BACKGROUND: The external ear represents a site with high ultraviolet exposure and thin skin overlying cartilage. The aim of this study was to determine if ear melanomas have different characteristics than cutaneous melanomas in other anatomic sites.
METHODS: The evaluation of patients treated at a tertiary care center.

This report is based on an analysis of 100 patients with the unilateral form of HFM, in which the patients presented no other known craniofacial or extracranial malformations. The analysis was based on a three level gradation of severity of the external ear and the mandible, resulting in nine different combinations. This analysis of selected components of the syndrome clearly illustrates the phenotypic heterogeneity within the sample. It also follows that treatment should be guided by the number and severity of the affected components.

Minoxidil is a potent peripheral vasodilator used to treat patients with severe hypertension that is unresponsive to other medications. Hypertrichosis of the forehead, face, neck, shoulders, upper part of the arms, and legs is a frequent side effect that occurs in the majority of patients that use this drug. This phenomenon appears to be due to increased blood flow to hair follicles, with resultant excessive hair growth. We describe a patient with severe hypertrichosis of the external ear canal resulting in chronic otitis externa and hearing loss.

Two families are presented in which affected members had deafness, preauricular sinuses, branchial fistulae and malformation of the external ear. In Family I, a renal abnormality was an associated feature. In Family 2, two individuals had an abnormality of the incudostapedial joint. In both families inheritance was autosomal dominant with variable expressivity. The occurrence of external-ear malformations, branchial fistulae, and preauricular sinuses should indicate the need to search for a hearing loss not only in the patient but amongst relatives.
