[Eagle syndrom: a rare cause of lateral neck pain].

Cervical pain is usually related to spinal disease. Occasionally, it may originate from the throat or other soft tissues of the neck. We report the case of a 47-year-old woman who presented at the outpatient clinic for lateral neck pain on the left side, increased by rotation of the head and chewing. General and ear-nose-throat aminations were normal. Pain was elicited by extension of the cervical spine per cervical spine. Laboratory tests were normal. Plain radiographs showed no vertebral or disc space abnormality but elongated styloid processes. The CT scan showed ossifications of the styloh

Taphonomic aspects of crowned hawk-eagle predation on monkeys.

This study provides a taphonomic analysis of prey accumulations of crowned hawk-eagles (Stephanoaetus coronatus) from Ngogo, Kibale National Park, Uganda, collected over 37 months from below nests of two eagle pairs. Crowned hawk-eagles are powerful predators capable of killing animals much larger than themselves, and are significant predators of cercopithecoid monkeys in forest habitats throughout sub-Saharan Africa. At Ngogo, 81% of the individuals in the kill sample are monkeys. Redtail monkeys (Cercopithecus ascanius) are particularly well represented in the sample, making up 66% of monkey

Complications of peritoneal dialysis in children with Eagle-Barrett syndrome.

Eagle Barrett syndrome (EBS) is characterized by the triad of abdominal muscle deficiency, urinary tract abnormalities, and cryptorchidism. Approximately 25% of patients with EBS progress to end-stage renal disease. It is speculated that the abdominal muscular defects in EBS pose technical problems in achieving successful peritoneal dialysis (PD). In this retrospective analysis, we reviewed the medical records of EBS and non-EBS PD patients cared for at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital from 1985 to 2002; 5 EBS and 9 non-EBS patients were analyzed. PD duration, total complication rates, a

The orthopaedic manifestations of prune-belly (Eagle-Barrett) syndrome.

Forty children were managed for prune-belly syndrome between 1979 and 1989, and twenty-five of them had musculoskeletal abnormalities. The musculoskeletal abnormalities were primary in twenty-two children, secondary to renal osteodystrophy in one, and both primary and secondary to renal osteodystrophy in two. Thirteen children had marked abnormality of the hip, and congenital dislocation was typically resistant to conventional treatment. Scoliosis was seen in seven patients. Pectus excavatum (a chest-wall deformity) was seen in eleven patients, including five of the six who had an idiopathic-l

White-Tailed Eagles' (Haliaeetus albicilla) Exposure to Anticoagulant Rodenticides and Causes of Poisoning in Poland (2018-2020).

The white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) is strictly protected in Poland due to its threat of extinction. This study's main goal was to assess their exposure to indirect poisoning by anticoagulant rodenticides (AR). This study presents the investigation results of 40 white-tailed eagles' suspected poisoning cases in the years 2018-2020 in Poland. In all tested liver samples, using a liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry method, at least one of the AR (bromadiolone, brodifacoum, difenacoum, flocoumafen) was detected and confirmed. The other tested AR compounds (chlorophacinone, coumachlo

Abundance of Harpy and Crested Eagles from a reservoir-impact area in the Low- and Mid-Xingu River.

In the Brazilian Amazon, two monospecific genera, the Harpy Eagle and Crested Eagle have low densities and are classified by IUCN as Near Threatened due to habitat loss, deforestation, habitat degradation and hunting. In this study, we evaluate occurrence of these large raptors using the environmental surveys database from Belo Monte Hydroelectric Power Plant. Integrating the dataset from two methods, we plotted a distribution map along the Xingu River, including records over a 276-km stretch of river. Terrestrial surveys (RAPELD method) were more efficient for detecting large raptors than sta

Magnetic resonance imaging is superior to radiography in evaluating spinal cord trauma in three bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus).

Three bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) found along highways and unable to fly were presented for evaluation. All eagles exhibited sternal recumbency, as well as flaccid hind limb and tail paralysis. Vertebral column and spinal cord trauma were suspected as the cause. One bird died, whereas the remaining 2 birds were stabilized for diagnostic imaging studies. All 3 birds were evaluated by radiography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for diagnosis and for prognosis in the live birds. Radiographic findings in all 3 birds were inconclusive, whereas MRI results showed extensive damage of

Resource use and associated energy expenditure of African crowned eagles (Stephanoaetus coronatus) in an urban-forest mosaic landscape.

Rapid urbanization is a major driver of global change, making it increasingly important to understand how wildlife persists in highly transformed landscapes. Using insights from movement (Global Positioning System, GPS) and activity (accelerometry, ACC) data, we aimed to understand the behavioral and physiological mechanisms associated with an apex predator's successful exploitation of heavily transformed landscapes. The African crowned eagle (Stephanoaetus coronatus), a subtropical forest eagle, breeds at unusually high densities in Durban, eThekwini Municipality, South Africa. Here, crowned

Lead and eagles: demographic and pathological characteristics of poisoning, and exposure levels associated with other causes of mortality.

We conducted a retrospective analysis to evaluate demographic and pathologic characteristics in 484 bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) and 68 golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) diagnosed with lead poisoning at the U.S. Geological Survey National Wildlife Health Center. As part of our analysis, we compared characteristics of lead poisoned eagles with those that died of other causes. Odds of lead poisoning were greater for bald eagles versus golden eagles, females versus males, adults versus juveniles, and eagles from the Mississippi and Central flyways versus the Atlantic and Pacific flyways

Epizootic vacuolar myelinopathy of the central nervous system of bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) and American coots (Fulica americana).

Unprecedented mortality occurred in bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) at DeGray Lake, Arkansas, during the winters of 1994-1995 and 1996-1997. The first eagles were found dead during November, soon after arrival from fall migration, and deaths continued into January during both episodes. In total, 29 eagles died at or near DeGray Lake in the winter of 1994-1995 and 26 died in the winter of 1996-1997; no eagle mortality was noted during the same months of the intervening winter or in the earlier history of the lake. During the mortality events, sick eagles were observed overflying perches

Eagle's Syndrome Presenting With Peripheral Facial Palsy-A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Eagle's syndrome is a condition caused by an elongated styloid process and is characterized by various symptoms such as cervicofacial pain, foreign body sensation, headache, odynophagia, and otalgia. However, the occurrence of a unilateral peripheral facial palsy as a symptom of Eagle's syndrome has been described only rarely. METHODS: We report the case of a 60-year-old male patient who presented with a sudden and unprovoked onset of retroauricular pain on the left side, accompanied by peripheral left facial palsy. Imaging revealed an extensively elongated styloid process on the

Transoral Styloidectomy for Eagle Syndrome: A Case Report With Intraoperative Footage.

Eagle syndrome is a rare condition resulting from an elongated styloid process or calcified stylohyoid ligament compressing adjacent anatomical structures. The condition typically manifests with unilateral neck pain, facial discomfort, odynophagia, and, in some cases, neurological disturbances. Among the available treatment options, transoral styloidectomy is one of the two primary surgical approaches. Despite its technical simplicity and clinical advantages, this approach is infrequently utilized due to the rarity of this syndrome and limited surgical training materials. This technical report

Malignant Middle Cerebral Artery Infarct Caused by Eagle's Syndrome.

Eagle's syndrome is characterised by elongation of the styloid process. The elongated styloid process can cause symptoms like dysphagia, facial or neck pain, syncope, visual changes, etc. In severe cases, it may cause a rupture or dissection of the carotid artery, which can lead to intracranial thrombo-embolism and ischemic stroke. We report a case of a 57-year-old male presenting with dysarthria and mild left-sided body weakness. An initial non-contrast computed tomography (CT) scan showed a possible right internal carotid artery thrombus. He developed worsening left-sided weakness and gaze p

Robotic treatment of ureteropelvic junction obstruction in Eagle-Barrett Syndrome.

Eagle-Barrett Syndrome (EBS) is a rare congenital condition characterized by the triad of absent or defective abdominal wall muscles, urinary tract abnormalities, and bilateral cryptorchidism. Ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) is seldom reported in these patients, despite it being a common cause of childhood obstructive uropathy. We present the case of a patient with EBS who was subsequently identified as having symptomatic UPJO that was successfully treated with robotic pyeloplasty.
