Are you how you eat? Aspects of self-awareness in eating disorders.

Eating disorders (ED) are severe psychiatric disorders characterized by dysfunctional behaviors related to eating or weight control, with profound impacts on health, quality of life, and the financial burden of affected individuals and society at large. Given that these disorders involve disturbances in self-perception, it is crucial to comprehend the role of self-awareness in their prevalence and maintenance. This literature review presents different self-awareness processes, discussing their functioning across different levels of complexity. By deconstructing this concept, we can gain a bett

The buffet challenge: a behavioral assessment of eating behavior in adolescents with an eating disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Eating disorders are characterized by disturbances in nutritional intake and abnormal mealtime behaviors. Laboratory eating paradigms offer a unique opportunity to accurately measure dietary intake and eating behaviors, however, these studies have predominantly occurred in adults. This paper describes the development and preliminary psychometric examination of the Buffet Challenge, a laboratory-based meal task for youths with an eating disorder. METHOD: We recruited and assessed 56 participants as part of a randomized controlled trial of Family-Based Treatment for adolescents with

Naltrexone Reduces Binge Eating and Purging in Adolescents in an Eating Disorder Program.

Objective: Little evidence exists for pharmacologic treatment of binge eating and purging in adolescents with eating disorders. Given the role of the opioid reward system in compulsive binge eating and purging, naltrexone, an opioid antagonist, may be effective in reducing these behaviors. Previous studies have demonstrated that naltrexone reduces binge eating and purging in adults, yet evidence for its use in adolescents is lacking. This case series describes naltrexone utilization, response, and safety in adolescents with eating disorders. Methods: A retrospective chart review of adolescent

Validation of the exercise and eating disorder questionnaire in males with and without eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The need to consider gender when studying exercise in eating disorder (ED) has been underscored. The study aimed to test the psychometric properties and factor structure of the exercise and eating disorder (EED) questionnaire for males with and without ED, to highlight gender differences, and to explore issues relevant for a male version of the EED questionnaire. METHOD: This cross sectional study included 258 male participants: 55 ED patients (inpatients and outpatients) and 203 student controls. The patient group consisted of 54.5% (n = 30) with AN, 18.2% (n = 10) with BN, 27.2%

Eating disorders and attachment: the effects of hidden family processes on eating disorders.

AIM: This study examined pattern of attachment in cohort of women with an eating disorder to determine what types of self-protective strategies they used, and further whether there was a specific relationship between strategy and diagnosis. METHOD: The participants were 62 young women with an eating disorder (19 with anorexia nervosa, 26 with bulimia nervosa and 17 with bulimic anorexia). Attachment was assessed using the Adult attachment interview (AAI), classified using Crittenden's Dynamic-Maturational Method. RESULTS: The results indicated that all women with an eating disorder were anxi

Reliability of the Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire in patients with binge eating disorder.

This study examined the test-retest reliability of the Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire (EDE-Q) in patients with binge eating disorder (BED). Short-term (mean days = 4.8; SD = 3.6) test-retest reliability of the EDE was examined in a sample of 86 patients with BED. Test-retest reliability was excellent for objective bulimic episodes (correlation = .84), but poor to unacceptable for subjective bulimic episodes and objective overeating episodes (correlations = .51 and .39, respectively). Test-retest reliabilities were good for the EDE-Q scales (correlations = .66 to .77), albeit somewha

Hedonics of binge eating in women with bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Potential differences in the hedonics of binge eating between female subjects with bulimia nervosa (BN) and female subjects with binge eating disorder (BED) were examined. METHOD: Women seeking treatment for BN (N = 29) and BED (N = 49) completed the Eating Hedonics Questionnaire. RESULTS: Subjects in both groups reported similar precipitants and levels of distress associated with binge eating. Of interest, BED subjects were more likely to report that they enjoyed the food, the taste of the food, the smell and the texture of the food while binge eating. In addition, the BED group

Eating disorder attitudes and disordered eating behaviors as measured by the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q) among cisgender lesbian women.

The Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q) is a measure of eating disorder attitudes and disordered eating behaviors. Prior descriptive studies of the EDE-Q for women either did not assess or omitted reporting sexual orientation. This study's objective was to assess eating disorder attitudes and disordered eating behaviors as measured by the EDE-Q among cisgender lesbian women. We present mean scores and standard deviations for the EDE-Q among 563 self-identified cisgender lesbian women ages 18-77 who were recruited from The PRIDE Study in 2018. Among cisgender lesbian women, 3.4 %

[Recognize disturbed eating behavior].

Early recognition and treatment of disturbed eating behavior is crucial. It can develop into a full-blown eating disorder through various mechanisms. Often this process can be interrupted at an early stage. Training of primary care professionals is essential for this because they often do not relate nonspecific physical or psychological symptoms to disturbed eating behavior. This often results in years of delay in diagnosis and initiation of counseling. This article provides diagnostic tools and practical guidelines for collaboration in primary care, based on a general practitioner as director

Eating disorders: clinical update.

Variation exists in our attitude and behaviour towards food and exercise, resulting in different degrees of health and ill health. Cultural and economic factors contribute to this, alongside personal choices, leading to a spectrum from normative eating, through disordered eating to the extremes of eating disorders (EDs). Understanding the intricate interplay between biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors to eating, exercise and body image is paramount to understand the current state regarding EDs and to deliver/develop multifaceted and individualised treatments. Significant servi

Eating Disorders in Men.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders are seen mainly as a problem affecting women, not just by the public at large, but also in specialized circles. Although it is true that more women than men suffer from all types of eating disorder, pertinent reviews have clearly shown that they do indeed occur in men, and that the available evidence on the matter is limited. The stigmatization of men with eating disorders makes it harder for these men, and for the relevant professionals, to recognize the symptoms and to seek or provide help. METHODS: This review is based on publications retrieved by a selective s

Feeding and eating disorders.

Eating disorders (EDs) are a group of prevalent psychiatric illnesses with an onset in early to late adolescence-a time of significant neural development, physical and psychologic growth, and self-exploration. The etiology and neurobiology of EDs are not well understood, but EDs are recognized as brain-based illnesses with serious acute and long-term consequences if undertreated or ignored. Two EDs, anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN), have historically been the primary EDs of focus. The DSM-5 updated diagnostic criteria for these disorders added two more: binge-eating disorder (BED

Neuroimaging and eating disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Eating disorders are severe psychiatric disorders with a suspected complex biopsychosocial cause. The purpose of this review is to synthesize the recent literature on brain imaging in eating disorders. RECENT FINDINGS: Food restriction as well as binge eating and purging behaviors are associated with lower regional brain volumes or cortical thickness, but those changes largely return to normal with normalization of weight and eating behavior. Computational modeling has started to identify patterns of structural and functional imaging data that classify eating disorder subty

Eating disorder animal model.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this review is to describe animal models that simulate the features of eating disorders. The literature pertaining to animal models that are of relevance for clinical eating disorders and the possible underpinning mechanisms was reviewed using PubMed, Ovid database and Google Scholar. RECENT FINDINGS: New refinements of the circuits regulated by neurotransmitters and neuropeptides which instigate eating behaviours and the various feedback pathways which monitor acute and chronic nutrient status continue to be discovered. Moreover, work with the animal models that

Eating Disorders in Males.

Eating disorders are serious psychiatric disorders, associated with significant psychiatric and medical consequences. Although traditionally considered a female disorder, more recent evidence has determined that EDs among males are not uncommon and are equally severe in symptom presentation. Among youth and adolescent males, certain factors increase the risk for ED, including muscularity-focused body image concerns and sexual orientation. Future study of these and other factors that may increase the risk for or maintain EDs among adolescent males is critical to improving screening, assessment,
