Onchocerciasis in Ecuador. III. Clinical manifestations of the disease in the province of Esmeraldas.

Considerable variation in the frequency of the clinical manifestations of onchocerciasis was seen in the individual endemic foci of the disease in province of Esmeraldas, Ecuador. In hypoendemic areas, 84.6% of all microfilaria-positive inhabitants were found to be free of any clinical manifestations of the disease, whereas in the hyperendemic area clinical manifestations were present in 57.9% of those infected. Ocular keratitis, macular papular rash of the skin and subcutaneous onchocercal nodules of varying frequency were the major clinical variants. Long-standing onchodermatitis and hypertr

Onchocerciasis in Ecuador. II. Epidemiology of the endemic foci in the province of Esmeraldas.

The epidemiology of infection was studied in all endemic foci of onchocerciasis in the province of Esmeraldas in Ecuador. The incidence of infection and the density of microfilariae in the skin, both greater in males than females, increased with age, reaching highest levels at 40-45 years in males and at 60 years and older in females. In the hyperendemic area males and females had the same rate of infection, but the microfilarial density in males exceeded that in females. In the hypoendemic areas males had a higher infection rate than females, but females registered a higher density of microfi

Seroprevalence and Risk Factors Related to Bovine Brucellosis in Continental Ecuador.

Bovine brucellosis is a worldwide zoonotic contagious disease. According to World Animal Health Information System reports Ecuador has presented an increasing number of bovine brucellosis outbreaks in the continental territory over the past years (756 in 2018 versus 964 in 2021), generating economic losses for producers and causing a risk to public health. A cross-sectional study was conducted to investigate the seroprevalence of bovine brucellosis and associated risk or protective factors between May and June 2018. This stratified random study was implemented in 290 cattle herds located in th

Case Report: Evidence of Tungiasis in the Amazon Rain Forest of Ecuador.

Tungiasis occurs in tropical and subtropical areas in Central and South America and sub-Saharan Africa and is a Neglected Tropical Disease. We diagnosed three cases of tungiasis in a Dutch family visiting indigenous communities in the Amazon basin of Ecuador. Eight days after returning, they presented papular, pruritic, and painful lesions on the feet, with a whitish halo and a blackish central point with abundant whitish eggs upon extraction. For the first time, we demonstrate that Tunga spp. transmission is present in remote indigenous communities in the Amazon rainforest of Ecuador. It will

Insights from the clinical phenotype of subjects with Laron syndrome in Ecuador.

The Ecuadorian cohort of subjects with LS has taught us valuable lessons since the late 80's. We have learned about migration of Sephardic Jews to our country, their isolation in remote hamlets and further inbreeding. These geographical, historical and social determinants induced dissemination of a growth hormone (GH) receptor mutation which widely occurred in those almost inaccessible villages. Consequently, the world's largest Laron syndrome (LS) cohort emerged in Loja and El Oro, two of the southern provinces of Ecuador. We have been fortunate to study these patients since 1987. New clinica

Seroprevalence and risk factors of bovine leptospirosis in the province of Manabí, Ecuador.

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease with worldwide distribution. The disease affects dairy and beef cattle, causing infertility, abortion, and reduced milk yield. A cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the seroprevalence of leptospirosis in cattle and the associated risk factors in the province of Manabí, Ecuador. Serum samples from 749 animals from 55 cattle herds were analyzed using the microscopic agglutination test (MAT). Animals were considered positive when titers were ≥ 1:100. The association between the potential risk factors and the positive Leptospira result was modeled a

High Occurrence of Multiresistant Salmonella Infantis in Retail Meat in Ecuador.

Salmonella enterica is among the most important foodborne pathogens. In Ecuador, there is limited information about non-typhoidal S. enterica occurrence in raw meats, its serotype distribution, and antimicrobial resistance. In this study, we addressed this issue in 1095 retail fresh meats (chicken, pork, veal, lamb, beef, and turkey) in Quito by performing a traditional culture methodology and molecular detection. We found that S. enterica was present in 38.1% of the samples, and Salmonella Infantis was the most common serotype showing a high antibiotic resistance and a wide host range. Some h

Data scarcity and ecological complexity: the cutaneous leishmaniasis dynamics in Ecuador.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a neglected tropical disease transmitted by species of Phlebotominae sand flies. CL is responsible for more than 1000 reported cases per year in Ecuador. Vector collection studies in Ecuador suggest that there is a strong association between the ecological diversity of an ecosystem, the presence of potential alternative or reservoir hosts and the abundance of sand fly species. Data collected from a coastal community in Ecuador showed that Leishmania parasites may be circulating in diverse hosts, including mammalian and potentially avian species, and these hosts

Epidemiological analysis of the New World screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax) in Ecuador.

The New World screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax) is an obligate parasite that affects warm-blooded animals. It causes myiasis in livestock and humans, which is a problem for animal production and public health. The health and economic burden of myiasis on livestock production is largely unknown in Ecuador. We investigated the presence of the screwworm and analysed the epidemiology and spatial and temporal trends of myiasis in cattle farms of San Miguel de Los Bancos county. In total, epidemiological questionnaires were conducted in 110 farms, which were subsequently monitored for 12 months. T

A Case of Cutaneous Larva Migrans in a Child from Vinces, Ecuador.

BACKGROUND Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) is caused by nematode parasites of the hookworm family of Ancylostomatidae. Ancylostomiasis is a zoonosis found in cats and dogs, and humans are an accidental host. This report presents a case of CLM in an 8-year-old boy, which was due to the zoonotic transmission of Ancylostoma caninum from domestic dogs in an urban area of Vinces, Ecuador, and demonstrates how awareness and early diagnosis contributed to the timely treatment of CLM. CASE REPORT An 8-year-old boy from the urban area of Vinces city in the Los Ríos province of Ecuador presented with a se
