DEX in near Earth orbit in light of Venus Orbiter Dust Experiment.

Study of IDP has been of interest to researchers for few decades, primarily after missions like Galileo, Ulysses, Cassini, Stardust and observations of comet, Hale-Bopp. The data from experiment like GORID have extended our knowledge about dust surrounding Earth. Similar attempts were made for understanding IDP at planets like Mars and Venus, however, in-situ measurements of IDP are awaited. We have proposed VODEX as well as MODEX for measuring dust around Venus and Mars, respectively and the Dust EXperiment (DEX), a replica of the same, was recently flown in near-Earth orbit at ~ 350 km using

Overestimated natural biological nitrogen fixation translates to an exaggerated CO2 fertilization effect in Earth system models.

CO2 fertilization of the terrestrial biosphere is limited by nitrogen. Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) is the dominant natural nitrogen source to the terrestrial biosphere and can alleviate nitrogen limitation but is poorly constrained in Earth system models (ESMs). Here, we compare terrestrial BNF from an ensemble of ESMs of the 6th Coupled Model Intercomparison Project to a new global synthesis of observations across natural and agricultural biomes. We find that compared to observations, ESMs underestimate agricultural BNF but overestimate natural BNF in the present day by over 50%. Natur

Beyond planetary-scale feedback self-regulation: Gaia as an autopoietic system.

The Gaia hypothesis states that the Earth is an instance of life. However, appraisals of it tend to focus on the claim that life is a feedback self-regulator that controls Earth's chemistry and climate dynamics, yet, self-regulation by feedbacks is not a definitive characteristic of living systems. Here, we consider the characterization of biological systems as autopoietic systems (causally organized to self-produce through metabolic efficient closure) and then ask whether the Gaia hypothesis is a tractable question from this standpoint. A proof-of-concept based on Chemical Organization Theory

[The influence of hypogeomagnetic field on bioelectric activity of the brain in epilepsy].

An influence of geomagnetic field (GMF) on bioelectric activity of the brain was studied in 20 epileptic patients by the use of "hat", which attenuated GMF. A short-term attenuated GMF increased a EEG synchronisation by alpha-rhythm, generalized slow-waves discharges. Some similarities and differences were found in attenuated GMF effects and in the results of hyperventilation trial. The main role in perception of attenuated GMF belongs to the parietal area of the right hemisphere.

Earth analogs for Martian life. Microbes in evaporites, a new model system for life on Mars.

The prospect of life on Mars today is daunting. Especially problematic for a potential life form is a lack of water, particularly in a liquid state; extremely cold temperatures; ultraviolet and ionizing radiation; and soil oxidants. Yet, "oases" where life might persist have been suggested to occur in rocks (in analogy with endolithic microorganisms described from deserts around the world), in polar ice caps (in analogy with snow and ice algae) and in possible volcanic regions (in analogy with chemoautotrophs living in deep sea hydrothermal vents); all are critically examined. Microorganisms a

Limits on High-Frequency Gravitational Waves in Planetary Magnetospheres.

High-frequency gravitational waves (HFGWs) carry a wealth of information on the early Universe with a tiny comoving horizon and astronomical objects of small scale but with dense energy. We demonstrate that the nearby planets, such as Earth and Jupiter, can be utilized as a laboratory for detecting the HFGWs. These GWs are then expected to convert to signal photons in the planetary magnetosphere, across the frequency band of astronomical observation. As a proof of concept, we present the first limits from the existing low-Earth-orbit satellite for specific frequency bands and project the sensi

Carbonate formation and fluctuating habitability on Mars.

The cause of Mars's loss of surface habitability is unclear, with isotopic data suggesting a 'missing sink' of carbonate1. Past climates with surface and shallow-subsurface liquid water are recorded by Mars's sedimentary rocks, including strata in the approximately 4-km-thick record at Gale Crater2. Those waters were intermittent, spatially patchy and discontinuous, and continued remarkably late in Mars's history3-attributes that can be understood if, as on Earth, sedimentary-rock formation sequestered carbon dioxide as abundant carbonate (recently confirmed in situ at Gale4). Here we show tha

Fungal diversity differences in the indoor dust microbiome from built environments on earth and in space.

Human occupied built environments are no longer confined to Earth. In fact, there have been humans living and working in low-Earth orbit on the International Space Station (ISS) since November 2000. With NASA's Artemis missions and the age of commercial space stations set to begin, more human-occupied spacecraft than ever will be in Earth's orbit and beyond. On Earth and in the ISS, microbes, especially fungi, can be found in dust and grow when unexpected, elevated moisture conditions occur. However, we do not yet know how indoor microbiomes in Earth-based homes and in the ISS differ due to th

Embeddedness of Earth's gravity in visual perception.

Falling objects are commonplace in daily life, requiring precise perceptual judgments for interception and avoidance. We argue that human judgments of projectile motion arise from the interplay between sensory information and predictions constrained by Newtonian mechanics. Our study investigates how individuals perceive falling objects under various gravitational conditions, aiming to understand the role of internalized gravity in visual perception. Through meticulously controlling the available information, we demonstrated that these phenomena cannot be explained solely by simple heuristics n

Hydrogen cyanide production due to mid-size impacts in a redox-neutral N2-rich atmosphere.

Cyanide compounds are amongst the most important molecules of the origin of life. Here, we demonstrate the importance of mid-size (0.1-1 km in diameter) hence frequent meteoritic impacts to the cyanide inventory on the early Earth. Subsequent aerodynamic ablation and chemical reactions with the ambient atmosphere after oblique impacts were investigated by both impact and laser experiments. A polycarbonate projectile and graphite were used as laboratory analogs of meteoritic organic matter. Spectroscopic observations of impact-generated ablation vapors show that laser irradiation to graphite wi

The historic biogeography of India: isolation or contact?

Geophysical maps depicting continental movement have consistently shown India, as it moved northward, to be located far out in the Tethys Sea. India split off from the African east coast about 148 m.y.a. From that time onward, according to almost all geophysical accounts, India was isolated from all of other continents until the early Miocene when it made contact with Eurasia. But the biological data, both fossil and Recent, indicate that this concept cannot be correct. If India had really existed as an isolated, oceanic continent for about 100 m.y., it should have developed a peculiar biota w

Bolide impacts and the oxidation state of carbon in the Earth's early atmosphere.

A one-dimensional photochemical model was used to examine the effect of bolide impacts on the oxidation state of Earth's primitive atmosphere. The impact rate should have been high prior to 3.8 Ga before present, based on evidence derived from the Moon. Impacts of comets or carbonaceous asteroids should have enhanced the atmospheric CO/CO2 ratio by bringing in CO ice and/or organic carbon that can be oxidized to CO in the impact plume. Ordinary chondritic impactors would contain elemental iron that could have reacted with ambient CO2 to give CO. Nitric oxide (NO) should also have been produced

Biopreservation Beyond the Biosphere: Exploring the Ethical, Legal & Social Implications of Suspended Animation in Space.

In the evolving field of advanced biopreservation technologies, the development of suspended animation (SA) is inspired by real-world challenges. In the context of space exploration, SA is seen as a solution to enable humans to undertake missions far beyond low Earth orbit, including routine travel to other planets in our solar system and beyond. While work on the socio-ethical and legal implications (ELSI) of space exploration continues to evolve, NASA has committed to make ethics a priority issue, making this a fruitful field for further examination.

A distant brown dwarf coplanar to a warm Jupiter and a hot super-Earth.

In transiting planetary systems, in which planetary sizes are accurately determined from transit observations, the presence of transit-timing variations1 (TTVs), especially when combined with radial velocity (RV) data, provides powerful constraints on masses and orbital eccentricities. Together, these measurements offer crucial insights into system architecture, formation mechanisms and dynamical evolution. We present long-term RV and transit/TTV monitoring of the relatively young star (age approximately 1 Gyr) TOI-201, revealing an exceptional multi-planet system composed of a hot super-Earth

Raman spectroscopy as a tool for assessing plant growth in space and on lunar regolith simulants.

Colonization of the Moon and other planets is an aspiration of NASA and may yield important benefits for our civilization. The feasibility of such endeavors depends on both innovative engineering concepts and the successful adaptation of life forms that exist on Earth to inhospitable environments. In this study, we investigate the potential of Raman spectroscopy (RS) in a non-invasive and non-destructive assessment of changes in the biochemistry of plants exposed to zero gravity on the International Space Station and during growth on lunar regolith simulants on Earth. We report that RS can sen

Optical efficiencies of lightning in planetary atmospheres.

Spacecraft observations show that the presence of lightning activity is not confined to the terrestrial atmosphere, but is also found in the atmospheres of Venus, Jupiter and Saturn. Lightning activity may also occur in Titan's thick atmosphere. Calculations show that lightning produces a significant fraction of the nitric oxide that reacts with the ozone and chlorine compounds in the terrestrial stratosphere. In the atmosphere of the primordial Earth, lightning could have been the major source of many of the molecules required for the formation of life. To determine the effects of lightning a

Nitrogen Oxides in Early Earth's Atmosphere as Electron Acceptors for Life's Emergence.

We quantify the amount of nitrogen oxides (NOx) produced through lightning and photochemical processes in the Hadean atmosphere to be available in the Hadean ocean for the emergence of life. Atmospherically generated nitrate (NO3-) and nitrite (NO2-) are the most attractive high-potential electron acceptors for pulling and enabling crucial redox reactions of autotrophic metabolic pathways at submarine alkaline hydrothermal vents. The Hadean atmosphere, dominated by CO2 and N2, will produce nitric oxide (NO) when shocked by lightning. Photochemical reactions involving NO and H2O vapor will then

Cosmic ray (neutron) activity and air pollution nanoparticles - cardiovascular disease risk factors - separate or together?

BACKGROUND: In the last decade, a number of studies were published showing links between cardiovascular events such as stroke (CVA), acute myocardial infarction (AMI), sudden cardiac death (SCD) and cosmic ray activity (CRA) marker neutron activity on the Earth's surface (imp/min). A number of concomitant studies described air pollution fine particles as a similar risk factor. It is not clear which way each of the mentioned factors acts on the way of affecting the human body. The aim of this study is to present separate data of these two factors as risk factors and to discuss the possibility o

Lipase-catalyzed biodiesel production from waste activated bleaching earth as raw material in a pilot plant.

The production of fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) from waste activated bleaching earth (ABE) discarded by the crude oil refining industry using lipase from Candida cylindracea was investigated in a 50-L pilot plant. Diesel oil or kerosene was used as an organic solvent for the transesterification of triglycerides embedded in the waste ABE. When 1% (w/w) lipase was added to waste ABE, the FAME content reached 97% (w/w) after reaction for 12 h at 25 degrees C with an agitation rate of 30 rpm. The FAME production rate was strongly dependent upon the amount of enzyme added. Mixtures of FAME and d

Silicon: The key element in early stages of biocalcification.

Biocalcification is a widespread process of forming hard tissues like bone and teeth in vertebrates. It is also a topic connecting life sciences and earth sciences: calcified skeletons and shells deposited as sediments represent the earth's fossil record and are of paramount interest for biogeochemists trying to get an insight into the past of our planet. This study reports on the role of silicon in the early biocalcification steps, where silicon and calcium were detected on the surface of cyanobacteria (initial stage of lacustrine calcite precipitation) and in crustacean cuticles. By using in
