel syndrome, is unknown. To further characterize pelvic pain, we compared the frequency of menstrual, somatosensory, and psychological risk factors between women with and without severe noncyclic pelvic pain symptoms. STUDY DESIGN: A total of 1012 reproductive-aged women completed a 112-item questionnaire with domains including mood, fatigue, phy

Dysmenorrhea and psychological wellbeing among females with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Although rarely examined together, ADHD, emotional regulation (ER), and dysmenorrhea may be associated, which could create additive burdens on psychological well-being (PWB). Clinicians working with ADHD populations may need to take these challenges into consideration to maximize treatment outcomes. This study investigated the relationships among ADHD, dysmenorrhea, ER, and PWB within a sample of 266 adult females with a self-reported ADHD diagnosis. ADHD symptom severity was positively correlated with dysmenorrhea severity, but ER skills were not a significant moderator of this relationship.

Robert's Uterus-Rare Cause of Intractable Dysmenorrhea and Chronic Pelvic Pain.

Robert's uterus is a rare type of congenital uterine anomaly where septum divides the uterine cavity asymmetrically resulting in the formation of a noncommunicating hemiuterus. Patients may present with recurrent pain, dysmenorrhea, recurrent abortions, and infertility. They are often misdiagnosed as unicornuate uterus with a noncommunicating horn. Thirty-year nulliparous female with history of severe dysmenorrhea since her menarche for which she had been operated thrice with no relief, presented with severe abdominal pain. Magnetic resonance imaging findings were suggestive of possibility of

Symptoms-Based Phenotypes Among Women With Dysmenorrhea: A Latent Class Analysis.

Dysmenorrhea is highly prevalent and may increase women's risk for developing other chronic pain conditions. Although it is highly variable, symptom-based dysmenorrhea phenotypes have not been identified. The aims of the study were to identify symptom-based dysmenorrhea phenotypes and examine their relationships with demographic and clinical characteristics. In a cross-sectional study, 762 women with dysmenorrhea rated severity of 14 dysmenorrhea-related symptoms. Using latent class analysis, we identified three distinctive phenotypes. Women in the "mild localized pain" phenotype ( n = 202, 26

Levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine device used for dysmenorrhea: five-year literature review.

Intrauterine devices (IUDs) provide highly effective, long-term, safe, reversible contraception, and are the most widely used reversible contraceptive method worldwide. The levonorgestrel-releasing IUD (LNG-IUD), originally designed for long-term contraceptives, is now recognized to provide non-contraceptive health benefits. These include severe dysmenorrhea and/or heavy menstrual bleeding associated with uterine myoma, endometriosis, and adenomyosis. This report aims to review the last five-year literature on the efficacy and safety of the LNG-IUD in women with dysmenorrhea. Dysmenorrhea has
